Ohio State football coach Ryan Day promoted receivers coach Brian Hartline to offensive coordinator on Friday. The six-year member of the Buckeyes coaching staff replaces Kevin Wilson, who left to become the head coach at Tulsa. The 36-year-old Hartline played at Ohio State and had a seven-year NFL career. He had been promoted to passing game coordinator prior to the 2022 season.Keenan Bailey, who has been on staff for the past seven years, most recently as a special assistant, was named tight en ds coach Friday, a position that Wilson had previously handled. Offensive line coach Justin Frye is getting the responsibility of run game coordinator. Ohio State will have some important spots to fill on the field, primarily at quarterback. Two-year sta rter C.J. Stroud is expected to enter the NFL draft, although he hasn't yet made a public announcement. Backups Kyle McCord and Devin Brown are expected to compete for the starting quarterback job. - AP College Football

When coach Ryan Day introduced Julian Fleming at a recent fundraising dinner for one of the NIL collectives supporting Ohio State, he had a story to tell about the junior wide receiver's resolve. "I'm probably embarrassing him a little bit," Day began. I n an intrasquad scrimmage held last week, Fleming's shoulder popped out, Day said. But instead of sidelining him for the rest of the practice, Fleming popped it back in himself and went on to catch two touchdowns. As he recounted the episode to the crowd of attendees, Day added that he is expecting "big things" from Fleming when the Buckeyes begin their season Sept. 3 with a top-five matchup against Notre Dame.Fleming, who has positioned himself for a role as a potential starter following the dep artures of Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson, felt his response in the scrimmage left him feeling more assured about his improvement over this offseason. "It definitely boosted my confidence a lot," Fleming said. "It's a painful thing, but sometimes pain is just in your mind. You've got to constantly work through little bumps and tweaks. Julian Fleming enters his third season with Ohio State football still endeavoring to display the talent that once made him a highly coveted prospect. According to coach Ryan Day, the junior from Pennsylvania took an important step over the summer. Streng th coach Mickey Marotti's champion tiers for offseason workouts are gold, red and blue. Yet above gold, a select group can also attain "Iron Buckeye" status. That's not a list the staff releases, but it's notable when Ryan Day attaches that designation t o anyone. After Thursday's first practice, Day said Fleming achieved an Iron Buckeye summer.The former five-star prospect and No. 1-ranked receiver in the 2020 class, slowed by injuries and blocked from a bigger role by stars now departed to the N FL, may finally be synching health with opportunity. "Julian Fleming had the best offseason he's had to this point," Day said. The potential ramifications for the offense are immense. Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson were both selected in the first round o f the NFL Draft. Jaxon Smith-Njigba returns from a record-setting season in the slot. Sophomore Marvin Harrison Jr. is the leading candidate for the X receiver as a bigger-bodied red zone threat. Fleming, though, could be the Z answer that takes the top off defenses as Olave once did. He totaled 86 yards and a touchdown on 12 receptions last season. Julian Fleming had barely begun his first Ohio State football spring when we first conceived of the Malik Hooker-Marshon Lattimore Watch List in 2020. Two full seasons later, few players have ever captured the essence of the list more completely. Eligibi lity is limited to Buckeyes entering their third year in search of their first (real) starting job. Players such as Jaxon Smith-Njigba and C.J. Stroud do not qualify, obviously. Nor do part-time starters such as Cody Simon and Miyan Williams. Fleming, th ough, checks all the boxes after two seasons for many of the same reasons as Lattimore (injuries) and Hooker (stuck behind stars).If not for Fleming's status as the No. 1 receiver in the 2020 recruiting class - and it's not like he campaigned for or requested that title - his career might not seem far off track. Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson commanded a lot of targets during Fleming's first two years in the program. Fleming earned starts in the 2020 Big Ten championship game and 2021 Rose Bowl w hen those first-round draft picks were unavailable. Talent, especially top-end speed, has never really been the question for Fleming. The departure of Olave and Wilson created a need for a new threat over the top of defenses while C.J.
