Mater Dei has produced several of USC's most recent starting quarterbacks: Matt Leinart, Matt Barkley and JT Daniels among them. Young was committed to USC for 14 months until September of last year, when he flipped his commitment to UA. Daniels has since transferred to Georgia, where he could be the starting quarterback. UA and Georgia meet in Bryant-Denny Stadium on Oct. 17. - Montgomery Advertiser

Alabama freshman quarterback Bryce Young made his debut against Missouri late in the third quarter Saturday. Young came in with 1:09 left in the third quarter as Alabama started a drive at its own 25-yard line. On his first snap, he handed the ball to Trey Sanders. On his second play, he completed a 6-yard pass to DeVonta Smith. Young finished his debut 5-of-8 passing for 54 yards. He also rushed four times for 2 yards. Alabama defeated Missouri 38-19. Just that he was in the game had Alabama Crimson Tide fans excited. - Montgomery Advertiser

It was the foregone conclusion for the final weeks of camp, but Mac Jones is officially Alabama's starting quarterback with redshirt freshman Paul Tyson and true freshman Bryce Young listed as backups behind him. The buzz around Young as a potential immediate starter was put on hold after an offseason of remote meetings and no spring practice, one not conducive to a freshman quarterback getting up to speed quickly. - Montgomery Advertiser

  08/18/20 - QB Bryce YoungFr/2024, Alabama, 5-11, 194 (DS#3 QB) + More +

In a return to something resembling normalcy, a few on-field questions were asked when Alabama football players did interviews Tuesday afternoon. And if there's one non-pandemic storyline that's peeking its head above the crowd, it's the quarterback dynamic. Mac Jones is the returning veteran while Bryce Young is the mystery blue-chip recruit whose yet to be seen publicly in a crimson jersey. Senior receiver DeVonta Smith got a good look at the No. 1 QB recruit from southern California. He's impressed. "He's going to be a great quarterback," Smith said via video conference. "With him not having a spring and just coming during the summer, he learns quick."

Young was the No. 2 overall recruit in the 2020 signing class who enrolled early for spring practice. Only the 15-date rehearsal was canceled a few hours before the first pads were set to pop in March. The 6-foot, 194-pound rookie still had a chance to work out with teammates away from the official workouts. "I like what I'm seeing. He's ready," Smith said. "Just the way that he approaches the game and handles himself, he's going to be a great quarterback." - Birmingham News
