Austin Aune, North Texas, Player News

  01/04/23 - QB Austin AunerJr/2023, North Texas, 6-2, 215 (DS#42 QB) + More +

North Texas quarterback Austin Aune said before the 2022 season began that it would be his final year playing college football. There were a few twists along the way, but that is exactly where the former Argyle standout ended up on Monday, when he declared for the NFL draft. Aune made the announcement on his Instagram account just days after a standout season that saw him guide UNT to an appearance in the Conference USA championship game and the Frisco Bowl.

The announcement ended what will be remembered as one of the more unusual and memorable careers for a UNT player - and for a college football player in general. The former Argyle standout spent six seasons playing minor league baseball and turned 29 during the 2022 season. He had one season of eligibility remaining, which led to an interesting few days. Aune got married and had a daughter late in his college career. It seemed unlikely he would return for another year on the college level, especially after he said before the season that he was ready to wrap up his time in college. - Denton Record

Aune nearly left UNT after last season and said this fall that this would be his final year with the Mean Green. The former Argyle standout wavered late in the season, but ultimately decided to move on. - Denton Record

Austin Aune threw two touchdown passes and North Texas fought off Rice for a 21-17 win Saturday to secure a bid in the Conference USA title game against UTSA in the Alamodome on Dec. 2. The Mean Green (7-5, 6-2) will get a chance to avenge their 31-27 loss to the Roadrunners - also played in the Alamodome - which occurred on Oct. 22. With the win, North Texas denied Rice (5-7, 3-5) a chance at bowl eligibility. North Texas' defense secured the win on Rice's final drive when Kevin Wood sacked AJ Padgett for an eight-yard loss to set up a second-and-18 from Rice's own 43-yard line with 1:20 remaining.

On third down, Padgett, lined up in shotgun formation, dropped the ball and kneeled to pick it up but was ruled down as officials believed his knee touched the ground on the recovery attempt. Facing fourth-and-23, North Texas linebacker KD Davis intercepted Padgett to end it. Davis and fellow linebacker Larry Nixon III each recorded 13 tackles. Ikaika Ragsdale ran for 122 yards on 17 carries with a touchdown for North Texas. His 6-yard touchdown catch with 10:35 left put North Texas up for good. Padgett threw for 229 yards and a touchdown for the Owls. - North Texas/AP College Football

Austin Aune threw for 317 yards and three touchdowns to get North Texas off to a quick start and the Mean Green finished strong to defeat Western Kentucky 40-13 on Saturday. Kaylon Horton turned a screen pass into a 28-yard score on the first possession for North Texas (5-4, 4-1 Conference USA) and Aune found Damon Ward for a 56-yard score on the second. The Hilltoppers (5-4, 3-2) got back in the game with Austin Reed's 5-yard TD pass to Joshua Simon and a couple of field goals to trail 20-13 at the half. Western Kentucky had four drives before the clock ran out to end the game on the final possession, but missed a field goal, punted and threw an interception before losing the ball on downs. North Texas scored on its final three drives, starting with Aune's TD pass to Ikaika Ragsdale. Ayo Adeyi followed with a 39-yard burst to the end zone before Ragsdale closed it out with an 11-yard run with 2:08 remaining. Reed threw for 320 yards. - North Texas/AP College Football

  05/10/22 - QB Austin AunerJr/2023, North Texas, 6-2, 215 (DS#42 QB) + More +

There hasn't been a UNT player in years who is as big of a lightning rod as Austin Aune. UNT's nontraditional quarterback is a former minor league baseball player, a dad and is 28. Aune lost the starting job heading into last season before winning it back. He went on to throw for 1,991 yards and nine touchdowns. UNT brought in transfers JD Head and Stone Earle to compete with Aune in spring practice. Neither came close to knocking Aune out of the lineup.

The Mean Green could still find a late transfer, but the bottom line is Aune steadily improved last season and continued that growth in spring practice. The former Argyle standout will be a much better player heading into what he has said will be his final year of college football than he was to start last year. That alone puts UNT well ahead of where it was a year ago. - Denton Record

