Trevor Lawrence set many records during his time as Clemson's quarterback. On Thursday, Lawrence achieved another high-water mark for the program as the Jacksonville Jaguars took him with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Lawrence becomes Clemson's first No. 1 overall pick in football. Before Thursday, the highest a Clemson football player ever went in the NFL Draft was No. 4. That mark was shared by Banks McFadden (1940), Gaines Adams (2007), Sammy Watkins (2014) and Clelin Farrell (2019). "There has been so many great players to come through Clemson, so it is obviously special to me," Lawrence said Thursday on being the program's first No. 1 overall pick. "I don't take it lightly. We kind of made history ever since I've been at Clemson, so it is awesome to be a part of that with coach [Dabo] Swinney and all my teammates. "That is the plan moving on to Jacksonville is to do things that haven't been done, continue to lead and do things the right way." - The State

Lawrence will have surgery on his left shoulder in the next couple of days and then will begin the rehab process. He told ESPN what he expects that to be like and when he expects to be full strength. "I think I can throw in six-to-eight weeks after the surgery, start throwing again, and then looking at a four-to-five month full clearance," Lawrence said. "Obviously I'll be able to do stuff before then, but just glad it's non-throwing shoulder. So shouldn't be too bad. Just have to rehab really hard and work hard to get back." - The State

Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence worked out for several NFL personnel including his expected future pro coach, Urban Meyer of the Jacksonville Jaguars. The national championship winner is projected as the No. 1 overall pick in April's NFL draft, the spot held by the Jaguars. Lawrence had planned to throw on Clemson's Pro Day on March 11, but moved up things when he learned he'd need surgery on his left, non-throwing shoulder. Lawrence said doctors have told him he should be able to throw within six to eight weeks of surgery. Along with Meyer, Jacksonville's offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell and passing game coordinator Brian Schottenheimer were in attendance. Others watching Lawrence's session were new Atlanta coach Arthur Smith and New York Jets general manager Joe Douglas. Lawrence threw about 40 passes, moving from short swing patterns to red zone tosses before finishing with several throws between 50 and 60 yards. - AP College Football

Former Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence will have surgery on his left, non-throwing shoulder before the NFL draft. Lawrence's representative, Kyle Strongin of MGC Sports, said Lawrence scheduled a workout for NFL personnel on Friday instead of waiting for Clemson's pro day on March 11 because of the upcoming surgery. Strongin did not specify when the procedure would happen. Lawrence, the 6-foot-6 passer who finished second in Heisman Trophy balloting to Alabama receiver Devonta Smith, is expected to be the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. - AP Sports

Clemson's wait for a Heisman trophy winner continues. Tigers star quarterback Trevor Lawrence finished second in Heisman voting, it was revealed Tuesday night. The award is given annually to the best player in college football. Lawrence is the runner-up behind Alabama senior receiver DeVonta Smith, who had 105 catches for 1,641 yards and 20 touchdowns this season. Lawrence was only the second Clemson player to be named a Heisman finalist. He missed two games in the 2020 regular season but still completed nearly 70% of his passes for 2,753 yards, 22 touchdowns and four interceptions. He had seven rushing scores. Former Tigers QB Deshaun Watson named a Heisman finalist twice, finishing as the runner-up in 2016 and third in 2015. - The State

Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence has made it official - he's heading to the NFL. Lawrence, the 6-foot-6 QB with the power arm and flowing hair, released a video on social media Wednesday announcing he was leaving school and declaring for the NFL draft. "I really feel like I'm a man now and I'm ready to take on those challenges," Lawrence said. "Super excited for life ahead. I'm grateful for Clemson and I'm going to miss it." Lawrence had said in September he planned to play his junior season, graduate in December and move on to the NFL.

However, in October, Lawrence discussed keeping his options open, which included possibly returning for another year of college as discussions of the No. 1 pick intensified between the then winless New York Jets and the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jaguars finished 1-15 and have the top pick in the draft and are expected to take Lawrence. He finished 34-2 in his college career, leading Clemson to three Atlantic Coast Conference titles and the national title after the 2018 season. He finished second in the Heisman Trophy race Tuesday night to Alabama receiver DeVonta Smith. - AP College Football

Trevor Lawrence had 412 yards of offense and three touchdowns, Travis Etienne ran for 124 yards and a score and No. 4 Clemson dominated No. 2 Notre Dame 34-10 on Saturday to win its sixth straight Atlantic Coast Conference championship. Lawrence threw long scoring passes to Amari Rodgers and E.J Williams in the first half to help the Tigers (10-1) avenge a 47-40 double-overtime loss at Norte Dame - with Lawrence sidelined because of the coronavirus - to lock up a spot in the College Football Playoff for the sixth straight season.

