 Tyler Buchner, Transfer, Player News

  12/31/22 - QB Tyler BuchnerrJr/2026, Transfer, 6-1, 215 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Tyler Buchner accounted for five touchdowns to help offset two interceptions returned for TDs, and No. 19 Notre Dame beat 20th-ranked South Carolina 45-38 in a wild TaxSlayer Bowl on Friday. The highest-scoring game in Gator Bowl history was filled with big plays and memorable moments. But Buchner delivered the knockout blow when he found tight end Mitchell Evans wide open for a 16-yard touchdown on a third-and-7 play with 1:38 remaining. Buchner, who regained the starting job after Drew Pyne entered the transfer portal following the regular-season finale, threw for 274 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for 61 yards and two scores. But his three interceptions nearly proved too much to overcome.

O'Donnell Fortune returned one of them 100 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter, and DQ Smith returned another 47 yards for a score in the first. But Buchner bounced back from both miscues to earn his first victory in three career starts. Notre Dame (9-4, No. 21 CFP) overcame a 14-point deficit and won despite South Carolina's scoring on the two pick-6s and on special teams. Punter Kai Kroger connected with long-snapper Hunter Rogers for one of the oddest TDs in bowl lore. Spencer Rattler completed 29 of 44 passes for 246 yards for the Gamecocks (8-5, No. 19 CFP), with an interception and two touchdowns to Xavier Legette. South Carolina was missing a number of key starters, including running back MarShawn Lloyd, versatile tight end Jaheim Bell, tight end Austin Stogner, defensive lineman Zacch Pickens, safety Devonni Reed, cornerbacks Cam Smith and Darius Rush, and receivers Josh Vann and Jalen Brooks. Notre Dame played without All-American tight end Michael Mayer, standout edge rusher Isaiah Foskey, cornerback Cam Hart and defensive lineman Jayson Ademilola. - Notre Dame/AP College Football

Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner's sophomore season is suddenly over after two games due to injury. Deep down, Tommy Rees had to fear this day was coming. Back on Aug. 13, as Buchner publicly earned the nod as Notre Dame's starting quarterback, the Irish's third-year offensive coordinator made it clear that disappointed backup Drew Pyne had to stay ready. "This program needs Drew Pyne," Rees said. "There is zero doubt in my mind. I don't know when, how, why, where, but this program needs him right now and this program is going to need him moving forward. He needs to be ready to play." - South Bend Tribune

Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner is expected to miss the rest of the regular season with an injury to his nonthrowing shoulder that will require surgery. Fighting Irish coach Marcus Freeman said Monday that Buchner has a severe AC joint sprain in his left shoulder. Buchner was injured in the fourth quarter of Notre Dame's surprising loss to Marshall over the weekend and was scheduled to have surgery Tuesday. Drew Pyne, who came off the bench after Buchner was hurt, was listed as the starter on Notre Dame's depth chart for this Saturday's home game against California. Notre Dame is 0-2 under first-year coach Freeman after beginning the season ranked fifth in the country. - AP College Football

Not since Brady Quinn was heading into his senior season has Notre Dame been ranked higher in the Associated Press preseason college football poll. In their first season under new coach Marcus Freeman, the Irish checked in at No. 5 on Monday after occupying that same spot last week in the USA Today/Coaches Poll. It's the first time since 2006, when Charlie Weis' second edition was preseason No. 2, that Notre Dame could make a top-five claim heading into the year. The Irish finished last season ranked eighth after going 11-2 and losing to Oklahoma State in the Fiesta Bowl, which also marked Freeman's debut at the helm.

Ohio State, which Notre Dame will visit on the night of Sept. 3 in the season opener, is ranked second. Fourth-ranked Clemson (Nov. 5), 14th-ranked USC (Nov. 26) and No. 25 BYU (Oct. 8 in Las Vegas) are the other ranked teams on the Irish schedule this fall. This marks the 18th time Notre Dame has been ranked in the top five of the AP preseason poll since it started in 1950. The only other time the Irish were ranked fifth was 1978, when they were coming off a national championship under coach Dan Devine. That 1977 team, which opened at No. 3, was Notre Dame's only eventual national champion ranked in the AP preseason top five. In the seven-plus decades of the AP preseason poll, the other Irish national champions opened sixth (1966), eighth (1973) and 13th (1988). - South Bend Tribune

Long considered the prohibitive favorite to open the season as Notre Dame's starting quarterback, Tyler Buchner learned in a Friday night position meeting he had indeed won the two-man battle with Drew Pyne. Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman made the public announcement Saturday, three weeks before the fifth-ranked Irish open the season at No. 2 Ohio State. It will be the first career start for Buchner, who appeared in 10 games as a freshman last season, mostly as a change-of-pace option to Jack Coan. "We just felt like it was time," Freeman said. "It was time to give the offense clarity on who's going to be the starting quarterback."

Calling it an "extremely difficult decision" and one he and offensive coordinator Tommy Rees "spent an enormous amount of time" discussing, Freeman cited the "entire body of work" from both quarterbacks. Buchner, the top returning rusher on the team after a 336-yard, three-touchdown debut season with his legs, has just 35 career pass attempts. That's the fewest for a Notre Dame season-opening starter since Brandon Wimbush had five pass attempts heading into 2017. Buchner, who averaged 7.3 yards per carry last season, passed for 298 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions in 2021. He did not appear in the Fiesta Bowl loss to Oklahoma State and missed the Blue-Gold Game with a sprained ankle after impressing the coaching staff through the first 13 practices. - South Bend Tribune

Multiple sources told The Times that the Big Ten will not be adding another Pac-12 school at this time. It would have been a natural assumption that a pairing of Oregon and Washington would follow their longtime conference brethren, but that is off the Big Ten's board for now. Maybe the preferences of USC and UCLA - Fox's priority because of the the brands and the Los Angeles market - have something to do with that?. That means Notre Dame will be the next driver in any movement with the Big Ten, which has long coveted the Fighting Irish for all of the obvious reasons - brand power, football tradition, academic reputation and location.

If Notre Dame rebuffs the Big Ten and elects to stay independent in football and play other sports in the Atlantic Coast Conference, it's possible the Big Ten takes a pause and continues to consider the remaining Pac-12 brands and ACC brands that fit the Big Ten model, such as North Carolina, Virginia and Georgia Tech. But, make no mistake, Notre Dame is the ultimate get and the Big Ten has more to offer the Irish than ever before - a chance to share a conference with historic rival USC along with other rivals Michigan, Purdue and Michigan State; a chance to shoot its take from media rights into a new stratosphere; and a chance to assure itself of a rightful place at the power brokers' table going forward. Notre Dame has to be getting the itch. If it isn't, its longtime TV partner NBC will have good reason to nudge it into considering the Big Ten's offer. Reports are that NBC wants a Big Ten game as part of the conference's new media rights package. - Los Angeles Times
