Chris Reynolds matched a career best with five touchdown passes and Charlotte, after firing its previous head coach six days ago, cruised to a 56-23 victory over Rice on Saturday to snap a four-game losing streak.   Charlotte fired coach Will Healy on Sunday after the 49ers fell to 1-7 in their final season as a member of Conference USA. "We are grateful to Will Healy for the incredible energy and enthusiasm he brought to our program," said Charlotte 49ers athletic director Mike Hill. "He made an impact here that will never be forgotten. Sadly, however, our on-field results have not met expectations. Will and his family are special people and we wish them the best." Healy, one of the youngest head coaches in major college football at 37, fell to 15-24 in four seasons at Charlotte after losing 34-15 to Florida International on Saturday. That dropped the 49ers into last place in C-USA.

Offensive line coach Pete Rossomando was elevated to interim head coach. Rossomando is in his second season with the 49ers. He has previous head coaching experience at New Haven and Central Connecticut State and was named the NCAA Div. II National Coach of the Year following the 2012 season at New Haven. He was a finalist for the Eddie Robinson FCS Coach of the Year Award in 2017 while at Central Connecticut State. Charlotte is set to make a jump up in competition next season when it joins the American Athletic Conference along with five other C-USA schools. Healy was the youngest head coach in FBS when he was hired by Charlotte in 2019 after three years at Austin Peay that included an FCS playoff appearance in 2017. He led Charlotte to a bowl game in his first season, finishing 7-6. The 49ers are 8-18 since. Healy is the sixth major college coach fired this season, but first outside the Power Five conferences. The 49ers are at Rice on Saturday. - AP College Football

After missing the previous two games with an upper-body injury, Reynolds totaled 401 yards and five touchdowns in the win, including the game-winning touchdown to Grant DuBose with 17 seconds to play to put Charlotte in the win column. - Charlotte Observer

Chris Reynolds and Elijah Spencer connected late in regulation to tie it and again in overtime for the win and Charlotte rallied late to beat Rice 31-24 on Saturday. Ari Broussard's scoring run from the 2 with 6:35 left ended a 16-play, 84-yard drive that lasted 9 1/2 minutes and Rice led 24-14. Jonathan Cruz kicked a 32-yard field goal to reduce Charlotte's (5-4, 3-2 Conference USA) deficit to a touchdown. The 49ers' defense forced a punt in a 1:40 possession for Rice, then Reynolds led a five-play, 80-yard drive in 75 seconds that ended with his 8-yard scoring pass to Spencer to knot it with 1:14 left and force the extra session. The duo then connected on the first play of overtime when Spencer ran a slant and broke a tackle in the middle of the field for a 25-yard score. Linebacker Luke Martin sealed the win with an interception of Jake Constantine who was under heavy pressure. Broussard ran for 186 yards on 20 carries and scored twice and Jake Bailey had seven receptions for 143 receiving yards for the Owls (3-6, 2-3). - AP College Football

Chris Reynolds passed for 203 yards and four touchdowns, Shadrick Byrd had two long kickoff returns that led to points and Charlotte defeated Florida International 45-33 on Friday night. An interception returned 39 yards for a touchdown by Jon Alexander with 5:45 left in the game sealed the win for Charlotte, although FIU scored again on a one-play, 75-yard drive in 10 seconds and then appeared to recover an onside kick before losing it to an illegal touch penalty. The 49ers (4-2, 2-0 Conference USA) earned their first road win this season and are off to a 2-0 conference start for the first time. Charlotte has its best start to any season at the FBS level.

