Deshaun Fenwick, Oregon State, Player News

Deshaun Fenwick came off the bench to rush for 107 yards, and No. 17 Oregon State nearly dealt Florida a rare shutout, winning the Las Vegas Bowl 30-3 on Saturday. The Beavers (10-3) reached 10 victories for the third time program history and the first time in 16 years. They first accomplished the feat in 2000, when coach Jonathan Smith was the team's quarterback. Oregon State won seven of its final eight games. After the Beavers took control early in the third quarter by going up 17-0, the only real question was whether Florida would keep its NCAA-record scoring streak intact. The Gators last were shut out in 1988, a span of 436 games and 57 games longer than any other team. The streak remained alive when Adam Mihalek made a 40-yard field goal with 37 seconds left.

It was the first start for Florida redshirt freshman quarterback Jack Miller, and it showed. He completed 13 of 22 passes for 180 yards. Miller, an Ohio State transfer, was elevated to the starting lineup when Anthony Richardson declared for the NFL draft and backup Jalen Kitna was arrested on child pornography charges. The Gators closed their first season under coach Billy Napier with three consecutive losses. This also was their second 6-7 record in a row. Fenwick entered this game third at Oregon State in rushing with 446 yards. But he was called into duty when Pac-12 Conference offensive freshman of the year Damien Martinez went out with an apparent shoulder injury on the Beavers' second drive. Martinez had rushed for at least 100 yards in six consecutive games and needed just 30 yards to become the fourth freshman in program history to gain 1,000 for the season. He had only 12 yards on three carries before the injury. Fenwick and the Beavers' defense led Oregon State to the emphatic win. - Oregon State/AP College Football

Deshaun Fenwick admits that Corvallis is nothing like home. "Corvallis, man?" he says with a laugh. "It's a place where I check my ego at the door. It's pretty peaceful out here. It's different." Fenwick, the newest addition to Oregon State's running back room, is a Bradeton, Florida, native who spent the past three years at South Carolina. The stark contrast between life in the southeast and life in the Pacific Northwest has taken some getting used to. But after just a few weeks of spring ball, Fenwick has seen enough to know that Corvallis is the ideal location for the next act of his career. A 6-foot-2, 226-pound redshirt sophomore, Fenwick views himself as a player who can do "everything" at the running back position and will try to prove that as he spends the next few months battling for the starting running back spot.

"Me being an east coast guy, living in the South, it's kind of a culture shock," Fenwick said. "Ultimately, it's pretty good. For me, it just gives me time to figure out what I need to do to improve myself and improve all my football skills to get to the next level." According to those who work with him everyday, Fenwick has hit the ground running since he arrived. A.J. Steward is in his first season as Oregon State's running backs coach and said Fenwick's football IQ has stood out immediately. "He knows the playbook like the back of his hand," Steward said. "You would have thought he's been here for a few years already with his understanding of the playbook." - Gazette Times

What did Oregon State coach Jonathan Smith make of his 2021 football signing class, officially completed Wednesday with the addition of four transfers, two scholarship high school seniors and nine preferred walk-ons? We know what is being said nationally, including some lazy analysis. It is low-rated for the most part, a given going in because the lack of scholarships OSU could offer in 2021. Of the players the Beavers signed, there isn't the star power of an Oregon or USC. What the national and regional rhetoric doesn't include are transfers. That is an area where Oregon State could see immediate payoff. Receiver Makiya Tongue (Georgia), cornerback E.J. Jones (Kansas), running back Deshaun Fenwick (South Carolina) and offensive lineman Heneli Bloomfield (Utah State) signed Wednesday. All are currently enrolled at OSU, on campus and planning to take part in spring football. At least three of the four are serious contenders for starting jobs in 2021. - The Oregonian

Oregon State has landed yet another talented player out of the transfer portal. Deshaun Fenwick, a running back who recently elected to transfer from South Carolina, announced on social media Wednesday Tuesday evening that he has committed to Oregon State. A 6-foot-1, 230 pound redshirt sophomore, Fenwick will have three years of eligibility remaining for the Beavers. In a reserve role for the Gamecocks in 2020, he ran for 297 yards and one touchdown on 54 carries and racked up a season-high 82 yards against Ole Miss. Fenwick is a former 3-star recruit who held offers from numerous SEC powerhouses out of high school. He chose South Carolina over offers from Georgia, Ole Miss, Missouri and Iowa State, among others. - Gazette Times

Deshaun Fenwick, South Carolina's second-leading rusher, has entered the transfer portal, a team spokesman confirmed to The State. Fenwick appeared in eight games this season, backing up star running back Kevin Harris. He racked up 297 yards and a touchdown on the year, as well as catching 14 passes for 108 yards. His top performance of the season came against Ole Miss, when he tallied 82 yards on just nine carries. Going into the year, Fenwick was expected to compete for touches behind star freshman MarShawn Lloyd. When Lloyd went down for the season with a torn ACL in training camp, Fenwick earned some praise from the coaching staff but ultimately lost out on the starting job to Harris. - Rock Hill Herald
