 Hassan Haskins, Michigan, Player News

  12/04/21 - RB Hassan HaskinsSr/2022, Michigan, 6-2, 227 (DS#14 RB) + More +

Hassan Haskins ran for two second-half touchdowns and broke a school record while running back Donavan Edwards threw a 75-yard TD pass to help No. 2 Michigan capture its first Big Ten title in 17 years and a probable playoff berth with a 42-3 rout Saturday over No. 15 Iowa. Resurgent Michigan (12-1, No. 2 CFP) has won five straight and if it reaches the playoff, as expected, would need one more win to return to Indianapolis to play for its first national championship since 1997.

It's been an improbable run since coach Jim Harbaugh took a pay cut following a dismal 2020. The Wolverines started this season unranked and picked to finish in the middle of the Big Ten East, whose champion has won the last nine conference crowns. And it came on an emotional night when Michigan paid tribute to the victims from Tuesday's school shooting, which resulted in the deaths of four students at Oxford (Michigan) High School. They handed the Hawkeyes (10-3, No. 13) their second straight title game loss and prevented coach Kirk Ferentz from capturing his first conference crown since 2004. Iowa lost to Michigan State in the 2015 title game and this one came on a night both quarterbacks, Spencer Petras and Alex Padilla, struggled against the Wolverines. - Michigan/AP College Football

NOV 28 WALTER CAMP NATIONAL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: HASSAN HASKINS, MICHIGAN, Senior, Running Back, St. Louis, MO/Eureka Senior,...Hassan Haskins rushed for 169 yards (on 28 carries) and tied a Michigan single-game record with five touchdowns as the sixth-ranked Wolverines defeated second-ranked Ohio State 42-27. With the win, Michigan improved to 11-1, and clinched a spot in next weekend's Big Ten championship game. Notes: Hassan Hawkins and Aidan Hutchinson are the eighth and ninth Michigan players to earn Walter Camp National Defensive Player of Week honors since 2004, and the first since former Wolverine linebacker Chase Winovich (Sept. 23, 2017). - The Walter Camp Football Foundation

Hassan Haskins scored five touchdowns and Aidan Hutchinson had three sacks, helping No. 6 Michigan finally beat No. 2 Ohio State 42-27 Saturday to give Jim Harbaugh his first win as a coach against the Buckeyes. The Wolverines clinched the Big Ten East and will play in the conference title game next week with playoff hopes in hand. Michigan (11-1, 8-1 Big Ten, No. 5 CFP) advanced to the conference championship for the first time. The Wolverines now have a chance to win a Big Ten title for the first time since 2004 and a national championship for the first time since 1997. Minutes after the game, long-suffering fans filled the Big House turf to celebrate a rare win in the storied series and they were in no rush to leave as music blared. Ohio State had won a school-record eight straight in the rivalry and 15 of 16 to turn The Game into its game.

The Buckeyes (10-2, 8-1) blew their chances to continue their dominance with 10 penalties, many before the snap, and because they simply could not stop Michigan's running game. Harbaugh clearly had his team ready to beat the Buckeyes. After Harbaugh's pay was slashed in his new deal last winter in part because of his lack of success against the Buckeyes, he reshaped his coaching staff again and renamed a running-heavy period of practice the “Beat Ohio,” drill for to add another layer of focus on the rivalry. It seemed to work. Haskins had 169 yards rushing on 28 carries, scoring a go-ahead touchdown late in the second half and four more after halftime to pad Michigan's lead. Blake Corum returned from a two-plus game absence to run six times for 87 yards, helping the Wolverines gain a total of 297 yards on a ground against a rival that has pushed them around for much of this century. Harbaugh also seemed to out coach Ryan Day, who had not lost a Big Ten game, by sprinkling in some surprise plays such as a slot-around with A.J. Henning running for a 14-yard run to cap the game-opening 10-play, 75-yard drive. - Houston/AP College Football

  11/07/21 - RB Hassan HaskinsSr/2022, Michigan, 6-2, 227 (DS#14 RB) + More +

Hassan Haskins had to carry a heavier burden in the backfield because Blake Corum was injured. He delivered. Haskins ran for a career-high 168 yards and a touchdown, helping No. 9 Michigan bounce back from its first defeat with a 29-7 win over Indiana on Saturday night. "It was a different feeling, but I had to get the job done," Haskins said. The Wolverines (8-1, 5-1 Big Ten) were coming off a deflating defeat, blowing a 16-point, third-quarter lead in a 37-33 loss to rival Michigan State last week. "That's out of our control, but going forward, we said, somebody has to pay and it just happened to be Indiana," Michigan defensive end David Ojabo said. The fifth-ranked Spartans lost for the first time this season earlier in the day, 40-29 to Purdue, and fell into a second-place tie with Michigan behind No. 6 Ohio State in the Big Ten East Division.

