Gunner Gentry is facing another long year in the training room instead of making plays for the Cowboys on the field. The redshirt junior wide receiver suffered a knee injury on a non-contact play in practice this week and is expected to be out for Wyomin g's entire 2022 season. Gentry, the younger brother of former UW star and current Buffalo Bills wide receiver Tanner Gentry, had battled back from two knee surgeries that sidelined him last season. "It's heartbreaking," head coach Craig Bohl said after F riday's practice. "I mentioned to our football team it's an injury, he'll bounce back, and we've got to move forward as a team." Gentry tore the patellar tendon in his left knee during spring practice in 2021 and again last September. He hasn't appeared in a game for the Pokes since the 2020 season when he caught the only touchdown pass thrown by UW during the pandemic-shortened campaign. - Casper Star-Tribune

The Utah football program has announced the four players that will be wearing the captain's patch this season. On Thursday night, the Utes announced that quaterback Cameron Rising, defensive tackle Devin Kaufusi, tight end Brant Kuithe and cornerback Cla rk Phillips III will be their captains this season. Each was voted as a captain by Utah's players. Rising, entering his third season, threw for 2,493 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2021. Kaufusi, entering his fifth season, recorded 13 tackles last year. Kuit he is entering his fifth season and caught 50 passes for 611 yards and six touchdowns in 2021, while Phillips III - entering his third season with the Utes - had 61 tackles and two interceptions last season. - Deseret News

Penn State's transfer portal recruiting prior to the 2021 season included multiple key additions to its roster. The Nittany Lions and head coach James Franklin added Arnold Ebiketie - who would lead the team in sacks and go in the second round of the 202 2 NFL Draft - and Derrick Tangelo along the defensive line as starters. They added Eric Wilson, who picked up plenty of snaps at guard on offense, and John Lovett, who had a role in the run game. Not to mention A.J. Lytton, who was a key contributor on s pecial teams. All five of those players came in as part of a six-man transfer class and all five are no longer with the program. The first four either entered the draft or exhausted their eligibility, while Lytton transferred out of Penn State.The sixth member of the class is the lone player still with the Nittany Lions and has become one of the most frequently mentioned names out of fall camp as a breakout player - Johnny Dixon. Dixon joined the team after transferring out of South Carolina and made minimal impact, recording 10 tackles and two passes defended. Heading into his second year with the program, a flip has switched for Dixon, starting cornerback Joey Porter Jr said. "He's a different dude from when he came in to now," Porter Jr. said . "I feel like he really changed his attitude and his approach to the game. He's just been making plays all camp. It's a high ceiling for Johnny and it's gonna be a good year for him." - Centre Times

After sitting out the 2020 season due to NCAA-imposed transfer rules, Eyabi Anoma got an opportunity at UT-Martin, where he compiled 36 tackles (9 1/2 for a loss) and six sacks in an edge-rushing role while earning all-Ohio Valley Conference newcomer hon ors. The short timeline, however, could delay his chance of getting onto the field. Michigan is in the final stretch of fall camp, with the season opener just 16 days away on Sept. 3 against Colorado State. If he does prove himself on the field, Anoma co uld help bolster an unproven edge-rushing group impacted by the departures of Aidan Hutchinson and David Ojabo. Mike Morris and Taylor Upshaw are expected to lead, with a supporting cast comprised of Braiden McGregor and Jaylen Harrell, among others, but coaches have been frank about not having a star edge guy to lean on.As a result, they say, the production may come from a list of players, one that could include Anoma. The Baltimore native starred at St. Frances Academy in high school and was on ce considered a top-five player nationally for his length, athleticism and play on the field. In 2017, Biff Poggi, his high school coach who's now on Jim Harbaugh's staff at Michigan, referred to Anoma as "the best player I've ever coached." Michigan ori ginally recruited Anoma, but lost out to Alabama. If nothing else has been made clear through the first two weeks of Kentucky football's preseason practices, fans can rest assured that new offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello loves his tight ends. "I really believe there's three or four or five in tha t room that are