2022 WAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Xavier Gipson, Sr., WR, Stephen F. Austin,...Gipson, a senior wide receiver, was the first repeat winner of the offensive player of the year award in the WAC since Boise State's Kellen Moore in 2009-10. Gipson becam e just the eighth player in league history to win top offensive player honors back-to-back, joining BYU's Virgil Carter (1965-66), Jim McMahon (1980-81), Steve Young (1982-83) and Ty Detmer (1990-91), TCU's LaDainian Tomlinson (1999-00), Hawai'i's Colt B rennan (2006-07) and Moore. Gipson led the WAC with 1,486 all-purpose yards, which included a conference-high 276 punt return yards and added 1,163 receiving yards to rank second in the league. Austin (Oct. 31),...Gipson, a senior wide receiver and punt returner, enjoyed another impact game for SFA in a hard-luck defeat at the hands of Utah Tech on Oct. 29. Gipson re gistered 270 all-purpose yards on 11 total touches, which included 119 yards on three punt returns. Stephen F. Austin received all four possible first place votes in the preseason coaches poll and are the favorites to win the 2022 Western Athletic Conference regular season title. Lumberjacks wide receiver Xavier Gipson is the WAC Preseason Offensive Pl ayer of the Year and kicker Chris Campos is the WAC Preseason Special Teams Player of the Year. In addition to being on the Preseason All-WAC team as a wide receiver, Gipson is also picked as a returner. The league's six head coaches, selected the teams and could not vote for their own team or players. SFA leads the way with 14 preseason honorees.Gipson, running back Miles Reed, offensive lineman Clint Lapic, defensive lineman B.J. Thompson, linebacker Brevin Randle and defensive back Jeremiah Wa lker were all unanimous selections. Defending conference champion Sam Houston placed eight players on the preseason team. Bearkats defensive lineman Markel Perry is the WAC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. SHSU is not eligible for this year's WAC title as they are transitioning to the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). The WAC is part of the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). - WAC Football

Xavier Gipson caught two touchdown passes and scored on a punt return to lead Stephen F. Austin to a 31-12 victory over Division-II member Angelo State on Saturday night. Gipson finished with five receptions for 177 yards. His 37-yard punt return for a t ouchdown helped the Lumberjacks build a 14-10 halftime lead. Trae Self was 11 of 27 for 197 yards passing, and threw touchdown passes of 90 and 76 yards to Gipson. Da'Leon Ward had a 9-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter for the Lumberjacks (2 -3). Zach Bronkhorst threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Cason Brown for Angelo State. Alfred Grear scored on a 38-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter. - AP College Football

Josh McGowen ran 158 yards and a score on 22 carries, Xavier Gipson had seven receptions for 98 yards and a touchdown, and Stephen F. Austin beat Northwestern State 32-20 in the season finale for both teams on Thursday night. Thomas Hutchings added 75 ya rds rushing, including a 7-yard TD, for Stephen F. Austin. Storm Ruiz made a career-long 54-yard field goal midway through the first quarter and three plays later Gary Sampson recovered a fumble at the Northwestern State 13 to set up Hutchings' touchdown run before Ruiz added a 41-yarder to make it 13-0 going into the second quarter.McGowen scored on a 20-yard run and, on the first play from scrimmage after the Lumberjacks (2-9, 2-6 Southland Conference) recovered an onside kick, Trae Self hit Gi pson in stride for a 55-yard TD to make it 27-0 with 10:39 left in the first half. Shelton Eppler threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Kendrick Price to cut Northwestern State's deficit to 27-7 at halftime but Gary Sampson strip-sacked Eppler for a safety a nd then Ruiz kicked a 44-yard field goal to make it 32-7 with 8:48 left in the third quarter. Xavier Gipson caught four passes for 132 yards and scored the go-ahead touchdown to help Stephen F. Austin beat Incarnate Word 31-24 on Saturday night. Cam Arnold connected with Gipson in stride on a go route for a 70-yard TD pass that made it 28-21 for the Lumberjacks (2-8, 2-5 Southland) with 13:26 left in the fourth quarter. Storm Ruiz kicked a 38-yard field goal to extend the lead to 31-21. Carson Mohr answered with a 32-yard field goal for the Cardinals (5-5, 4-4) with 5:19 left in the game. Stephe n F. Austin took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter after Thomas Hutchings scored on a 2-yard run and Arnold took a 20-yard keeper into the end zone.
