Notre Dame survived Florida State backup quarterback McKenzie Milton's unlikely comeback on an emotional night when the Seminoles honored Bobby Bowden. Jonathan Doerer made a 41-yard field goal in overtime and No. 9 Notre Dame escaped with a 41-38 victor y after Florida State overcame an 18-point deficit Sunday. Florida State kicker Ryan Fitzgerald's 37-yard attempt sailed wide left on the first overtime possession, allowing Notre Dame to run a few plays and set up Doerer's kick. "What's most important i s going on the road, winning the opener against a team that presented a lot of challenges," Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said. "We know we got work to do, but I like this team. We'll get better and we'll make a lot of improvement in week 2." Bowden, the coaching great who won two national titles with the Seminoles, died at 91 of pancreatic cancer Aug. 8.A logo of Bowden's trademark hat and the script "Bobby" was on the 25-yard line, and Florida State coaches also wore logos on their polo shirts. Florida State's Marching Chiefs spelled out "Bobby" on the field at halftime and played "Amazing Grace." Milton, the UCF grad transfer quarterback who hadn't played in a game since suffering a gruesome leg injury in November 2018, fired a 22-yard strike to Ja'Khi Douglas on his first pass. Florida State has lost five straight season openers and, while the Seminoles rallied, they can also point to three turnovers as well as nine penalties. Travis threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score. But he also threw three interceptions - two to Notre Dame star safety Kyle Hamilton. The Fighting Irish capitalized all three times by scoring touchdowns. - Notre Dame/AP College Football

Sophomore safety Kyle Hamilton made seven tackles, second most on the team, before leaving in the third quarter with an apparent left leg/ankle injury. If there's one guy the defense cannot afford to lose, if this team cannot afford to lose, it's No. 14. No Hamilton changes everything in the back end of the Irish defense, and not for the better. Ed Miller's first prediction about Kyle Hamilton's Notre Dame career came true. Not only would Hamilton not redshirt, Miller believed, but he'd also make a significant impact as a freshman last season. What Miller prophesied may have seemed like a reach at the time. With veteran starting safeties Alohi Gilman and Jalen Elliott heading the position group, Hamilton's opportunities to show his prowess were limited. Yet despite playing less than half the defensive snaps, Hamilton claimed freshman All-Americ a recognition and led the Irish with four interceptions. Miller knew Hamilton well after training him since he was in the eighth grade. After working with him during winter break and a few times since last week, Miller's ready for another prediction. "He will be a top five draft pick when he comes out," said Miller, the founder of The Rack Performance Athletic Center in Atlanta.Hamilton's work under Miller intensified once his high school basketball career concluded last March. His progress befor e arriving in South Bend shows what could be accomplished by the Notre Dame trio in the coming weeks. On March 11, 2019, Hamilton recorded a 33-inch vertical, 117-inch broad jump and a laser-timed 1.76-second 10-yard dash. Three months later, he boosted those numbers to 40 inches, 122 inches and 1.66 seconds, respectively. "If you get incrementally better," Miller said, "you take that as a win. He got leaps above better." At 6-foot-3, 190 pounds this time last year, Hamilton hoped to add weight while ma intaining his explosiveness. He joined the Irish at 200 pounds before making additional gains in height and weight. Now at 6-4, 215, Hamilton's looking to top out at 220 pounds. - South Bend Tribune
