Sedrick Van Pran-Granger, Georgia, Player News

Sedrick Van Pran, a rising senior and fourth-year player from New Orleans, announced Friday afternoon that he plans to return to UGA to play another season for the Bulldogs. Van Pran will be a third-year starter at center, where he earned second-team All-SEC honors this past season. More important, Van Pran was an offensive captain and an intellectual and emotional leader for his unit, which was runner-up to Michigan this past season for the Joe Moore Award, which goes to the nation's top offensive line. The Bulldogs already knew they were going to be without tackles Broderick Jones and Warren McClendon, underclassmen who declared for the NFL draft last week. Van Pran's return gives the Georgia offense a solid foundation in the middle of the line around which to build. - Macon Telegraph

And then there were 12. That's the current number of underclassman personnel losses off of Georgia's 2022 national championship team. There will be more between now and the declaration deadline day for hopeful NFL draftees, which is Monday (Jan. 16). There have been no great surprises so far. Freshman defensive back Jaheim Singletary entering the transfer portal would come close to unexpected. A consensus 4-star signee, with some 5-star ratings, Singletary leaves at a time when there will be some significant openings for playing time in the Bulldogs' secondary. However, the 6-foot-1, 175-pound resident of Jacksonville seemed to have fallen behind Daylen Everette and Nyland Green in the battle for reps behind Kamari Lassiter and Kelee Ringo.

Ringo, a third-year sophomore, is among four Georgia underclassmen who have declared for the NFL draft - so far. Defensive tackle Jalen Carter, tight end Darnell Washington and offensive tackle Broderick Jones, who announced Friday afternoon, also have gone public with their decisions. Third-year sophomore center Sedrick Van Pran and junior offensive tackle Warren McClendon also have earned high pre-draft grades and will have decisions to make before the deadline. The rest of Georgia's underclassman starters appear to be leaning toward returning for next season. - Atlanta Journal Constitution

Onto the next. That was the mindset of Georgia football about a week after winning its first national championship in 41 years last January, according to center Sedrick Van Pran-Granger. "We understood that last year had nothing to do with this year, so we had to work for everything," the redshirt sophomore said. That work by players and staff and a still-loaded roster even with a slew of NFL departures has gotten No. 1 Georgia to Monday's 7:30 p.m. College Football Playoff national championship game against upstart and No. 3 TCU at SoFi Stadium. Georgia is trying to become the fourth team to win back-to-back national titles since 1979, joining Nebraska in 1994-95, Southern Cal in 2003-04 and Alabama in 2011-2012. "It doesn't start when the season starts," Georgia coach Kirby Smart said Sunday morning. "It starts Tuesday when the season ends. And it just continues. I don't know that you can relax and just say, OK, we're going to be fine." You have to make it happen. And I think each and every year you have a different team."

Smart has won five national championships as a coach including four with Alabama as defensive coordinator under Nick Saban including in 2015 when he finished out the season after being hired by Georgia. The Crimson Tide won it in 2009, but went 10-3 the following year in a season that ended in the Citrus Bowl. Alabama completed back-to-back national titles in 2011 and 2012, going 12-1 and 13-1. The Crimson Tide lost eight NFL draft picks off that 2011 team including four first-round picks-running back Trent Richardson, safety Mark Barron, cornerback Dre Kirkpartrick and linebacker Don't'a Hightower. Six of those eight draft picks came from the defense. - Athens Daily Banner
