Oklahoma's defensive front will be without one of its most dynamic players next season. OU junior defensive end Ronnie Perkins is headed to the NFL, announcing his decision via his Twitter account Saturday afternoon. Perkins ends his OU career with 32.0 tackles for loss and 16.5 sacks over 33 appearances. He was a part of three consecutive Big 12 championships, two College Football Playoff semifinals and a Cotton Bowl Classic victory over Florida. Perkins, along with Rhamondre Stevenson and Trejan Bridges, was suspended for OU's College Football Playoff semifinal clash with LSU, reportedly due to a failed drug test. - Norman Transcript

2020 ALL-BIG 12 CONFERENCE FOOTBALL SECOND TEAM: DL Ronnie Perkins, Oklahoma,...Perkins has accounted for 4.0 sacks, 8.0 tackles for loss (for a total of 43 lost yards) and six QB hurries in his four games this season after missing the first five contests. The junior from St. Louis, Mo., has recorded at least four tackles and 1.5 TFLs in all four of his games. He was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week on Nov. 23 after notching three TFLs and two sacks in OU's 41-13 Nov. 21 win over Oklahoma State. - Oklahoma Football

"I'm just excited to go out there and be on tape again," Perkins said. "Just putting my skill set on tape, no matter if it's pass-rushing or playing the run. No matter what it is I'm just happy to go out there and put some stuff on tape to make myself look better." The "tape" Perkins is trying to build is the video NFL franchises will use to evaluate him as a pro prospect. and his opportunities to craft a compelling portfolio have been limited. Perkins missed OU's first five games because of a suspension stemming from last season. So, the St. Louis, Missouri, native didn't make his 2020 debut until Oct. 31 against Texas Tech but has played in each game since.

Through four outings, Perkins has eight tackles for loss, including four sacks, and six quarterback hurries. Perkins stands to gain plenty with OU playing its 10th regular season game against West Virginia, as well as getting an extra 60 minutes of exposure in the Big 12 championship against Iowa State a week later. Those chances to show off his skill set will be especially important if he declares for the NFL draft in January. They will be even more important if the NFL isn't able to conduct a normal combine, assuming he would be invited, or OU can't host its usual pro day in the spring. - Norman Transcript

Lincoln Riley offered no update on the status of suspended players Trejan Bridges, Rhamondre Stevenson and Ronnie Perkins when asked on the Big 12 teleconference if Riley expected the trio back for Saturday's game at TCU. "That process is still ongoing," the OU football coach said. "It's yet to be determined." That's virtually the same answer Riley has given any time he's been asked about the players since they were suspended before last season's Peach Bowl after failing an NCAA drug test. Sources have said all three tested positive for marijuana.

The NCAA mandates a half-season suspension for a first-time offense. That would keep them out through Saturday's game, returning for the Oct. 31 game at Texas Tech. There was some hope that the NCAA would reduce the suspensions due to the shortened schedule this season, but that seems unlikely. Perkins' situation is more unclear than the other two. Perkins was granted an appeal earlier this month but steps needed to be completed before he could regain eligibility and were not. The defensive end traveled with the Sooners to face Iowa State on Oct. 3 but did not play in the immediate wake of the ruling and then did not travel for the game against Texas. - Daily Oklahoman

Asked of the status of Perkins' ongoing suspension, OU coach Lincoln Riley said it hasn't changed and the defensive end traveled with the team to Ames to provide off-field leadership. "He was there for moral support," Riley said. "Ronnie is an important leader for us. Just his presence there was really positive and I thought he contributed to an excited sideline. Just was really good for some of our young guys there in key positions. His status for Saturday has not changed." Perkins hasn't appeared in any games so far this season, because he reportedly failed a drug test last winter ahead of OU's Peach Bowl trip. Receiver Trejan Bridges and running back Rhamondre Stevenson were also reportedly suspended for the same reason and have not been available through OU's first three games. When any of the suspended players will return is still unclear, according to Riley. "It could change in five minutes, it could change maybe in three more weeks," he said. "I wish I had more answers, but sadly I do not." - Norman Transcript

A few weeks after OU lost its top returning running back to an opt-out decision, the Sooners appear to have lost one of their top returning pass-rushers. Defensive tackle Jalen Redmond finalized a decision to opt out over the weekend, according to a report from OUInsider. While there is a fair amount of depth at Redmond's spot on the interior of the defensive line, the decision leaves the Sooners without a proven pass-rusher early in the season. Though he only started four games a year ago, Redmond led the Sooners with 6.5 sacks and was third on the team with 11 tackles for loss.

Defensive end Ronnie Perkins, who was second on the team with six sacks and 13.5 tackles for loss a year ago, is expected to serve a suspension of at least four games to start the season in a continuation of the suspension that cost Perkins, running back Rhamondre Stevenson and wide receiver Trejan Bridges the opportunity to play in the Peach Bowl against LSU. The trio reportedly tested positive for marijuana in the lead-up to the bowl game, leading to an NCAA-mandated suspension. - Daily Oklahoman

Oklahoma doesn't sound any closer to a resolution in the case of three players suspended by the NCAA in December. Trejan Bridges, Ronnie Perkins and Rhamondre Stevenson - all likely contributors next season - are awaiting answers after OU initiated a process with the NCAA, which suspended the players for reportedly failing a drug test. None of them played in the Peach Bowl. They might have to serve five more games on the sideline if the NCAA doesn't resolve an appeal.

That process is taking more time than usual with the NCAA preoccupied by the coronavirus pandemic. "No update," OU coach Lincoln Riley said Thursday. "I think that's fair to say, that all of this has probably slowed this process down. It's still being discussed. "I don't think it's going to get left unattended to, but I do believe it's fair to say that has slowed it down. There's obviously other priorities that are a lot higher right now for the people that make those decisions." - Norman Transcript