Charlotte opened the second half with a crisp, three-minute drive ending with a 22-yard scoring pass down the seam from Reynolds to Victor Tucker, extending their lead to 24-6. Reynolds was 4-for-4 passing on the drive, the TD catch was Tucker's 13th. FIU (1-5, 0-2) responded in two plays, cutting the gap to 24-13 after a 25-yard run up the middle by D'vonte Price and a 50-yard scoring heave from Max Bortenschlager to Kris Mitchell, who caught the ball in stride at about the 6. Price, who finished with 89 yards rushing, became the sixth FIU player to gain more than 2,000 career rushing yards. - Charlotte/AP College Football

Chris Reynolds punched the ball four straight times up the middle to score the insurance touchdown with a leap over the pile from the 1-yard line late in the fourth quarter and Charlotte fended off Middle Tennessee 42-39 in a Conference USA slugfest Friday night. The touchdown with four minutes left, on top of four passing touchdowns, made for a career scoring night for Reynolds, who passed for 339 yards. Grant DuBose caught 9 passes for 114 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Calvin Camp broke off a 44-yard scoring run to end the third quarter and racked up 101 yards rushing on 12 carries.

Chase Cunningham threw for 379 yards and five touchdowns to five different receivers for the Blue Raiders (1-3, 0-2) in his first career start. The junior had entered with five career scoring passes and a 150-yard single-game best effort. After four lead changes through the second and third quarters, Charlotte wrapped two touchdowns around a Middle Tennessee three-and-out to grab a 35-24 lead with 10:27 remaining, breaking the pattern of the two teams trading scores. The scoring drives on consecutive possessions, plus Reynolds' winner from the 1, swung momentum to the 49ers (3-1, 1-0). Reed Blankenship was credited with 13 tackles, six solo, to become the all-time leading tackler for Middle Tennessee with 348 career tackles. He entered the game needing 10 to claim the 35-year old mark from Roosevelt Colvard (344, 1983-86). - Charlotte/AP College Football

Chris Reynolds scored two touchdowns and became Charlotte's career passing leader in a 38-10 victory over Gardner-Webb on Saturday night. Reynolds was 10-of-17 passing for just 103 yards and two interceptions but he still finished the night with 5,469 career passing yards, eclipsing Matt Johnson (2013-16), who finished with 5,405. Charlotte did most of its damage on the ground with 306 yards and rushing touchdowns by four 49ers.

Reynolds scored on a 37-yard run early on and Charlotte never trailed. Short TD runs by Shadrick Byrd and Calvin Camp plus Reynolds' 11-yard TD pass to Jairus Mack made it 28-10 at halftime. ChaVon McEachern added a 13-yard score and Jonathan Cruz a field goal to complete Charlotte's scoring. The 49ers are 2-0 to start a season for the first time since 2015, having beaten Duke 31-28 last week for their first program victory over a Power 5 opponent. Narii Gaither rushed for 82 yards and a touchdown for the Bulldogs. - Charlotte/AP College Football

SEPT 6 CONFERENCE USA OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Charlotte QB Chris Reynolds led the 49ers' dramatic first-ever win over a power five opponent, 31-28, against Duke. On Charlotte's final two drives of the seesaw battle, Reynolds was 9-of-10 for 161 yards and threw for two touchdowns in the final three minutes to secure the historic win. The game-winner came on an 11-yard touchdown pass to Shadrick Byrd with 33 seconds remaining. Reynolds notched his school-record fourth career 300-yard passing game (324 yards) and figured in all four of the 49ers touchdowns by passing for three and running for a fourth.   Charlotte 49ers coach Will Healy propped his son Eli up on his lap at his postgame news conference and tried to hold back tears as he took in the magnitude of the moment. The 49ers football program had just taken a huge step forward - and he knew it. Chris Reynolds threw for 324 yards with three touchdowns, including an 11-yard scoring strike to Shadrick Byrd with 33 seconds left and Charlotte knocked off Duke 31-28 on Friday night for the school's first ever win against a Power Five team. "I get the emotional side from my dad," Healy said. "He cries about everything and I think I'm becoming like that." There were times Healy wondered if he and his staff were headed in the right direction, and having nine games from their original schedule in 2020 cancelled or postponed due to Covid didn't help matters. The team wound up only playing six games last season - often scrambling to find an opponent to play - and won two of them in what amounted to a lost season. - Charlotte/AP College Football