Lawrence, the game MVP and presumptive No. 1 pick in the NFL draft, overcame an early interception on a tipped ball to complete 25 of 36 passes for 322 yards. He ran 14 times for 90 yards, with a 34-yard touchdown scamper. The junior quarterback did it all, even throwing a block to spring Etienne for a 15-yard gain on a third-down run late in the second quarter leading to a touchdown and a 24-3 halftime lead. - AP College Football

Much was made of Lawrence's running ability last season: The quarterback rushed for 563 yards and nine touchdowns on 103 carries. Lawrence has relied on his legs less this season - he concludes the 10-game regular season with just 44 carries - but on Saturday he reminded he can still make things happen himself when necessary. He turned a couple of run-pass options into rushing scores, a 17-yarder and a 7-yarder, that made a difference in a game in which Lawrence completed just 12 of 22 passes and threw an interception. - Charleston Post Courier

Trevor Lawrence had two touchdown runs and threw a scoring pass and No. 4 Clemson beat Virginia Tech 45-10 on Saturday to set up a rematch against No. 2 Notre Dame in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game. The Tigers (9-1, 8-1) ended their regular-season schedule with a chance for a sixth consecutive conference title and revenge against Notre Dame after a 47-40 loss in South Bend on Nov. 7 when Lawrence was sidelined by COVID-19.

Against the Hokies (4-6, 4-5), Lawrence completed 12 of 22 for 195 yards with an interception. He ran for 41 yards. Clemson took a 17-10 lead in the second quarter on Lyn-J Dixon's 19-yard touchdown run, and added 28 more in the second half, with Lawrence scoring on a 7-yard run and throwing a 65-yard touchdown pass to Cornell Powell. Derion Kendrick returned a fumble 66 yards for a touchdown, and the Tigers scored off another turnover. Virginia Tech played three quarterbacks because of injuries, turned the ball over three times and rushed for a season-low 131 yards. - Clemson/AP College Football

Trevor Lawrence threw for 403 yards and two touchdowns in his first game in five weeks - and likely last one at Death Valley - as No. 4 Clemson throttled Pittsburgh 52-17 on Saturday. Lawrence hadn't seen the field on game day since beating Syracuse on Oct. 24. He tested positive for the coronavirus the following week and missed Clemson's next two games, including its only loss this season - a 47-40 double OT defeat at No. 2 Notre Dame. A healthy, eager Lawrence expected to play last week, but a positive test from a Clemson offensive lineman on the Friday before the game led to a postponement at Florida State just hours before kickoff.

Lawrence, a 6-foot-6 junior with a powerful arm, deft touch and flowing hair, was as crisp as ever in leading Clemson (8-1, 7-1 Atlantic Coast Conference; No. 3 CFP) a step closer to the league championship game and a likely rematch with the unbeaten Fighting Irish. Cornell Powell had five catches for 176 yards, including a 43-yard TD catch off a flea-flicker pass from Lawrence. Powell also had an incredible, one-handed grab on a 70-yard pass to the Pitt 5 that set up Chez Mellusi's 2-yard TD run for a 38-3 lead. Lawrence opened the scoring with a 5-yard touchdown pass to freshman E.J. Williams less than four minutes in. By the time reserve runner Lyn-J Dixon burst through for a 1-yard touchdown with 5 seconds left in the first quarter, the Tigers led 31-0 - the most points they had ever scored in the opening period. - Clemson/AP College Football

Trevor Lawrence won't be playing against Notre Dame, but he will be on the sideline. Clemson's star quarterback will travel with the team to South Bend for Saturday's Top 5 showdown. Lawrence will have completed the required 10-day isolation period in time to travel with the Tigers, but he will not have passed the cardiac requirements. "He's doing great. He really is," Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said Tuesday. "He's in the meetings. He's Zooming in and all that stuff. So he's doing well. He's just anxious to get out. He's back with us Thursday or Friday, so he'll be with us. He'll travel with us. He just can't play because of the cardiac back-to-play protocol that's in place."

