Michigan football has some help headed its way on the defensive side of the ball. Cam Goode, a 6-foot-2, 315-pound nose tackle in the transfer portal, plans to join the team this summer, he announced Friday evening. Goode spent the last three seasons at the University of Central Florida, where he appeared in 33 games and started five from 2019 to 2021. He was a big part of the Knights' rotation last year and became a proven disruptor over the middle.

In 13 games, Goode led UFC with four forced fumbles to go along with his 24 tackles (four for a loss), three sacks, interception and three pass breakups. He only started three times, but he made more than made up for it when he got into the game. Among Goode's highlights last season: Forcing two fumbles in a loss to Navy, an interception, sack and quarterback hurry in a blowout win over UConn, and a sack and two hurries in UCF's Gasparilla Bowl win over Florida. - Ann Arbor News

Sevion Morrison was never overwhelmed during his first few weeks at Kansas. Morrison, a running back who will be a redshirt sophomore in the fall, decided to transfer from Nebraska in November. He chose Kansas a month later, and once he began taking classes in mid-January, he felt welcomed by his new teammates and community. "I'm really enjoying it," Morrison said. "I can say that like, ever since we got here, it was like we were already treated like family...We were kind of settled in from the first week. It's real good." A 6-foot, 212-pound running back who grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Morrison arrived in Lawrence with a bit more familiarity with the school than most players who decide to transfer to Kansas. He was recruited and offered a scholarship by former coach Les Miles, but he chose to play for the Cornhuskers in August 2019, prior to his high school senior season.

The four-star recruit was among the top 15 running backs in his class and the top 250 high school players in the country, according to Rivals.com. He ran for more than 5,000 yards while at Edison High, including 2,728 yards as a junior and 1,798 yards as a senior, and had more than 20 scholarship offers, with Wisconsin, Minnesota, Mississippi State and Washington among the schools that also recruited him. - Lawrence Journal World

Lewis Powell, who is in his seventh season coaching Utah's defensive ends, also played for the Utes from 2001-03. So he's seen a lot of talented, highly skilled and productive defensive lines over the years. This spring, Powell said the defensive ends group he's working with now is the most athletic in program history. "It's a good young group. Practices have been really competitive," he said. "We have a really good, deep, athletic group. I think it's the most athletic group that's ever been here." The Utes return Van Fillinger, Miki Suguturaga and Jonah Elliss, while Connor O'Toole has been switched from wide receiver to defensive end.

While Utah must replace Mika Tafua, who is off to the NFL, and Xavier Carlton, who transferred to Cal, Powell is optimistic about what this position can accomplish next fall. "We have an awesome dynamic. Van and Miki are stout and strong. Connor and Jonah are really athletic, really high-ceiling," he said. "We clocked both of those guys at 4.5. I don't think we've ever had that kind of athleticism, ever. I think it's going to be a group by committee. I'm excited by the growth of all five, six guys participating in spring ball." Coach Kyle Whittingham said he feels good about Fillinger, Elliss, O'Toole and Suguturaga. "Jonah Elliss has had a really good spring. Connor O'Toole, who moved from wide receiver to defensive end, it seems to be a great fit for him. Miki Suguturaga is a guy that has played his best football this spring. So those four guys right now are the top four at that position. We have a couple of guys that are coming this summer that we're excited about as well." - Deseret News

Former Oregon Ducks wide receiver Jaylon Redd expected to spend the past four months rehabilitating his fractured foot and preparing for next week's NFL draft. Instead, what should have been an exciting time in his life, filled with promise and hope, was spent contending with dread and uncertainty. Last December, Redd was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor on his pancreas. The news shocked the Redd family, especially given Jaylon's youth and excellent health. "I would not wish it on anybody," said his father, Fred Redd. "It was the toughest thing I've been through as a dad." But after successful surgery in January, Redd, 23, has been working his way back into physical condition in hopes that his NFL dreams might resume. "I'm feeling good," Redd said. "I'm ready to get back into it. I'm ready to go. My hope is for somebody to give me an opportunity." Stunned by the news was former Oregon offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead, now the head coach at Akron. Even Moorhead didn't know what Redd had been going through but felt confident that if anyone could recover from such adversity to get back onto the field and succeed, it would be Redd. "From a pure mentality standpoint, if there's ever a kid that I've been around who can overcome this type of adversity and is equipped to do it because of his mental toughness, it would be Jaylon," Moorhead said. - The Oregonian

  04/23/22 - CB Sevyn BanksrSr/2023, LSU + More +

Sevyn Banks became the latest outgoing Ohio State football transfer to head to the SEC, announcing on Twitter that he has committed to LSU. Banks, a Florida native, joins former Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly's first roster with the Tigers. He announced in January he was entering the portal as a graduate transfer. He withdrew his name from NFL Draft consideration due to an injury that kept him off the field at the end of last season. Banks did not play the first two games of the season or the final three games.

