The University of Cincinnati football team is moving on from three key defensive linemen after their College Football Playoff appearance following the 2021 season. Defensive end Myjai Sanders was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals. Defensive tackle Curtis Brooks went to the Indianapolis Colts, and defensive tackle Marcus Brown graduated. For head coach Luke Fickell and defensive coordinator Mike Tressel, there are plenty of gaps to fill.

With 24 days left before Cincinnati faces SEC foe Arkansas on Sept. 3, the clock is ticking. Luckily, the Bearcats have a solid base of defensive linemen in Jowon Briggs (junior), Malik Vann (graduate), Jabari Taylor (graduate) and Dominique Perry (redshirt sophomore). "All these different dudes who can play some football," junior center Jake Renfro said. "As an offensive lineman, we go against those dudes every day. We're making each other better, fighting for those reps, getting really good work in." Renfro said the mentality, iron sharpens iron, really comes into fruition when facing people like Briggs, who he called one of the strongest guys he's ever seen in his life. - Cincinnati Enquirer

Jowon Briggs, a former four-star recruit out of Walnut Hills High School who entered the NCAA transfer portal earlier this month, is coming home. Briggs, who registered 20 tackles and three sacks last season in his first year for the Virginia Cavaliers, will join head coach Luke Fickell and defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman's defense. The 6-foot-1, 310-pound defensive lineman will join the No. 9 team in FBS total defense, according to NCAA statistics. Briggs made the announcement Wednesday night via his Twitter account. Brigss was the No. 2 prospect in Ohio for the 2018 recruiting class, according to 247Sports. - Cincinnati Enquirer

Talented sophomore nose tackle Jowon Briggs has reached the coda of his Virginia football career, but not his swan song in the sport. The former four-star prospect, who also made a name for himself at UVa off the field with his singing ability, has entered his name into the NCAA's transfer portal, a source said Tuesday. The Cavaliers (3-4, 3-4 ACC) won't have Briggs when they host Abilene Christian on Saturday. He is no longer a member of the program, a source confirmed. The 6-foot-1, 310-pound Ohio native has 20 tackles and three sacks this season. He's started every game this season after starting seven as a true freshman in 2019. - Charlottesville Daily Progress