going to play on Sundays," he declared after the first practice. Entering camp, the depth chart already looked crowded. Returners Brenden Bates, Keaton Upshaw, Izayah Cummings and Jordan Dingle brought a combined 84 games, 14 starts, 51 c atches and eight touchdowns to the room. There did not appear to be any snaps available for a newcomer. Someone forgot to tell freshman Josh Kattus that he was destined for a redshirt season though. "I love him," Scangarello said. "I'm a big fan of Josh. He's got a long road to go, but he's got some special qualities. He's kind of become a favorite, I think, among the offense too as a young player. He's nasty, plays hard, plays to the whistle. "I think he aggravates the defensive guys at times, which I love. He's got a little something to him that's going to make him a really good football player here."With Upshaw battling a minor hamstring issue as he worked his way back from missing all of last season due to injury, Kattus was already receivin g some first-team reps in certain packages at UK's Fan Day open practice three days into preseason camp. Kattus arrived on campus with a reputation as a physical blocker, but he made an early statement with multiple catches during the 11-on-11 periods th at afternoon. It quickly became apparent that Kattus was not only a temporary injury-replacement, either. "He's turned heads ever since he got here," quarterback Will Levis said. "Obviously, not the biggest dude at the tight end position, but he's got a really good feel for the game. He's a smart kid, physical kid, brings the energy. "...I think he'll get some burn this year. Michigan has added graduate transfer Eyabi Anoma, a top-rated defensive end coming out of high school in 2018 who has been at Alabama, then Houston and Tennessee-Martin. Anoma's name appeared in the University of Michigan directory as a student in the Sc hool of Social Work on Wednesday, and his status as a graduate transfer was confirmed to The Detroit News early Thursday by Michigan football spokesman Dave Ablauf. Anoma will be immediately eligible for the Wolverines, whose season opens Sept. 3 against Colorado State.Anoma was a five-star recruit out of St. Frances Academy in Baltimore, a school that has produced several current Michigan players, including running back Blake Corum and linebacker Nikhai Hill-Green. Michigan associate head footba ll coach Biff Poggi had been St. Frances' head coach. Anoma shared a message Thursday morning on Twitter about his latest move, saying he is grateful for "all the positive and negative remarks" and is dedicating the rest of his football career to his gra ndmother. Eyabi Anoma, a five-star member of the 2018 Crimson Tide signing class, is now headed to Michigan, according to On3.com. It would be the fourth stop in a college career that began with high potential. The Baltimore product was the No. 4 overall recruit i n the 247Sports composite for 2018, behind just Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields and Xavier Thomas (Clemson). Anoma had just nine tackles in 12 appearances as a freshman in Tuscaloosa before being dismissed from Alabama. "We have a law that protects player s and students in what you can and can't say," Nick Saban said when asked about Anoma in August 2019. "The guy was dismissed from school, and that's really all I can say about it." Anoma then went to Houston but never appeared in a game before transferri ng to UT-Martin.There he played for head coach Jason Simpson - the father of Alabama freshman quarterback Ty Simpson. After sitting out the 2020 season, Anoma made the OVC's All-Newcomer team with 36 tackles, 9.5 of which were for a loss including six sacks. His best game was an eight-tackle (4.5 for loss) performance against Austin Peay. Anoma entered the transfer portal for a third time earlier this week. - Birmingham News

He has worked with the Buffalo City Mission, organizing a coat drive in December, collecting coats , jackets, gloves and hats. In its first year, the coat drive resulted in over 50 coats and other warm items of clothing being donated to the Buffalo City Mission. He also donates his time volunteering at the Buffalo City Mission's kitchen, helping prepa re food, emptying the garbage and whatever else he can do to help. Michel is a three-year letterwinner for the Bulls. Tyler Shough was loping along near the front of the pack during a team conditioning run one day this summer when a long-legged Texas Tech teammate blew past him. It wasn't any of the Red Raiders' lanky wide receivers, nor a defensive back or a running ba ck. The guy finishing strong was Baylor Cupp, a 6-foot-7, 253-pound tight end. "I'm usually out in the front with a lot of that combo group," Shough said, "and I see Baylor come up and fly by me. I'm like, 'What the heck? Where did this guy come from?'