  03/04/22 - QB Austin AunerJr/2023, North Texas, 6-2, 215 (DS#42 QB) + More +

Austin Aune thought long and hard about his future after North Texas' loss to Miami (Ohio) in the Frisco Football Classic last fall. Aune spent six seasons playing minor league baseball, a semester at Arkansas and three seasons at UNT before finally grabbing the starting quarterback job for an extended period last season. The former Argyle standout considered walking away after his daughter, Palmer, was born earlier this year. The chance to build on a five-game winning streak to cap the regular season last fall led him to come back, with one caveat. "I have two years of eligibility left, but this for sure will be my last year playing football," Aune told the Denton Record-Chronicle on Wednesday as UNT prepared for the opening of spring practice on Friday. "I want to get in a full year of playing, have fun and try to win a conference title and a bowl game." Aune, 28, is juggling working toward that goal and caring for his infant daughter. (He had to duck out of a phone interview to change a diaper.) "Having a daughter changed our lives a lot, but it's so fun being a dad," Aune said. "The biggest thing is learning to function without a lot of sleep. Other than that, it's great. My wife [Kristin] and I team up to take care of her." - Denton Record

Austin Aune threw a touchdown pass and ran for another score, Ethan Mooney made a 27-yard field goal with 7 seconds left and North Texas held on to beat UTEP 20-17 on Saturday. On third-and-8 from the 32, Aune hit Detraveon Brown for a 58-yard gain to the to 10 and, after a North Texas timeout, Mooney's kick put the Mean Green in front. UNT (4-6, 3-3 Conference USA) took a 17-7 lead into the fourth quarter before a 17-play, 98-yard drive ended when Isaiah Johnson was stopped for no gain on fourth-and-goal from the 2.

UTEP's Gavin Hardison went 4-of-5 passing - including completions to Jacob Cowings of 46 yards on the first play of the drive and 27 yards to the Mean Green 4 - on a seven-play, 98-yard march capped by Ronald Awatt's 4-yard touchdown run. After North Texas went three-and-out, Gavin Baechle made a 37-yard field goal to make it 17-all with 55 seconds left. Cowings finished with five receptions for 174 yards, including a 76-yard touchdown, and Awatt ran for 85 yards on 17 carries for UTEP (6-4, 3-3). UNT has won three in a row following a six-game losing streak to keep its hopes for bowl eligibility alive. The Mean Green play at Florida International next Saturday before completing their regular season at home against No. 23 UTSA on Nov. 27. - North Texas/AP College Football

It wasn't that long ago that quarterback Austin Aune and his teammates were essentially on their own. The COVID-19 pandemic forced UNT to shut down its athletics facilities last summer. The Mean Green's players trained any way they could, running in parks and lifting at home. Aune can see the difference the return to a regular routine has made for the Mean Green over the last few weeks. "Our offseason has been great," Aune said recently. "The biggest difference between this offseason and last year is we couldn't do the offseason program last year. We're in great shape to have a good year. The culture of the team is in a good place. Guys are pushing each other and holding each other accountable." UNT is hoping that change will help it build on a 4-6 season that culminated with a loss to Appalachian State in the Myrtle Beach Bowl. The Mean Green have played in bowl games in four of their five seasons under coach Seth Littrell. UNT will enter the fall looking to break through for its first bowl win since the Heart of Dallas Bowl at the end of the 2013 season. - Denton Record

North Texas still has a long way to go before opening the 2021 football season. Summer workouts have yet to wrap up. There is still an entire fall camp for UNT to sort out how it will build on its fourth bowl appearance in five years. That didn't prevent UNT coach Seth Littrell from laying out where the Mean Green stand now when it comes to the race for the starting quarterback job on Thursday. "Right now, in June, it's Austin Aune," Littrell said during the first session of UNT's annual coaches' caravan. "Austin had a great spring and is having a great summer. Other guys did as well. We will see how it goes as we move forward as we always do. I feel very good about where we are at. Austin did a lot of great things this past season." The race for the starting quarterback job was just one of a host of topics UNT coaches and officials addressed during a wide-ranging series of interviews during a virtual event. - Denton Record

Austin Aune made his first start for North Texas in its game against Southern Miss on Saturday at Apogee Stadium. The former Argyle standout enjoyed a few good moments, make a couple of mistakes and left it all with an empty feeling after the Golden Eagles knocked off the Mean Green 41-31 at Apogee Stadium. "To me it's all wins and losses," Aune said. "I don't care if we run for 500 yards and get zero passing yards. I want to get the ball to our playmakers and win football games." UNT didn't come close to that goal on a night when it was shorthanded across the board due to injuries and the impact of positive COVID-19 tests and contact tracing. UNT announced before the game that it would be without seven players, including starting linebackers Tyreke Davis and Kevin Wood. UNT needed its offense to carry the team without those players. Aune threw for 339 yards and two touchdowns. It just wasn't enough for the Mean Green to pull out the win. Aune played in each of the Mean Green's first two games of the season. Aune enjoyed a breakout performance in UNT's loss to SMU on Sept. 19, throwing for 276 yards and two touchdowns. That performance earned him the starting job on a night when Bean didn't play. - Denton Record
