*Tuli Tuipulotu, Southern California, Player News

Southern California All-America defensive lineman Tuli Tuipulotu will enter the NFL draft. Tuipulotu, who led the FBS with 13 1/2 sacks as a junior, announced his decision on social media Tuesday. The 6-foot-4, 290 pound edge rusher had two tackles and one sack in the eighth-ranked Trojans' 46-45 loss to Tulane in the Cotton Bowl on Monday. He finished his college career with 21 sacks and 32 tackles for loss in 32 games. The younger brother of USC and Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman Marlon Tuipulotu, Tuli impressed as a freshman during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season by getting two sacks and 2 1/2 tackles for loss in six games.

His last season was his best, with Tuipulotu finishing second nationally in tackles for loss with 22. The defensive equivalent to Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Caleb Williams, Tuipulotu's disruptive play helped a flawed defense lacking talent and depth - USC allowed 29.2 points per game and 6.5 yards per play - produce timely negative plays and takeaways. Tuipulotu received the Morris Trophy as the best defensive lineman in the Pac-12, an award voted on by players. He was also a finalist for the Bednarik and Nagurski Awards presented to the top defender in college football and the Lombardi Award for the top offensive or defensive lineman. Led by Williams and Tuipulotu, USC finished 11-3 and played in the Pac-12 title game and a New Year's Six bowl in coach Lincoln Riley's first season. The Trojans were 4-8 in 2021 when Clay Helton was fired as coach after two games. - AP College Football

Tuli Tuipulotu, the Pac-12's defensive player of the year, said he's still undecided on whether he'll declare for the draft. But the defensive lineman had no doubts about playing at least one more game for USC. "I'm for sure playing in the bowl game," Tuipulotu said. "Can't leave my brothers out there." After leading the nation in sacks (12.5), it's unlikely that Tuipulotu's draft stock would rise much higher with another season at USC. But he said he would weigh a return to USC against his NFL potential after the Trojans play Tulane in the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 2. "That's something I've got to consider," Tuipulotu said, when asked about the NFL. "But I'm just focusing on the game. When the time comes to make the decision, I'll make the decision." - Los Angeles Times

LSU moved up to fifth and Southern California was sixth Tuesday night in the College Football Playoff rankings behind Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan and TCU. The top four remained the same for the third straight week, but the teams chasing changed order after Tennessee lost to South Carolina last Saturday night. Two huge games this weekend could create more clarity. Michigan is at Ohio State on Saturday and USC hosts Notre Dame, which checked in at 15th in the selection committee's rankings.

There are two more rankings left. The final ones on Dec. 4 set the field for the College Football Playoff. The semifinals will be played Dec. 31 in the Peach and Fiesta bowls. The national championship game will be played at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. Alabama was seventh, though the Crimson Tide don't seem to have a realistic route to make the College Football Playoff for the eight time in nine years. LSU and Georgia are already locked into the Southeastern Conference title game. Clemson came in at ninth and Tennessee fell to 10th. - AP College Football

While Marlon Tuipulotu was slated to step into a bigger role along USC's defensive line, Tuli Tuipulotu was set to step into his older brother's shadow. So far, both have impressed. Helton singled out Marlon as one of the standouts of Saturday's scrimmage, praising his leadership in the absence of All-Pac-12 defensive tackle Jay Tufele, who opted out of the season. The younger Tuipulotu, meanwhile, has had "one of the better camps of anybody on our team," Helton said. "He looks like a monster," Helton said of the freshman defensive end. "He's 275 but runs like he's 240 - I mean, great athleticism, has pass-rushing skills. Obviously, his older brother is on him every day making sure that he's doing right on and off the field, so he has a really bright future." - Los Angeles Times
