Jack Campbell came back and won the Butkus Award as the nation's top linebacker and was the Big Ten Conference's defensive player of the year. Campbell has the potential to climb into the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft but is seen as a Day 2 pick at the latest. Yet he is choosing to play in Saturday's Music City Bowl against Kentucky rather than join the growing trend in college football for top prospects to opt out of bowl games. - Iowa City Press-Citizen

2022 BUTKUS AWARD WINNER: Jack Campbell, Iowa,...University of Iowa senior linebacker Jack Campbell has been named the recipient of the 2022 Butkus Award as the nation's top linebacker. The announced was made Thursday by the Butkus Foundation. On Tuesday Campbell was presented the William V. Campbell Trophy by the National Football Foundation. He was previously named the Nagurski-Wooden Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and the Butkus-Fitzgerald Big Ten Linebacker of the Year and he earned first-team All-Big Ten honors for the second consecutive season. He was named a semifinalist for the Bednarik and Rotary Lombardi awards.

Campbell was also the Butkus Award national Player of the Month in November as the Hawkeyes posted a 3-1 record with wins at Purdue and Minnesota and a home victory over Wisconsin. In the four games, Campbell totaled 36 tackles, including 20 solo tackles and 16 assists. He had a forced fumble and pass interception in the final five minutes of the win at Minnesota, which led to Iowa's game-winning field goal with 28 seconds remaining. Campbell is the first Hawkeye to earn the Butkus Award. Former Hawkeye linebacker Josey Jewell was a semifinalist for the award in both 2016 and 2017, while Chad Greenway was a semifinalist in 2005. Larry Station placed second in the Butkus Award balloting in 1985. - Iowa Football

Drew Stevens made a 21-yard field goal with 28 seconds left to lift Iowa over Minnesota for a 13-10 victory on Saturday, after the Hawkeyes forced two late turnovers to take control of the Big Ten West with their eighth straight win over the Gophers for the Floyd of Rosedale trophy. Jack Campbell caused a fumble and came up with an interception off a tipped pass to thwart Minnesota drives in the closing minutes for Iowa (7-4, 5-3), which would repeat as division champions and return to the conference title game by beating Nebraska next week. Iowa got a break before the game when No. 3 Michigan came back to beat Illinois and push the Illini out of first place. Purdue stayed tied at the top, but the Hawkeyes own the tiebreaker after beating the Boilermakers two weeks ago.

Mohamed Ibrahim trampled a dominant Hawkeyes defense by rushing for a career-high 263 yards and a touchdown on 39 carries, but the sixth-year star lost just his second fumble of the season with 5:07 remaining on a third-and-4 run that would've given the Gophers a first down at the 9. Campbell knocked the ball out, and Deontae Craig recovered it. Minnesota (7-4, 4-4) forced a three-and-out and took over at its 45 with 4:11 to go, when Ibrahim ripped a 19-yard run off the right side to put the Gophers right back in scoring range. But on third-and-7 from the 33, Athan Kaliakmanis - making his third career start - threw a slant to fellow redshirt freshman La'Meke Brockington that Riley Moss reached to deflect. Campbell snagged it in the air, returned it 30 yards and almost scored - but his right foot was ruled out at the 45. Spencer Petras, who scored on a first-quarter quarterback sneak and went 15 for 24 for 221 yards, hit Luke Lachey for 33 yards on the next play. That put the Hawkeyes well within range for their freshman kicker, who made a 38-yarder in the first quarter. Matthew Trickett hit a 27-yard field goal in the third quarter for Minnesota, but he pulled a 34-yard try wide right with 38 seconds left before halftime. - Iowa/AP College Football

TRACKING TOP DRAFT PROSPECTS - WEEK 2: 29. Jack Campbell, rJr, ILB, Iowa, 6-4, 246, 1,...Campbell won the weekly Lott Impact Award as he led the Hawkeyes with five tackles, seven assists and a safety as SDS was held to a mere 120 total yards (87 passing, 33 rushing). But Iowa fans were more focused on their own team's anemic offense, with 166 total yards including only 109 passing. They booed lustily. Campbell hit back in his post-game interview: "I hate to break it to you guys, but they're more than football players. They're brothers, sons, grandsons and I feel a lot of people lose sight of that. I just view them as a person, as a relationship, as a friend...No matter what, I'm always going to have their backs." Mmm. Sounds like Lott himself.