When No. 12 North Carolina faces Chartlotte on Saturday, the 49ers will be without their starting quarterback. Chris Reynolds is out with an "upper body" injury that he suffered against Appalachian State on Sept. 12, according to Charlotte coach Will Healy. Transfer Dom Shoffner, who started his career at N.C. Central, will start in Reynolds' place against the Tar Heels. Reynolds completed 11 of 30 passes for 140 yards and two interceptions and rushed for 34 yards in the loss against the Mountaineers. Healy said Reynolds is out indefinitely and was injured on the first play of the game. Healy threw an incomplete pass to Micaleous Elder on the play, but was hurried by the Mountaineers' Nick Hampton. Reynolds kept the ball on the next two plays, including a fumble on third down that he recovered. He would play the entire game. "Chris tried to fight through it," Healy said "He's as tough as nails." Healy did not elaborate on what Reynolds' injury is. - Raleigh News Observer

With Charlotte's special teams proving to be a liability and Mountaineers quarterback Zac Thomas having an error-free day of his own, it was left to Reynolds - who hadn't even won the 49ers' starting job during the preseason - to keep his team in the game. He did just that, throwing for 296 yards and four touchdowns and running for 35 more. (He actually rushed for 76 yards, including one run of 35 yards, but was sacked four times.) "He's a competitor who plays with grit and there's no play that's done with him," said first-year Mountaineers coach Shawn Clark, who was App State's offensive line coach last season. "Some quarterbacks can't scramble and keep a play going, but he's a guy who does a great job of extending plays. That's the kind of quarterback you want in your program."

Now a junior, Reynolds' story is well-known around local college football circles. At 5-foot-11, he didn't receive a Division I offer coming out of Davie County High (Division II Catawba was the only school to offer him a scholarship). He walked on for former coach Brad Lambert at Charlotte and, after redshirting, won the starting job in 2018. An ankle injury in October forced him to miss the rest of the season. "He's a playmaker," said App State senior defensive lineman Elijah Diarrassouba. "He's got a knack for making plays." - Charlotte Observer

Chris Reynolds, the starting quarterback for the Charlotte 49ers, accounted for 3,355 passing and rushing yards and 28 touchdowns in 2019, but he hasn't forgotten what it was like to be un-recruited even after an ungodly high school career at Davie. He hasn't forgotten going to Charlotte practices as a walk-on, the No. 5 quarterback, and not getting a single rep. He hasn't forgotten the devastating ankle injury in 2018 that forced him to start from scratch and prove himself all over again. He hasn't forgotten how many transfers were brought in to replace him.

Now a junior, Reynolds is the unquestioned offensive catalyst of the 49ers, who are coming off their first winning season (7-6) and their first bowl experience. But when you're 5-foot-10 and you're playing the position Reynolds plays and playing against the caliber of athletes he's playing against, you never take a single step of the journey for granted. "The chip on the shoulder never leaves," Reynolds said. "The chip can't leave. There are times when I reflect on the athletic road I've traveled, the challenges I've faced, all the adversity that put me on the path that I'm on now. I have gone from walk-on to starter, and I'm very grateful to be in the position that I'm in today, but my mindset is that I still have to earn a job every single day. I still have to compete every day like it's my last day." - Charlotte Observer

OCT 28/WEEK 9 CONFERENCE USA OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Charlotte sophomore QB Chris Reynolds set a new Charlotte school record for total offense, threw for the program's most yards against an FBS opponent, had three touchdown passes of over 30 yards, ran for a 29-yard score and engineered a dramatic fourth-quarter comeback in the 49ers' 39-38 victory over North Texas. His 34-yard TD pass to Victor Tucker in the end zone with 18 seconds capped a comeback that saw Charlotte rally from a 14-point fourth quarter deficit. Reynolds finished the day with a school-record 432 yards of total offense with career-bests of 336 passing and 96 rushing.

His career-high 336 passing yards are the most by a 49er against an FBS opponent. The Mocksville, North Carolina, native is just the second Charlotte player to pass for over 300 yards in a game. His 52-yard TD pass to Tyler Ringwood to start the second half is the 49ers longest of the season. Trailing 35-21 in the 4th quarter, Reynolds engineered three fourth-quarter TD drives and threw TD passes of 31 and 34 yards, including the game-winner in the final 20 seconds. - Conference USA Football