The Hoosiers (2-7, 0-6) have lost five straight games, collapsing in a season that started with them hoping to contend for at least a division title. "Our expectations were high in the beginning, and this isn't what we expected," linebacker Micah McFadden said. "So, it hurts." Haskins had 27 carries, matching a career high, without Corum on the field for much of the game. Corum, who has been among the nation's leading rushers all season, ran once for 4 yards and dropped a perfect pass in the flat for the second straight week before leaving the game. "I don't think it's serious," coach Jim Harbaugh said. "I don't know if it's mild. Somewhere less than serious." - Michigan/AP College Football

  10/23/21 - RB Hassan HaskinsSr/2022, Michigan, 6-2, 227 (DS#14 RB) + More +

Michigan got off to a sluggish start, perhaps peeking ahead to playing Michigan State. Then the Wolverines used a strong finish to seal a matchup of undefeated rivals. Blake Corum and Hassan Haskins combined for 229 yards rushing and four touchdowns, carrying No. 6 Michigan to a 33-7 win over Northwestern on Saturday. Shortly after the victory, Jim Harbaugh's thoughts had already shifted to facing the ninth-ranked Spartans on the road. "All focus is there," he said. The Wolverines (7-0, 4-0 Big Ten) led the Wildcats (3-4, 1-3) by just three at halftime. They pulled away by outscoring them 23-0 in the first 16:40 of the second half. "We played pretty solid in the first half to give ourselves a chance," Northwestern coach Pat Fizgerald said. "And, then we reverted back to some bad habits." Corum finished with 119 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Haskins ran for 110 yards and two scores.

Corum jukes defenders with shifty moves while Haskins runs through them with power. "We both bring different things to the table," Corum said. "We feed off each other." Michigan had 294 yards rushing, nearly 50 yards more than its average. "They're the best rushing offense in the country for a reason," Fitzgerald said. Cade McNamara was 20 of 27 for 129 yards for the Wolverines, whose inability to throw the ball downfield might prove to be a problem against tougher teams. - Michigan/AP College Football

No. 19 Michigan found out, almost the hard way, that its running game can be slowed down. Hassan Haskins ran for touchdowns the first two times the Wolverines had the ball to help them take a 17-point lead, but the undefeated team had to hold on to beat Rutgers 20-13 on Saturday. "Gritty game," coach Jim Harbaugh said. "It wasn't pretty, but when they start making a space for pretty on the scoreboard then we'll worry about that." Michigan (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten) opened conference play by running the ball on its first seven snaps and Harbaugh's conservative game plan almost cost him.

After leading 20-3 at halftime, the Wolverines failed to pick up a first down on their first four possessions in the second half. "We just couldn't really find a rhythm and that's the first time that's happened when I've been in the game," quarterback Cade McNamara said. The Scarlet Knights (3-1, 0-1) rallied from a 17-point, third-quarter deficit to pull within seven early in the fourth quarter, but Valentino Ambrosio missed a short field goal. On their next possession, they turned it over on downs and fell to 1 of 4 on fourth down. "We're going to be aggressive," Rutgers coach Greg Schiano said. "We're not here to be close." - Michigan/AP College Football

2020 ALL-BIG TEN FOOTBALL HONORABLE MENTION (COACHES): Hassan Haskins,...Haskins leads the Michigan backfield with 375 yards on 61 carries. He has averaged 6.1 yards per rush, with just five negative yards all season and a team-high six touchdowns. Haskins has been a downhill bruiser for the Wolverines. Heading into the Big Ten Championship Weekend, he is coming off consecutive 100-yard performances against Rutgers (109 yards) and Penn State (101 yards) and needs just three rush yards to reach 1,000 in his career. - Michigan Football

The redshirt sophomore entered Saturday leading the team in rushing but received just one carry in Week 4 against Wisconsin. While the Wolverines' run game got off to a slow start against Rutgers, they remained committed to it and were rewarded in the second half. Instead of frequently rotating the backs like the in previous four games, Haskins handled the bulk of the load, finishing with 110 rushing yards and the game-winning touchdowns on 22 attempts. No other running back had more than six, although Blake Corum, Chris Evans and Zach Charbonnet each had at least one reception.

Haskins has proven to be a receiving threat out of the backfield, which was probably the reason why he didn't see many snaps after Michigan fell behind early against Wisconsin, but he has clearly been the most effective runner of the quartet through the first five games. "His play, talk about heart," Harbaugh said. "The amount of runs that Hassan had that were yards after contact this game -- tough, efficient, outstanding runs. Just tremendous." While Haskins was impressive Saturday, it still seems likely Corum, Evans and Charbonnet will still see snaps in passing situations, but we should see more of Haskins moving forward. - Ann Arbor News

Hassan Haskins ran for 125 yards and a touchdown, Zach Charbonnet added 116 yards rushing, and No. 16 Michigan needed a late surge to put away Illinois 42-25 on Saturday. The Wolverines (5-1, 3-1 Big Ten) built a 28-0 lead by halftime, but turnovers and ineffective offense helped the Illini (2-4, 0-3) cut the lead to 28-25 with 12:50 left in the fourth quarter. Dre Brown ran in from a yard out and then converted a 2-point conversion for the Illini.

Michigan responded with a long drive capped by Shea Patterson's 5-yard touchdown pass to Donovan Peoples-Jones. Patterson ran for a score after Michigan forced a turnover at the Illini 1 to seal it for Michigan. Matt Robinson, starting for the injured quarterback Brandon Peters, a graduate transfer from Michigan, was 16 of 25 for 192 yards and one touchdown for Illinois. He also ran for a score. Michigan racked up 489 yards total offense to Illinois' 256. - Michigan/AP College Football