From five finalists for this week's Lott Impact Award our vote went to Iowa defensive tackle Jack Campbell over Penn State cornerback Joey Porter. Other finalists were LB Nick Herbig (2 sacks), Virginia LB Nick Jackson (14 tackles) and Pitt DT Calijah Kancey. The key is word "Impact." Porter was busy in a 35-31 win over Purdue with six PBUs, eight solo tackles and a fumble recovery. But Boilermaker QB Aidan O'Connell threw for 358 yards and wide receiver Charlie Jones was a Cooper Kupp look-alike with 12 catches, 153 yards and a touchdown.

Campbell made an impact on and off the field in Iowa's 7-3 win over South Dakota State.   Iowa's defense came up with two second-half safeties, and the Hawkeyes opened the season with a 7-3 win over South Dakota State on Saturday. Neither team could do much offensively. Iowa finished with 166 yards of offense, while South Dakota State had 120. The two teams combined for more punts (21) than first downs (16). The first safety came after Iowa's Tory Taylor had his punt downed at the South Dakota State 1-yard line in the third quarter. One play later, linebacker Jack Campbell grabbed running back Isaiah Davis after he took the handoff and brought him down one yard short of getting out of the end zone.

The second safety came in the fourth, when Iowa's Joe Evans sacked quarterback Mark Gronowski in the end zone on a second-and-11 play. Iowa took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter on Aaron Blom's 46-yard field goal. The only points for South Dakota State came on Hunter Dustman's 44-yard field goal with 20 seconds left before halftime. Iowa quarterback Spencer Petras completed 11 of 25 passes for 109 yards. Leshon Williams had 72 rushing yards. Gronowski was 10 of 26 passing for 87 yards. Davis had 18 carries for 50 yards. - Iowa/AP College Football

One week after Iowa football was unranked in the USA Today Preseason Coaches Poll, they are also unranked in the Associated Press preseason poll. This is the first time in four seasons that the Hawkeyes won't appear in the AP's preseason Top 25. Dating back to 2020, Iowa had been ranked in 21 consecutive weeks of the AP poll (last five of 2020, all 16 last season and finished No. 23 last season). Within the Big Ten, Iowa was picked to finish second in the Big Ten West behind Wisconsin (which checked in at No. 18) during Big Ten media days. The Hawkeyes return an impressive collection of talent on defense highlighted by preseason All Americans Jack Campbell and Riley Moss.

Last Friday, coach Kirk Ferentz expressed his feelings on preseason polls at the team's media day. "I think you guys know how I feel about preseason polls," Ferentz said. "You talk about a waste of time, with all due respect. The bottom line is what's really important is where you are in January. That's still all that counts. Those polls really don't start, I don't think getting it right until probably November, somewhere in there. But it's all about - like it's a long season, and, yeah, right now it's just about us trying to get ready for South Dakota State. That will be a challenge." - Iowa City Press-Citizen

Jack Campbell is one of the most unique middle linebackers in Iowa history. He's the polar opposite of program greats at that position like Larry Station or Josey Jewell. Those were undersized-yet-tenacious tacklers. Campbell, meanwhile, is a like a thoroughbred racehorse who packs a thumping wallop. His size and speed at Iowa would compare well to what that Chicago Bears once had in Hall of Famer Brian Urlacher. Urlacher's pro measurements were 6-4, 258. Campbell's pushing 250 on his 6-5 frame. Asked if he has lost any speed while bulking up, Campbell chuckled. "Gosh, no," he said. Early in Campbell's Iowa career, it was debated whether he should be a linebacker or defensive end.

