Deuce Vaughn, Kansas State, Player News

  10/15/20 - RB Deuce VaughnFr/2024, Kansas State, 5-05, 168 (DS#7 RB) + More +

Chris Vaughn's day job took him to the Atlanta area this weekend. He's the Dallas Cowboys' southeast area scout and business duties called for him to attend the Tennessee-Georgia game. But Vaughn kept his eyes on the Kansas State-TCU game in Fort Worth. His son, Deuce (Christopher II), has become one of Kansas State's biggest playmakers early on this season. And the true freshman out of Round Rock Cedar Ridge made his presence felt in K-State's 21-14 victory over TCU, contributing 30% of the offensive yards. "Deuce was fired up and excited for the win," Chris told the Star-Telegram on Sunday. "He understands that even though there wasn't millions of yards in the game, that's a big win in that atmosphere against that team on the road. He grasps how big of a win it was for the team."

K-State started true freshman quarterback Will Howard with senior Skylar Thompson out with an injury. Howard held his own but, as stated, it wasn't an impressive day offensively for either team. K-State finished with 289 yards of total offense with Deuce contributing 88 yards (45 receiving, 43 rushing). Vaughn's lone reception went for 45 yards during a 91-yard TD drive by the Wildcats in the first half. Even though he didn't score, Vaughn has become known for his home-run ability and showcased it on that play. The 5-foot-5 Vaughn is a matchup problem for defenses. He entered the game having consecutive games with 70-plus yard receptions against Oklahoma and Texas Tech. "That was a good play when they needed it," Chris said. "Any explosive plays against that defense is huge. Coach [Gary] Patterson does a great job and that's a tremendous win for K-State." - Fort Worth Star

OCT 5 BIG 12 NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK: Deuce Vaughn, RB, Fr., K-State,...Vaughn became the first K-State true freshman since 2008 to rush over 100 yards in a game with 113 against Texas Tech. He recorded a rushing TD of 18 yards and a 70-yard TD catch with 2:07 remaining in the fourth quarter to secure the win. His 194 scrimmage yards were the most by a Wildcat freshman in the Big 12 era. Vaughn collected Newcomer of the Week for a second-consecutive week. The remaining honorees are first-time recipients for their respective awards. - Big 12 Football

Deuce Vaughn had a rushing touchdown and another receiving, Will Howard threw for 173 yards and a score and Kansas State held off Texas Tech for a 31-21 win Saturday. Up 24-21 with two minutes left, Howard found Vaughn across the middle on third down for a 70-yard touchdown pass to seal the win. Henry Colombi threw for 244 yards and two touchdowns, Xavier White added 113 yards rushing and a score on 12 carries for Texas Tech, which lost its ninth game in 10 tries against the Wildcats. Colombi had one big mistake despite an efficient performance, throwing into double coverage on a drive deep in Wildcat territory which was intercepted by Jahron McPherson late in the fourth quarter. Both starting quarterbacks spent more time in the locker room than the field after suffering injuries in the first half. Red Raiders QB Alan Bowman left the game after he took a hit to his right leg midway through the first quarter and didn't return. - Kansas State/AP College Football

Kansas State ranks last in the Big 12 in rushing offense, averaging 78.5 yards through two games. Even so, Wildcats freshman running backs Deuce Vaughn and Keyon Mozee played key roles in K-State's 38-35 upset last week at then-No. 3 Oklahoma. Vaughn broke a short pass reception for 77 yards, and Mozee lined up as a split receiver, was left uncovered and hauled in a pass for 78 yards. Both plays set up third-quarter touchdowns that helped Kansas State rally from 28-7 and 35-14 deficits. Then Vaughn went 38 yards for a fourth-quarter touchdown that tied the score at 35, and kicker Blake Lynch made a decisive 50-yard field goal with 4:32 left. Vaughn is a 5-foot-5, 168-pound freshman from Round Rock Cedar Ridge. "He's dynamic in space. He's a play-maker," Tech coach Matt Wells said. "It doesn't matter what his size is. He plays big." - Lubbock Avalanche Journal

