Ainias Smith spoke to his Texas A&M teammates about the importance of starting fast before Saturday night's game against South Carolina. Then he made sure the Aggies did just that. Smith had a 95-yard punt return for a touchdown and Jalen Wydermyer added two TD catches as No. 17 Texas A&M built a huge first-half lead and coasted to a 44-14 rout of South Carolina. The Aggies forced a punt on South Carolina's first drive and Smith returned it for the score. It was the longest punt return for a touchdown i n the FBS this season and the longest for the Aggies since Dustin Harris had a 96-yard return for a TD in 2012 against South Carolina State. "My message to the team was...let's start strong and go out here and get an edge on them real quick," Smith said. "And it just so happened that my opportunity came and I was actually going to be that guy." The star rushing duo of Isaiah Spiller and Devone Achane continued to do damage for the Aggies. They combined for 256 yards and two touchdowns a week after rushing for 292 yards and three touchdowns. Texas A&M (6-2, 3-2 SEC) raced to a 31-0 lead by halftime, and Achane's 35-yard touchdown run made it 41-0 late in the third as the Aggies improved to 8-0 all-time against South Carolina. "That's what a domina nt SEC football team looks like and they played like it," South Carolina coach Shane Beamer said. It was the third straight victory for Texas A&M, which knocked off top-ranked Alabama two weeks ago before beating Missouri last week. - Texas A&M/AP Colleg e Football

"We came here last night and all the kids were ta lking on the field about how negative things have been here - how they got their tails kicked. It painted a picture to me of how many negative things were in their heads. I don't know if I've done anything any good (at UTSA), but I know one thing – my kids don't play scared. We put out those bad memories and we don't play with fear." Garrett Shrader rushed for three touchdowns and threw for two, including one to Damien Alford with 19 seconds left, to lift Syracuse to a 41-36 victory over Virginia Tech on Saturday. The Orange (4-4, 1-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) scored 14 points in th e final 2:28 to snap a three-game losing streak. Shrader's 45-yard scoring toss to Alford, who beat Virginia Tech's Dorian Strong, was the difference. "This is going to be one of those moments," Syracuse coach Dino Babers said. "I really see this as bein g one of those moments that starts the change. I can't promise you it's going to change in W's and L's, but I can tell you it's going to change in everything else." Syracuse cut a 36-27 deficit to 36-34 on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Shrader to Courtne y Jackson with 2:28 remaining. The Orange's defense then stopped the Hokies on the ensuing possession, leading to Shrader's winning toss to Alford, who out jumped Strong at the 7 and ran it for the score. "That was a catch I have to make," Alford said. " I didn't see the play (he was hit as he was throwing)," Shrader said. "I just heard the stadium get kind of quiet. When you're away, that typically means it's a good thing." Shrader threw for 236 yards and rushed for 174, accounting for 410 of Syracuse's 550 yards of total offense. Michigan got off to a sluggish start, perhaps peeking ahead to playing Michigan State. Then the Wolverines used a strong finish to seal a matchup of undefeated rivals. Blake Corum and Hassan Haskins combined for 229 yards rushing and four touchdowns, car rying No. 6 Michigan to a 33-7 win over Northwestern on Saturday. Shortly after the victory, Jim Harbaugh's thoughts had already shifted to facing the ninth-ranked Spartans on the road. "All focus is there," he said. The Wolverines (7-0, 4-0 Big Ten) led the Wildcats (3-4, 1-3) by just three at halftime. They pulled away by outscoring them 23-0 in the first 16:40 of the second half. "We played pretty solid in the first half to give ourselves a chance," Northwestern coach Pat Fizgerald said. "And, then w e reverted back to some bad habits." Corum finished with 119 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Haskins ran for 110 yards and two scores.Corum jukes defenders with shifty moves while Haskins runs through them with power. "We both bring different th ings to the table," Corum said. "We feed off each other." Michigan had 294 yards rushing, nearly 50 yards more than its average. "They're the best rushing offense in the country for a reason," Fitzgerald said. Cade McNamara was 20 of 27 for 129 yards for the Wolverines, whose inability to throw the ball downfield might prove to be a problem against tougher teams. - Michigan/AP College Football

Ryan O'Keefe rushed for one touchdown, caught a pass for another and UCF defeated Memphis 24-7 on Space Night Friday. On a night themed to honor UCF's ties to the nation's space program - complete with the unveiling of special uniforms - the Knights were somewhat low orbit as Mikey Keene completed 11 of 19 passes for 63 yards - his lowest yardage since the season opener. Meanwhile, the Knights gained 215 yards on the ground with Isaiah Bowser rushing for 111 yards on 26 carries, his second 100-yard rush ing game of the season.Peter Parrish, starting for Memphis' injured Seth Henigan (right hand), went 31-for-48 passing for 215 yards but threw three interceptions. His final pick came with less than five minutes remaining. An unnecessary roughness penalty against UCF advanced Memphis to a first down at the 27 and Parrish' shot to the end zone was intercepted by Dyllon Lester. Parrish guided the Tigers close to the end zone once more in the closing minutes, advancing to the 12-yard line, but a thir d-down pass to the end zone was broken up by UCF's Justin Hodges and a fourth-down run by Parrish was short. Parrish was also the Tigers leading rusher with 60 yards gained on 22 carries but he was sacked six times for a loss of 39 yards. - UCF/AP Colleg e Football

Illinois linebacker Jake Hansen will miss the rest of the season after having knee surgery. Hansen, who was injured in the second quarter against Wisconsin on Oct. 9, made the announcement Wednesday on Twitter. "It pains me to say that I will not play an other game as an Illinois football player," Hansen tweeted. "I would like to thank everyone that has been a part of my journey as an Illini especially my family, teammates, coaches, strength staff, athletic trainers, academic counselors, and fans! I will look back at my time here with no regrets and will continue to cherish every moment I enjoyed here. With that said I look forward to pursuing my life long dream of playing in the NFL!" Hansen's 12 forced fumbles made him the NCAA's active career leader and ranked second on the Illinois all-time chart behind Simeon Rice's 13. He led the nation with 14 takeaways over the 2019-20 seasons. In five games this season, Hansen had 32 tackles, including 2.5 for loss and a sack, to go with two forced fumbles. - AP College Football