Ferentz initially leaned toward defensive end; Wallace and defensive coordinator Phil Parker advocated for linebacker because of how he runs. Put Campbell on the edge, other teams can run away from him. Put Campbell in the middle of Iowa's defense, opponents can't avoid him. "He could get to 270 pounds. But he's like a defensive lineman playing on the second level," Wallace said. "He has a unique ability to move in space for a guy that size. He's not the guy that Northwestern had a couple years ago (Paddy Fisher). They're comparable size-wise, but Jack's athleticism is through the roof when it comes to guys his size." - Iowa City Press-Citizen

For the second consecutive year, Iowa football is picked to finish second in the Big Ten West behind Wisconsin, according to a poll of 36 writers who cover the conference. Iowa, the defending division champion, received three first-place votes but was predicted to finish runner-up in the West to Wisconsin, which received 31 votes in the annual Cleveland.com poll that was released Monday morning. Minnesota finished in third place with two first-place votes. Ohio State was the unanimous selection for East Division and Big Ten champion. Iowa has won the division two times (2015, 2021) since implementation in 2011, with four runner-up finishes coming in 2013, 2016, 2018 and 2020. - Iowa City Press-Citizen

Next week, all 14 Big Ten schools will migrate to Indianapolis, Indiana for Big Ten football media days. On Monday, Iowa announced which three players will represent them. Coach Kirk Ferentz selected a trio of seniors: linebacker Jack Campbell, tight end Sam LaPorta and defensive back Kaevon Merriweather. Big Ten media days will take place from July 26-27 with Iowa addressing the media on the first day. They're joined by Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Northwestern. Day two will feature Illinois, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, Rutgers, and Wisconsin. Campbell highlights the defensive selections as Iowa's 2021 team captain and leading tackler. Last season, he recorded 140 tackles while adding 3.5 sacks and two interceptions. - Iowa City Press-Citizen

The University of Iowa's official NIL collective will launch next week. In a university release issued Thursday afternoon, it was revealed that the "Iowa Swarm Collective" will hold an introductory news conference at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Marriott hotel across from Kinnick Stadium. Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz and men's and women's basketball coaches Fran McCaffery and Lisa Bluder will take part in the news conference, signaling the collective will serve all three of those sports.

The collective will be led by Brad Heinrichs, a four-year letterman in golf and a 1997 graduate of Iowa who runs an actuary firm in Fort Myers, Florida. Heinrichs, other Iowa Swarm Collective executives, and executives from United Way of Johnson and Washington Counties will be present on Tuesday as well. "As a former student-athlete at the University of Iowa, I am excited to form The Swarm Collective - a non-profit corporation that contracts with Iowa's student athletes to serve the community," Heinrichs said via press release. "NIL is a wonderful tool for student-athletes to be able to profit from their name, image and likeness. Our objective is to use their popularity for the benefit of the Iowa community by raising money or providing services to local charities and other non-profit organizations." Last week, another group called the Iowa City NIL Club announced a partnership exclusively with Iowa football. That group is offering membership to fans for $199 that includes exclusive digital and in-person events with players and other perks throughout the year. It's set to officially launch Friday. - Iowa City Press-Citizen

Program veterans like linebacker Jack Campbell called the summer period "vital." It allows older players to clean up their technique and younger players to learn some basics entering fall camp. Not taking advantage of this time can set a player back, a lesson Campbell learned as a younger player and is passing on now as a senior leader. "If you don't have the right mindset or attitude it's gonna fly by and you're not gonna be able to progress," Campbell said. "The guys right now, we meet every day pretty much except Fridays and I just try to emphasize that (fall camp) is going to come up fast. It's a marathon, not a sprint, but at the same time, you got to just do your best every single day."

Campbell also added that the down time allows more opportunities for bonding outside of the facility. "This is a time where you can you can really build bonds," Campbell said. "You get done with workouts and meetings times and we have a little bit of free time. You got to get to your position group, the guys on the unit but also guys on the other side of the ball. I feel like right now it's an important time to just build relationships. A team culture is all built on relationships, and that's something that (head coach Kirk Ferentz) has let us know." Campbell's linebacker position was one of the groups hardest hit by injuries in spring, as well as defensive back, wide receiver and both lines of scrimmage. Mounting injuries affected how much progress the team could make during spring and while it allowed for other players to gain valuable reps, having the full depth return will help speed up development. - Iowa City Press-Citizen

Iowa linebacker Jack Campbell isn't taking anything for granted during summer conditioning. The All-Big Ten Conference selection missed all of spring practice due to a knee injury but returned as a full participant in June. He did all he could to contribute off the field, and now he's making up for lost time on the field. "I wish I could have worked every single day in (the linebacker) room," Campbell said. "Due to the fact that I was just trying to get some things fixed up, that wasn't an option. But for me, personally, I can't take a day for granted. I just worked my butt off in the film room and also just talking to other linebackers about football stuff. But ultimately, I'm here now. I feel great so I'm ready to go."

