  2019 ALL-MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE SECOND TEAM (COACHES): Inside Linebacker - Drake Spears, Western Michigan,...Spears and Treshaun Hayward have combined to form one of the best linebacking duos in the MAC with Spears contributing 88 tackles, 2.5 tackles for lost yardage, 0.5 sacks, two pass breakups, two interceptions, two fumble recoveries and a trio of quarterback pressures. Against Miami (Ohio), Spears flipped the game with a 74-yard interception for a touchdown that turned a 6-0 deficit into a 7-6 lead in the second quarter. Following the performance, he was tabbed the MAC West Division Defensive Player of the Week. Spears, from Aurora, Ill., also recovered a fumble at Ohio that helped extend WMU's lead from 3-0 to 10-0 in the second frame. - Western Michigan Football

  OCT 14/WEEK 7 MAC WEST DIVISION DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Western Michigan LB Drake Spears,...Western Michigan senior linebacker Drake Spears (Aurora, Ill.) led with seven tackles and one interception returned for a touchdown in a 38-16 win over Western Michigan. Spears intercepted Miami quarterback Brett Gabbert and returned it 74 yards for a touchdown to take a 7-6 advantage in the first half. Spears was part of a defensive effort that limited Miami to just 127 yards in the second half. His 74-yard interception returned for a touchdown was the first since Darius Phillips with a 43-yarder on Nov. 8, 2017. It was the Broncos first defensive touchdown since Patrick Lupro had a fumble return against Delaware State on Sept. 15, 2018. - MAC Football