The secret is out on Deuce Vaughn. After playing in just two games for Kansas State, the 5-foot-5 freshman running back has already entered the national spotlight as one of the country's best newcomers. Maybe he surprised Arkansas State and sneaked up on Oklahoma, but now that he has gained 245 all-purpose yards, scored a pair of touchdowns and earned a nickname (The Sand Blaster) from Fox announcer Gus Johnson, there's no chance Texas Tech will sleep on the Wildcats' top playmaker Saturday. "He is dynamic in space," Texas Tech coach Matt Wells said earlier this week. "He is a playmaker. It doesn't matter what his size is. He plays big. He is a very talented player and he made big plays against Oklahoma." Vaughn played so well in his first two college games that he rocketed to the top of K-State's scouting report this week. Wells made that abundantly clear when he was asked to break down what he saw from K-State's victory at Oklahoma. "They got (Vaughn) out in space," Wells said, "a couple times in empty (formations) and out of the backfield. They have got the two outside receivers and the two smaller tailbacks that are explosive and dynamic and can make you miss. That's what they did." - Kansas City Star

He led the Wildcats to a comeback win at No. 3 Oklahoma with 174 all-purpose yards and a rushing touchdown. - Big 12 Football

Another year, another stunner. Much to the chagrin of No. 3-ranked and heavily favored Oklahoma, the Kansas State Wildcats found a way again. A year after handing OU its only regular-season loss in Manhattan, the Wildcats took their show on the road Saturday with the same result, rallying from a 21-point second-half deficit for a 38-35 victory at Memorial Stadium. Senior kicker Blake Lynch, who missed two field goal attempts in a season-opening 35-31 upset loss at home to Arkansas State just two weeks earlier, drilled a 50-yarder to give the Wildcats their only lead of the game with 4 minutes, 32 seconds left. The defense took it from there, getting two straight stops, including senior safety Jahron McPherson's interception to seal it with 34 seconds on the clock. Senior quarterback Skylar Thompson and true freshman running back Deuce Vaughn led the offensive effort in the second half as K-State scored the game's last 24 points. Defensively, the Wildcats gave up 517 yards total offense, but forced four turnovers and got a blocked punt from AJ Parker that set up Vaughn's game-tying 38-yard touchdown run with 8:17 to go. - Topeka Capital Journal

Chris Klieman makes it clear to his younger players as soon as they arrive at Kansas State that there are two traits - above even raw physical ability - that will get them on the field faster than anything. Running back Deuce Vaughn and quarterback Will Howard, plus three other true freshmen, got the call last Saturday in the Wildcats' season opener at Bill Snyder Family Stadium in large part because they showed in a short time that they fit the bill. "The main product of that, as we've seen, is Deuce. He had a great game, some explosive plays, and he has some things that you can't teach. For him to come in, game one, as a true freshman and do the things he did, it just shows how mature he is, and how much he's really bought in and how much film he watched during the week."

Vaughn said after the game that attention to detail definitely fast-tracked his climb up the depth chart to the No. 2 spot behind senior Harry Trotter. "Without a doubt, just diving into the playbook as soon as I got it," Vaughn said. "I signed my letter of intent around December and I ended up getting the playbook and my iPad and stuff in February, so just right then I took it day-by-day, chunk-by-chunk, just went through and looked at everything and didn't get ahead of myself. "I looked at all the installments they had in 2019 (preseason) camp, and I knew if I did that I would give myself a great opportunity to be able to play early." Vaughn's first career carry went for 12 yards, and he had a 24-yarder on the same drive, then finished it off with a 3-yard touchdown early in the second quarter to put K-State up 14-7. "It is honestly surreal," Vaughn said of the touchdown. "Last night I went to bed dreaming about scoring my first touchdown in Bill Snyder Family Stadium and playing for the Wildcats. - Topeka Capital Journal

Deuce Vaughn may not yet be a household name among Kansas State football fans, but he certainly has caught linebacker Justin Hughes' attention. So much so that when Hughes and Elijah Sullivan, the Wildcats' other starting linebacker, spot him in the offensive huddle during practice they immediately sound the alarm. "When we see him in the backfield, I know me and Elijah talk to each other and say 'Deuce, Deuce, Deuce,' " Hughes said of Vaughn, a shifty 5-foot-5, 168-pound true freshman running back from Round Rock, Texas. "We point him out every time he's on the field because we know he's getting the ball or they're setting him up to get the ball, so we just try to contain him and let the (defensive) ends know he's in so they can keep contain and keep him in the box."

Hughes is not the only one to take notice of Vaughn, who found himself sharing the No. 2 running back spot with senior Tyler Burns when K-State released its two-deep Monday ahead of Saturday's 11 a.m. season opener against Arkansas State at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. "He's got a great skill set," head coach Chris Klieman said Tuesday during his game week virtual news conference. "He can catch the ball extremely well (and) he's got great vision. "He can run inside, he can run outside, and we're excited about seeing what he can do, as well as a number of younger players." - Topeka Capital Journal