Campbell passed on the 2022 NFL Draft to return to Iowa for his senior season. The Hawkeyes linebacker corps is the only position group on the team to return every starter from last season. Campbell is joined by fellow All-Big Ten selection and senior Seth Benson as well as junior Jestin Jacobs, whose athleticism could make him an intriguing 2023 draft prospect. What are the expectations for this group? Campbell, who is racking up preseason All-American honors, has challenged the room to be second to none in 2022. "I feel like obviously our next step is we want to be the best," Campbell said. "The best unit to step foot on the field every single day, day in and day out. It all starts with a mindset and if everyone in the room doesn't carry that mindset, we're not going to be that. I feel like we have a really good great group of veterans and young guys that do carry that mindset. And that's something that I'm excited to see develop throughout this summer (and) fall camp (and) into the season." - Iowa City Press-Citizen

Wearing a T-shirt and shorts instead of a uniform and pads, Iowa linebacker Jack Campbell paced the field during the Hawkeyes' open practice in April. It's the way he was dressed the whole spring, when he was held out of practices as he rested and rehabilitated nagging injuries from a season in which he led the nation with 143 tackles. "It was tough, obviously - every competitor is going to want to be out there," Campbell said this week. "I wish I could have worked every single day in the spring. But just due to the fact that I was trying to get things healed up and fixed up, that wasn't an option. For me, personally, you can't take a day for granted."

Campbell, a senior, is back on the field for summer workouts, and he's trying to convey that attitude to teammates. "When I was a freshman, I didn't know what to expect," Campbell said. "I learned really quickly that the summer goes by pretty fast, and then you're in fall camp." An Associated Press All-Big Ten second-team selection last season, Campbell is healthy and expected to once again play a major role for an Iowa defense that ranked as one of the best. The Hawkeyes led the nation with 25 interceptions and ranked third in turnovers forced with 30. They allowed 19.2 points per game. Campbell was the anchor at middle linebacker. "If you're the linebacker at Iowa, you've got to know all of the calls," defensive end John Waggoner said. "He's on top of that, barking out calls, and seeing things before other people do. He's a great leader and an example for how the younger guys should act." - AP College Football

Iowa's Jack Campbell the type of fundamental linebacker prospect that always seems to be around the football. From a productivity standpoint, there are few that do it better than the Hawkeyes star. In 2021, he had an eye-popping 143 total tackles with eight pass deflections and two interceptions. Given the fact that was his first year as a consistent starter, he could put up comparable numbers in 2022 and become a can't miss prospect. Beyond the stat sheet, he has prototypical middle linebacker size at 6-foot-5, 245 pounds and above average coverage skills, to boot. - Hawk Central

Charlie Jones had a 100-yard kickoff return for No. 18 Iowa's first touchdown and the Hawkeyes went on to beat Illinois 33-23 on Saturday. Iowa (9-2, 6-2 Big Ten) was trailing 10-0 in the first quarter when Jones took the kick near the right corner of the end zone and ran through a hole on the left side for the score. Iowa wide receiver Arland Bruce IV had a 2-yard run for a touchdown and Caleb Shudak kicked four field goals, including a 51-yarder in the second quarter. Linebacker Jack Campbell's 32-yard interception return for a touchdown with 1:36 to play closed the Hawkeyes' scoring. Illinois' Brandon Peters threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to tight end Luke Ford to end a 12-play, 75-yard drive that took 6:23 to start the game. But the Illini (4-7, 3-5) had just 9 yards on 10 plays in their next three possessions. James McCourt had three field goals for the Illini.

Tyler Goodson ran for 132 yards for the Hawkeyes, his third 100-yard game of the season. Alex Padilla, making his second start, was just 6 of 17 for 83 yards. Peters, who threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Williams in the closing seconds, was 16 of 36 for 248 yards. Illinois' Chase Brown, who was averaging 106.4 rushing yards per game, was held to 42 yards on 13 carries. Iowa extended its winning streak against the Illini to eight games. The Hawkeyes have won 13 of the last 14 in the series. Illinois was playing without head coach Bret Bielema, who tested positive for COVID-19 earlier in the week. Assistant head coach George McDonald was the interim head coach. - Illinois/AP College Football