In between he generally held down a starting spot opposite freshman Denzel Burke. He totaled eight tackles and one pass breakup. As a first-time starter in 2020, he recorded a team-high seven pass breakups with 23 tackles, one interception and a 55-yard fumble return touchdown. He was one of the secondary's more consistent performers on OSU's drive to the national championship game. Banks joins receiver Jameson Williams (Alabama), quarterback Jack Miller III (Florida) and defensive lineman Darrion Henry-Young (Kentucky) as recent OSU transfers to SEC programs. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Former Texas A&M tight end Baylor Cupp signed with Texas Tech on Tuesday. "Baylor will be a big-time addition to our tight ends room," Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire said in a press release. "He has great size and runs well in space, which is exactly what we are looking for at tight end in this offense. We are excited to welcome him and his family to our football program, and we can't wait until he arrives on campus this summer." Cupp, who suffered a pair of season-ending injuries at A&M, will have three years of eligibility left. - Bryan/College Station Eagle

  04/21/22 - CB Sevyn BanksrSr/2023, LSU + More +

Former Ohio State cornerback Sevyn Banks has signed with LSU, adding depth at a position of need and another transfer to the roster, the school announced Tuesday. Banks played four seasons at Ohio State. He appeared in 36 games and made 15 starts, bringing experience at outside cornerback. During his career, Banks recorded 43 tackles, 13 passes defended and two interceptions. He earned honorable mention All-Big Ten honors as a junior. Banks entered his senior year with NFL draft buzz, but he suffered a knee injury last spring that lingered into the season, limiting his production. Banks then missed the final three games with an injury. He entered the transfer portal in February. LSU needed more cornerbacks after losing every starter at the position this offseason. The Tigers signed UL junior Mekhi Garner, Oklahoma State senior Jarrick Bernard-Converse and two incoming freshmen, but the lack of depth on the roster has been exposed this spring as Bernard-Converse recovers from a fractured foot. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Virginia Tech running back Jordan Brunson and tight end Jared Gibble entered their names into the transfer portal on Tuesday, a source with knowledge of the situation confirmed. Tech coach Brent Pry said throughout spring camp he expected plenty of attrition coming out of spring camp once the new staff got to completely evaluate the roster. The Hokies also need to get to 85 before the rest of the 2022 signing class enrolls in the coming weeks, a situation Pry alluded to at his final press conference leading up to the spring game. "I've been telling them from Day 1 that they can't be afraid from hard conversations in this program," Pry said. "And if they are, they're probably not at the right place. We owe it to them to be forthright and to be genuine in our evaluation of where they're at." The two transfers leave Tech with 87 projected scholarships for the fall, but that number doesn't include Nebraska transfer defensive lineman Pheldarius Payne, a verbal commitment that hasn't been officially announced by the school. - Richmond Times-Dispatch

Sherrod Greene was on his way to becoming a star linebacker at South Carolina. Injuries knocked that path off course the past two years. In 2020, Greene fractured his hip in the season opener against Tennessee and missed the rest of the year. In 2021, the North Carolina native suffered a right ankle injury on the second play of the Sept. 18 game against Georgia and was lost for the season. Rather than calling it a career or possibly entering the NFL Draft, Greene announced in December that he would be back at USC for a sixth season. "Got so much left to give!! I'm not done yet," Greene said in a Twitter post two days before Christmas. Greene opened up this spring about how hard the struggles the past two years have been.

He credited those in his inner circle for keeping his spirits up during a challenging portion of his career. "It was tough because the year before that I broke my hip," Greene said. "Just having back-to-back season-ending injuries could take a toll on me, but I had good support in my corner with my family, and my mom kept my head on straight. So it wasn't as bad as it may seem, but it was a good trial for me." The Gamecocks coaching staff brought Greene along slowly this spring and monitored him, and they'll do the same in the fall so he can be ready to play each week. - Rock Hill Herald

With Armani Rogers gone, the dual-quarterback system that the Bobcats clung to over the past two seasons has been thrown out the window. However, that might not be a detriment. Kurtis Rourke, who will likely become Ohio's lone starting quarterback next season, can benefit from the extra time on the field. He's already been allotted more snaps during spring practices. Ohio's other quarterbacks, like C.J. Harris and Callum Wither, each took their fair share of snaps Saturday, but Rourke was on the field for the majority of practice. His position as next year's starter is nearly set in stone. Albin believes Rourke has been due for more responsibility and was impressed with his performance throughout spring ball. "He had a really good spring, as he should, because he's at the next step," Albin said. "He got a lot of experience. He did it all through spring ball, and he finished today. I thought he had a good day." - The Post

Georgia's offensive line is set to get a rather significant piece back in the fold. Amarius Mims withdrew from the transfer portal and is rejoining the Bulldogs after he took a visit to Florida State, a source confirmed Monday morning. That came eight days after Mims entered the portal. Mims and Georgia athletics didn't respond to messages left with them on Monday morning about the news. Getting back the 6-foot-7, 330-pound Mims, a former five-star from Bleckley County High, would strengthen the depth at offensive tackle. Mims was working as the second-team right tackle during the spring but missed at least the last week of practices.

