The least-enviable time slot for a head coach at SEC media days each year is the one after Nick Saban. Reporters are digesting what Saban and his Alabama contingent just said with headphones in their ears and little attention paid to whomever is standing at the podium. For the last last two years -- and it is hardly a coincidence -- the role of following up Saban has fallen upon Vanderbilt coach Clark Lea. The second-year Commodores coach -- who played baseball at Birmingham-Southern for a season in 2001 -- might also have the toughest on-field task in the SEC.

His out-gunned program -- formerly led by Derek Mason -- has lost its past 21 conference games, not having won in its league since beating Missouri in October 2019. But Lea, hired last year after serving as Notre Dame's defensive coordinator, has high hopes. "We know in time Vanderbilt football will be the best program in the country," Lea said Tuesday. What defines "best program" is a matter of debate, and in this case, Lea pointed toward developing professional players as one aspect of that. "We are on a quest to be the best developmental program in the country," he said. "We want to set a course for our men to realize successful careers in the NFL." - Birmingham News