The most anticipated game in Iowa history ended with a loss to rival Iowa State. Jack Campbell returned a fumble 6 yards for a touchdown and No. 10 Iowa ran its winning streak against No. 9 Iowa State to six games with a 27-17 victory. In the first Cy-Hawk Trophy game matching ranked teams in 65 total meetings, the Hawkeyes were not about to play the foil for Iowa State's feel-good story. Iowa turned four takeaways into 20 points, ran its overall winning streak to eight games and its winning streak against ranked teams to five. Iowa has not won that many in a row against ranked opponents since 1960. The Hawkeyes used a familiar formula as last week when they had two defensive touchdowns in a rout of Indiana, another upstart program looking to build off 2020's success. Maybe the Cyclones will have better luck in the Big 12 because the Hawkeyes from the Big Ten are heartbreakers. - AP College Football

Statistically, Iowa's defense has been among the nation's best over the past decade. Since 2010, the Hawkeyes have finished in the top 25 in total defense eight times, including three top-10 finishes. In 2020, they finished sixth in country, surrendering only 16 points and 313 yards per game. No question it's a collaborative effort. But ask veteran Jack Campbell and he'll tell you that a lot it starts in the middle at linebacker. "All three (linebacker) positions are vitally important to the defense," Campbell said. "I feel like the Hawkeye defense at the core is all going to start with that linebacker room. I'm excited to see what we do in these final weeks of July and into the season." Campbell, a preseason All-Big Ten selection, is entering his second season starting at weakside linebacker. His emergence last season with a full offseason this year is one big reason why the linebacker core is expected to perform at a high level. - Iowa City Press-Citizen

This year, there isn't anything hold Campbell back. He entered the offseason with a clean bill of health, successfully completed spring practice and summer workouts. Now, he figures to play a starring role on Iowa's defense as starting weakside linebacker. He, and the other Iowa linebackers focused on increasing position versatility during the off-season. "That was a big thing during spring ball," Campbell said. "Being able to move guys around is so beneficial. I'm just continuing to learn and develop myself at other positions so I can bounce around." Campbell has fully embraced the developmental process at Iowa. When he arrived as a freshman in 2019, he weighed about 208 pounds. Today, he's around 245 pounds. "It's hard to not get stronger when you come here," Campbell said. "I've seen that in all my lifts, my jumps, the way I run has all improved dramatically. That day-by-day mentality and controlling what you can control and doing things away from the facility that will benefit you."

Wallace likened his size to another position on the defense. "In a lot of ways, Jack Campbell is a defensive lineman at the second level," Wallace said. "With his physicality and his presence." With that said, it's clear the Iowa coaches believe Campbell is a multi-purpose weapon for the defense. "I see myself as a guy that's willing do to anything," Campbell said. "I'd describe as fearless when I'm on the field. Also as a player I've been trying to work on taking mental break on the sideline and kind of reset, then next time go out and really hone in on the smaller details that'll help me in the game." - Iowa City Press-Citizen

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Iowa linebackers coach Seth Wallace said there's separation between his starting trio of Jack Campbell, Seth Benson and Jestin Jacobs and the rest of his 12-man linebacker group. Of those 12, only Campbell and Benson have more than 100 game reps on defense. So, without a great deal of depth, Wallace is looking to foster as much positional flexibility with Campbell, Benson and Jacobs as possible. How? Wallace said that, during certain parts of practice, he'll make his three linebackers rotate positions after each play so they can develop more versatile skills and see the field from different perspectives. His goal is to create three linebackers who can all adjust their game, depending on the opponent's scheme.

Campbell recorded 29 tackles, 3.5 solo tackles for loss and an interception last year. A four-star Cedar Falls product who picked the Hawkeyes over Iowa State in the 2019 class, Campbell has long been seen as a future star on Iowa's defense. He was named to the Register's All-Iowa Elite Team as a junior and senior, which is a rare feat. Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz has previously described Campbell as the type of player with an "extra heartbeat," something he also said about Josey Jewell. "There's something extra there," Wallace said. "You just turn on the tape and watch the way that he practices. It's clear that there is a motor, there's a little bit of something tugging at his heart to get to the ball. We're anxious to get him back out there hopefully in a normal year and get back at it and see what he can do." - Iowa City Press-Citizen
