Receiver/return specialist Jaylin Lane tweeted Sunday that he has decided to transfer from Middle Tennessee State to Virginia Tech. Lane had tweeted Thursday that he had decided to enter the transfer portal. He made the All-Conference USA second team as a punt returner this season. He also earned honorable mention as both a receiver and kick returner. Lane had 69 catches for 940 yards and five touchdowns as a third-year sophomore this season.He averaged 8.4 yards on 18 punt returns and averaged 2 3.1 yards on 11 kick returns. Lane had 10 catches for 110 yards and one TD in the team's Hawaii Bowl win over San Diego State last month. In 2021, he made the All-Conference USA first team as a punt returner. He has two years of eligibility left, includi ng the extra year of eligibility that the NCAA gave all 2020 fall-sports athletes because of the coronavirus pandemic. - Roanoke Times

Lane finished the year with 42 receptions for 466 yards and four touchdowns, while also leading the team in punt returns (19 for 295) and kickoff returns (13 for 285 ). Jaylin Lane had a breakout freshman season, catching 42 passes for 466 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for 93 yards and a score last season. He also had a punt return for a TD and averaged more than 20 yards per kickoff return. His 15.5 average o n punt returns has earned Lane some preseason hype, including being named preseason All-American by Athlon. "I try not to look too far ahead," Lane said. Conference USA released the 2022 preseason watch list, as selected by the league's 11 head coaches on Monday. Five student-athletes from each of the conference's 11 member institutions are recognized as key players to watch ahead of the 2022 season. Repr esenting Middle Tennessee are WR Izaiah Gathings, WR Jaylin Lane, DE Jordan Ferguson, DL Zaylin Wood and punter Kyle Ulbrich. Gathings finished the 2021 season with 24 receptions for 302 yards and a touchdown after transferring from Gardner-Webb. The 6-4 , 222-pound wideout is poised for a breakout campaign in 2022. Lane, who has been on most preseason all-conference teams, finished the 2021 season with 42 receptions for 466 yards and four touchdowns, while also leading the team in punt returns (19 for 2 95) and kickoff returns (13 for 285). Jaylin Lane returned a punt 70 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the second quarter and added four catches for 91 yards and a score as Middle Tennessee overpowered FCS-member Monmouth 50-15 in a season opener on Saturday. Lane's punt return was the first score of the game. Monmouth answered with Tony Muskett's 22-yard scoring strike to Ezrah Archie to knot the score at 7.The Blue Raiders took the lead for good later in the second quarter on two Bailey Hockman TD passes - a 29-yarder to D J England-Chisholm and a 22-yarder to Lane. The Blue Raiders outscored the Hawks 22-0 in the fourth quarter to pull away. Hockman completed 17 of 22 passes for 215 yards and three TDs for Middle Tennessee. CJ Windham had five catches for 46 yards and a s core. Muskett threw for 177 yards, completing 25 of 39 passes, with one TD and an interception for the Hawks. Juwon Ferri rushed 18 times for 99 yards. Terrence Greene Jr. had five receptions for 71 yards.
