Phillip Brooks, Kansas State, Player News

Not only did the Wildcats get help through the transfer portal on Tuesday, but they also learned that wide receiver Phillip Brooks will return for a super-senior sixth year. With Brooks announcing his decision, K-State's rebuilding task at wide receiver became less daunting. The Wildcats' top three receivers - Malik Knowles, Kade Warner and Brooks - all were seniors, and Knowles already announced that he will not be back, while Warner's eligibility ran out.

Brooks not only ranked third on the team with 45 catches and second in receiving yards with 587 yards along with four touchdowns, but also was the Wildcats' top punt returner. He begins his final season with 129 career receptions for 1,538 yards and nine touchdowns, plus four punt return scores. - Topeka Capital Journal

Ask Phillip Brooks what he expects to accomplish this upcoming season and the senior Kansas State receiver will respond with a question of his own. Did you see the bowl game? His thinking: If you watched Brooks catch a team-high five passes for 69 yards while the Wildcats dismantled LSU 42-20 last January at the Texas Bowl, then you've already had a sneak peek at what he is capable of doing under new offensive coordinator Collin Klein. "My biggest asset is my quickness and my speed," Brooks said. "I will help a lot with that when it comes to underneath routes and getting open in space, making moves after the catch." It's exciting to think about what an expanded role might look like for Brooks.

The 5-foot-7 and 169-pound Lee's Summit West product has long been dangerous with the ball in his hands, but his best highlights have mostly come as a punt returner. Remember the time he returned a pair of punts for touchdowns against Kansas two years ago? Now he seems ready to start making more big plays as a wide receiver. Last season could be considered a mini breakout for him in that area, as he caught 43 passes for 543 yards and two touchdowns. Those numbers were huge improvements over his first three seasons in purple, when he caught a total of 41 passes for 366 yards and one score. At that rate of improvement, it's possible he could lead the Wildcats in catches this season. Maybe he could even push for 1,000 yards, something that hasn't been done in Manhattan since Tyler Lockett and Curry Sexton both accomplished the feat in 2014. - The Kansas City Star

Kansas State junior Phillip Brooks was name to the preseason All-Big 12 team as a kickoff/punt returner on Wednesday. Brooks, who also plays wide receiver, was a first-team All-Big 12 returner in 2020, but Wednesday's honor was his first preseason award. He was also named a preseason All-American by Phil Steele. Brooks enters the 2021 season tied for first among active players and tied for sixth in Big 12 history with three punt-return touchdowns. As a sophomore, he averaged 23.7 yards per return, which would have led the nation and set a new school record if he met the NCAA's required minimum (his 11 punt returns were one shy of the minimum). - Manhattan Mercury

Phil Steele, long one of the most notable college football writers in the country, picked a pair of Kansas State players for his All-America teams: junior Phillip Brooks and sophomore Deuce Vaughn. Steele released his All-America teams Wednesday. Brooks landed on the second team as a punt returner; Vaughn is a third-team selection as an all-purpose player. Steele also named Brooks to the All-Big 12 first team, with Vaughn on the all-conference second team as a running back. Other Wildcats on the All-Big 12 teams include offensive linemen Josh Rivas (second team), Cooper Beebe (third team) and Noah Johnson (fourth team), long snapper Randen Plattner (third team), wide receiver Malik Knowles (fourth team), defensive linemen Timmy Horne (fourth team) and Khalid Duke (fourth team), linebacker Cody Fletcher (fourth team), defensive backs Justin Gardner (fourth team), Jahron McPherson (fourth team) and punter Ty Zentner (fourth team). Brooks also was a third-team All-America selection by Steele at the end of last season. - Manhattan Mercury

Will Howard threw for 243 yards and two touchdowns while Justin Gardner returned an interception 25 yards for another score, helping the Wildcats (4-1) improve to 4-0 in the Big 12 for the first time since 2014. Deuce Vaughn added 71 yards rushing and another touchdown as Kansas State beat the Jayhawks (0-5, 0-4) for a series-record 12th straight time. Kansas has not beaten its Interstate 70 rival since Nov. 1, 2008, in Lawrence. Freshman Jalon Daniels was just 22 of 39 for 207 yards for the Jayhawks, who were playing their first game since coach Les Miles returned from a positive COVID-19 test. It also was their first game since running back Pooka Williams, an All-Big 12 selection a year ago, decided to opt out for the remainder of the season. - AP College/Kansas State Football
