Draft Scout College Football Player News

When reporters in January probed Alabama wide receiver DeVonta Smith for hints about his then-looming decision whether to enter the NFL or stay in school, details were scarce. "[It will be about] just putting me, myself and my family in the best situation that we think is best for us," Smith said outside the Tide's Camping World Stadium locker room after a Citrus Bowl win over Michigan. Five days later, Smith revealed his choice: he was returning for his senior season. The world has turned upside down in the five months since, wiping out spring football practices and adding uncertainty to the manner in which the fall college season will be played. As doubt was cast on Smith's senior season, two of his teammates in Alabama's receiver room -- Henry Ruggs and Jerry Jeudy -- were drafted three picks apart in the first round of April's NFL draft. Their professional deals will be worth a combined $32 million.

Whether Smith made the right decision, football-wise, to remain in college won't be known for another seven months. But, assuming the upcoming season is played as scheduled, Smith will have a less-crowded stage at his position to showcase his abilities to NFL teams and potentially raise his stock higher. Former Alabama safety Robby Green, who now runs New Orleans-based Dynamic Performance Training, has been readying Smith for his final act in Tuscaloosa. "He's got unfinished business," Green told AL.com this week. "He has unfinished business he has to prove and personal goals he has to accomplish." - Birmingham News
