David Bell and the 2,946 yards he accrued in three seasons at Purdue are gone. And for the first time since 2018, the Boilermakers do not have a wide receiver on the Biletnikoff Award watch list. But coach Jeff Brohm still likes the receivers surrounding quarterback Aidan O'Connell, who returns for a fourth season in 2022. Broc Thompson, who transferred from Marshall last offseason, caught seven passes for 217 yards and two touchdowns during Purdue's 48-45 win against Tennessee in last year's Music City Bowl. Thompson had surgery this offseason, but Brohm said the receiver is close to returning. - Lincoln Journal Star

Baylor athletics is looking to expand NIL opportunities for its athletes by partnering with Opendorse to form the Baylor Bears NIL Marketplace, which will launch Aug. 3. The NIL (Name, Image and Likeness) Marketplace will offer a streamlined access point for organizations and individuals who would like to explore NIL collaborations with Baylor athletes, while remaining compliant with NCAA guidelines. "We fully support student-athletes earning from their NIL in a way that appropriately recognizes the imp ortance of inclusive opportunity, appropriate market valuations, and positively building one's brand," Baylor athletic director Mack Rhoades said in a release. Using Opendorse, all athletes can review and accept NIL deals, receive payments, disclose acti vities for compliance and auto-generate necessary tax documentation. Throughout his time at Colorado, Alex Fontenot has been through a lot. He's had three head coaches. He's been a backup and a starter - and then a backup again. He's dealt with a major injury. He's watched many teammates come and go. As he prepares for hi s final season, however, Fontenot isn't focused on anything that's happened in the past. "I just take it day by day and just try and put myself in the best position to just keep moving forward and keep bettering myself and my game," the senior running ba ck said in the spring. While there are familiar faces in the backfield, led by Fontenot, this is an intriguing position group because of the changes in the offseason. Jarek Broussard, who led the Buffs in rushing the last two years and was the Pac-12 off ensive player of the year in 2020, transferred to Michigan State. Ashaad Clayton, a four-star recruit in the 2020 class with a load of potential, transferred to Tulane.CU's coaching staff targeted FCS All-American Ramon Jefferson to replace Brouss ard. Jefferson committed to CU in January and was in the Buffs' plans throughout the spring. In May, Jefferson changed his mind and eventually landed at Kentucky. What's left is Fontenot and a lot of players with unproven potential, but that doesn't mean the Buffs can't find success in the backfield. "I know we can get it done," Fontenot said. "That's the confidence I have in our room. … The talent is still there." It starts with Fontenot, who is entering his sixth season with the Buffs. He has 14 car eer starts, 11 of those coming in 2019, when he led CU with 874 yards and five touchdowns while catching 27 passes. - Daily Camera

Graham Mertz studied history earlier this summer, Wisconsin football history. His teachers: Former UW quarterbacks Scott Tolzien, who started a total of 26 games in 2009 and 2010; and Brooks Bollinger, who started a total of 42 games from 1999 through 20 02. "The coolest part of them is that both of them wanted to start like a quarterback fraternity," Mertz said Wednesday on Day 2 of the Big Ten preseason meetings. "That is one thing I really want to do when I leave here is be connected to the guys young er than me." Mertz has 20 starts on his UW résumé, seven in the COVID-affected 2020 season and 13 last season. The Badgers are 13-7 in those 20 games and Mertz will be the first to tell you he needs to make more plays and commit fewer turnovers. According to Mertz, he was able to meet with Tolzien for nearly two hours. He chatted less formally with Bollinger throughout Braelon Allen's charity softball game in Fond du Lac. "Their biggest thing was: 'Whatever you need, whenever you need it, hit us up,'" Mertz said. "The biggest thing was that they wanted to get to know me and I wanted to get to know them. It was great." - Journal Sentinel

Chris Klieman knew how valuable Eli Huggins had been to Kansas State's defense for the past couple of years. He also knew that as a senior in 2021, Huggins had a decision to make. An NCAA ruling granted players active during the coronavirus pandemic an e xtra year of eligibility, and Klieman and his staff didn't want to push too hard, regardless of how badly they wanted him to stick around. "We didn't know if he was going to come back and we let him have a bit of time," Klieman said of Huggins, a 6-foot- 4, 297-pound defensive tackle from Cumming, Ga. "And then a bunch of us kind of went at him hard and said: 'We want you back. We need you back,' and he said, 'I want to do this one more time.' "So to be here six years, to go through all he went through, he really deserved the opportunity to." Eli Huggins says he has something to prove. As it turned out, it didn't take a lot of prodding to convince Huggins to come back. After the season, which ended with a 42-20 Texas Bowl victory over LSU, he cons ulted with teammates who had taken advantage of the COVID year in 2021 and decided it was the best path for him as well. "I wasn't ready (to leave), man," Huggins said. "I felt like I had more to prove. I knew we'd have a great opportunity this year with a ton of good guys coming back (and) it didn't feel right to leave yet. "I love Manhattan too much. It's such a good place and just the best option for me was to come back." - Topeka Capital Journal

Ryan Day expects more than improvement from Ohio State football's defense this season - and he name-dropped one of the best squads in program history to emphasize his point. Day set the goal of a Top 10 defense Wednesday at Big Ten Media Days. He doubled down on that standard later, and reiterated that it starts up front with stopping the run - the Achilles heel that ruined the Buckeyes' playoff bid last season. "A lot of it has to do with technique, a lot of it has to do with scheme, and a lot of it ha s to do with toughness," Day said. Day compared the current defense to the one that led OSU to a playoff berth in 2019.That team also installed a new defense under a new coordinator. It benefited from players who gained experience the year before as young players forced into bigger roles. Chase Young and Jeff Okudah headlined a defense that led the nation in yards allowed per play and ranked fourth in points allowed per game. Those players, though, were third-year stars on the verge of being the No. 2 and 3 picks in the NFL Draft. The 2022 Ohio State defense will rely more on second-year players who may be further removed from their ceilings. - Cleveland Plain Dealer