Right tackle and two-year starter Warren McClendon and left tackle Broderick Jones, another former five-star signee, seem to have a strong hold on their spots entering preseason practices. Austin Blaske worked at the top right tackle backup in Saturday's G-Day spring game. True freshman right tackle Earnest Greene emerged this spring and was the backup left tackle. Mims could compete at guard where Xavier Truss, Devin Willock and Warren Ericson are top starting candidates. Mims played in eight games as a backup last season as a freshman. - Athens Daily Banner

Before Andrew Adair entered the transfer portal, he was a little worried about how it was going to go. He had heard about some players getting "stuck" in the portal, not receiving any offers and didn't want that to be him. After his paperwork went through, the former Liberty offensive lineman's phone started to light up. Adair then quickly realized that he wasn't going to end up with the worst case scenario he had heard about. Within five or 10 minutes of officially being in the transfer portal, Adair had almost 100 direct messages. His time in the portal was almost as quick, announcing his decision to leave the Flames via social media on Wednesday, receiving an offer from James Madison that night and was on a visit in Harrisonburg on Thursday afternoon. Adair watched the Dukes' spring practice from the sideline and less than 24 hours later, he announced his decision to commit to JMU on Friday morning through Twitter. - Daily News-Record

"Big Cinco" might just be a nickname in word only for DJ Uiagalelei moving forward. Clemson's rising junior quarterback revealed Friday evening that he had lost around 20 pounds during the offseason. He said he got up to around 260 pounds last season and is now 240, but wants to try and get down to 230 or 235. A large part of the slimming-down process was cutting out sweets and fast food. That includes In-N-Out, a staple in Uiagalelei's home state of California, and Bojangles, one of the first companies to offer him a name, image and likeness deal last summer. "Bojangles," he said, hesitating, "I mean, Bojangles, right now, I'm cutting it out just a little bit, just kind of cutting it out but in moderation." As much as he'd like to eat ice cream or make a quick stop at Bojangles, Uiagalelei is thinking long-term about his overall health and what's best for his football career.

He compared his new mindset to recently retired NFL quarterback Tom Brady's approach to physical health and diet. "You kind of see like the TB12 diet and stuff like that where your body's like a temple," the Tigers' signal caller said. "You want to be able to treat your body like a Ferrari. I stopped eating fast food and trying to treat (my body) like a high-engine car, like a fancy car. Kind of just like good stuff in your body, and that's what I've been doing." - The State

Not able to participate in drills this week at the NFL combine because of January knee surgery, former Alabama wide receiver Jameson Williams believes he would have the fastest 40-yard dash time among prospects in the upcoming NFL draft. "I just know nobody could run with me," Williams said Wednesday. "I don't know no 40 time. I just know nobody could run with me. Just say whatever the fastest 40 time here is -- I'm faster." Williams said he did not have his 40-yard dash time at Alabama recorded during his lone season in Tuscaloosa. When the NFL last held its combine in 2020, former Alabama receiver Henry Ruggs ran that year's fastest 40-yard dash in 4.27 seconds. The record since the combine began electronic timing in 1999 was a 4.22-second dash by Washington's John Ross in 2017. Williams and his former Alabama teammate John Metchie will only take part in team interviews and medical evaluations this week in Indianapolis as they both recover from torn ACLs. - Birmingham News

Luke Goedeke had designs on being an NFL tight end when he reported for his first day of football practice at Central Michigan in 2018, even if his coaches secretly saw his future at a different position. A transfer from Division III Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Goedeke showed up to the equipment room and was told the only cleats available in his size were for an offensive lineman. Undeterred, Goedeke spent the next week and a half slipping and sliding across the practice field before he approached his position coach, Tavita Thompson, and asked what he could do to crack the playing rotation.

Thompson, a former Oregon State offensive tackle, suggested Goedeke switch to offensive line. "They told me this past year, which I had a feeling that was the plan all along, to just transition me to the offensive line," Goedeke said. "But it worked out in the end, so no complaints." Once a self-described "negative two-star" recruit, Goedeke now projects as a mid-round pick and one of the best feel-good stories in April's NFL draft. - Central Michigan Life