.. .He's so physically talented." There's never been a question about Cupp's talent level. Coming out of Texas high-school power Brock in the spring of 2019, Cupp was rated the No. 16 recruit in the nation by 247Sports and No. 134 by Rivals. As tight end pr ospects go, he was as good as it gets. In three years since at Texas A&M, Cupp missed two full seasons with ankle and shoulder injuries. He finally got onto the field for 10 games last year, mostly as a backup. Nevertheless, thinking his status in the Aggies' eyes might have been diminished by his injury history and not wanting to be labeled, Cupp looked for a fresh start this off-season. He's found it at Texas Tech, where coaches and teammates want to see him reach his potential. As recently as November, A&M coach Jimbo Fisher said Cupp "still has a chance to be a great player." "I was pretty highly recruited and people had a high expectation for me," Cupp said. "Those were some really tough injuries, and I haven't played much since I got into college, but I think I'm 10 times a better player than I was coming out of high school. I've developed a ton. Linebacker Will Honas and defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah spent the open portion of Monday morning's practice pedaling away on stationary bikes, rather than participating in drills with their position groups. Their coaches said Tuesday that holding th em out was strictly a matter of limiting stress on pre-existing injuries that kept them out during spring practice, and that they should be good to go once the season starts Sept. 3 against South Dakota.Honas, a graduate transfer from Nebraska, is expected to be an immediate contributor at weak-side linebacker, but he has a history of knee problems. "With the knee surgeries that he's had, just like with (linebacker) Nick Allen," linebackers coach Steve standard said. "We've got to be careful abou t how much wear and tear we put on those guys, and they've been good communicators with us and let us know how it's feeling. Linebacker T.D. Roof will miss the 2022 OU football season after suffering a biceps injury that will require surgery, head coach Brent Venables said Tuesday. Roof, the son of defensive coordinator Ted Roof, transferred from Appalachian State after his fa ther joined Venables' staff in the offseason. Roof has played in 45 career games during his career at Appalachian State, Indiana and Georgia Tech.Venables said it hasn't been decided whether or not Roof would pursue a medical redshirt to play next season. "We'll look at what all the options are," Venables said. "He's been through a lot, been at multiple schools and nothing's been easy for him. We'll see. We'll give him all kinds of opportunity based on where his heart is and after cooler heads so metimes prevail. We'll give him another day or two to figure all that out." While Roof was unlikely to be a starter, he was expected to be in the mix for playing time and likely contribute on special teams also. More than a year and a half after he first arrived on campus, Brock Bowers is about as well known a name in Athens as anybody that currently plays for the Georgia football team and that includes one Stetson Bennett IV. Media policies as they are under Bu lldogs coach Kirby Smart, true freshmen do their talking on the football field. So Tuesday afternoon was the first time Bowers stood before reporters and answered questions since he became a Bulldog. Figure it will be the first of many given his star pow er now. Something he didn't exactly see coming. "I didn't really expect much during fall camp last year, it just kind of all happened," Bowers said. "And pretty fast, too." If Bowers were to replicate his freshman season output-which may be a stretch giv en how deep the tight end room is now and the Bulldogs aren't guaranteed to play 15 games again-he would stand No. 2 on the program's all-time touchdown career list behind only Terrence Edwards' 30 who did that in four seasons.Bowers tied A.J. Gre en for most receptions ever by a Georgia freshman with 56, broke the program record with 16 touchdown catches and had the most receiving yards ever by a tight end with 882. "I wasn't really focused on that at the moment," he said. "I was kind of worried about every single game. Just winning every single game and just trying to help the team as much as I could." "We didn't know exactly what we had with Brock," offensive coordinator Todd Moken said. "We knew he was rare in how he worked, and how he came e very day. How that developed and kept going, we just kind of fell into it. We knew he was fast once he could catch and run with it. That's different.
