For the second time this season, Stanford must do without its leading rusher. First, it was E.J. Smith. This time, it's Casey Filkins. Head coach David Shaw announced Tuesday that Filkins "will be out a significant portion" of the season, "if not the res t of the year." Filkins has run for 478 yards on 122 carries (3.9 average). The junior suffered an arm injury at the end of a 23-yard run late in the third quarter of the Cardinal's 15-14 win over Arizona State on Saturday. The Sun Devils' Khoury Bethley was flagged for a late hit out of bounds on the play. Smith rushed for 206 yards in two games before he was sidelined for the rest of the season with an undisclosed injury. Though Stanford now is down its top two running backs, Shaw expressed optimism t hat the Cardinal can overcome those losses. - San Francisco Chronicle