Atlantic Coast Conference rules require players to isolate for at least 10 days from the start of symptoms or a positive test. They must then undergo a cardiac evaluation before beginning a phased return and a re-acclimatization period. There is no set minimum period for the phased return from the ACC. For Clemson athletes, it's typically a minimum of two to three days for the phased return. Having Lawrence at the game will provide another voice of reassurance and another set of eyes to help Tigers freshman quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei. - The State

Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence has tested positive for COVID-19, putting into doubt whether the face of college football will be available to play the top-ranked Tigers' biggest game of the season. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said in a statement released by the school Thursday night that Lawrence is in isolation with mild symptoms. Swinney said Lawrence would miss Clemson's game Saturday against Boston College. The Tigers are scheduled to play No. 4 Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, on Nov. 7. Individuals who test positive for COVID-19 must isolate for a minimum of 10 days. The junior from Georgia is a leading contender for the Heisman Trophy and potentially the top overall pick in next year's NFL draft. He led the Tigers (6-0) to a national championship as a freshman and back to the College Football playoff championship game last season. Clemson's loss to LSU in the title game was the first - and still only - game the Tigers have lost in Lawrence's 32 career starts. - AP College Football

The plan all along has been for Trevor Lawrence to play three years at Clemson before leaving for the NFL, but is it a guarantee that this will be his final year with the Tigers? There has been speculation in recent weeks that Lawrence should not play for the Jets if New York ends up with the No. 1 overall pick for the 2021 NFL Draft. A story from Sports Illustrated suggested that Lawrence should "pull an Eli Manning" and "steer himself away from the Jets." Manning told the Chargers in 2004 that he did not want to play for them, leading to a blockbuster trade that ended with Philip Rivers in San Diego and Manning with the New York Giants.

Former Falcons star Roddy White, speaking in a recent interview, went as far as to say that Lawrence should "just go back to Clemson" if the Jets have the top pick. "If the Jets get the first pick don't go. Just stay. Just stay one more year in college and enjoy your time...because it would be awful to get drafted by the Jets," White said. Lawrence, a junior, was asked Tuesday if there was anything that might make him reconsider returning to school. He didn't close the door on playing one more season at Clemson. "I don't know. I mean, we'll just have to see how things unfold. I think there's a lot of factors in that," Lawrence told reporters. "Honestly (I'm) just playing this year, putting everything I have into it. Not really focusing on next year, whether I leave or stay or whatever. Obviously I have the option to do either one." - The State

Trevor Lawrence threw two touchdown passes and Travis Etienne ran for three scores as No. 1 Clemson shook off a sluggish performance to win their 27th straight Atlantic Coast Conference game and put away pesky Syracuse 47-21 on Saturday. The Tigers opened 6-0 for the sixth straight season, but it took a late burst to get it done - just like usual against Syracuse (1-5, 1-4). The Orange were the last ACC team to defeat the Tigers (5-0 ACC) with a 27-24 victory in 2017. A year later at Death Valley, Syracuse again looked primed for the upset as it held a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter before Clemson's 27-23 escape to keep its national championship season intact.

Despite entering as 45-point underdogs, coach Dino Babers and Syracuse kept the Tigers out of synch much of the game and were down just 27-21 late in the third quarter. But Andrew Booth Jr.'s fumble recovery and touchdown run after Rex Culpepper was sacked late in the third quarter turned the game in Clemson's favor for good. Etienne added rushing TDs of 9 and 1 yard. Lawrence threw for 289 yards with scoring passes of 25 yards to Cornell Powell and 18 yards to Davis Allen. The Tigers broke fast for a 17-0 lead less than 11 minutes into the game. That's when things got away from the five-time defending ACC champion. - Clemson/AP College Football

The Heisman favorite passed for 404 yards and five touchdowns while playing only the first half and then one series in the second. He was 14 of 15 passing for 233 yards, with three touchdowns and no interceptions in the second quarter alone. The Tigers outscored Georgia Tech 35-0 during the period. Lawrence did throw his first interception in 364 calendar days and in 366 pass attempts, but other than the one mistake, which came when he was pressured and threw the ball up for grabs, Lawrence was just about perfect. "He's just having fun. I mean he's enjoying himself. He's really focused on the moment," Swinney said. "He's so focused on his execution and his details, his reads, his footwork, all the little things. Just really proud of him." - The State

Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence was picked off late in the first quarter of Saturday's game at Georgia Tech. The interception was Lawrence's first of the season and his first since Oct. 19, 2019 at Louisville. Lawrence was intercepted by Zamari Walton. The pass was intended for Cornell Powell but Lawrence faced pressure and threw it up for grabs. (Georgia Tech turned the ball over on downs a few plays later.) - The State

Clemson easily held off Alabama on Sunday to retain the No. 1 spot in The Associated Press college football poll, extending its longest run atop the poll to seven weeks. The Crimson Tide ran away from Georgia on Saturday night to make the case to be No. 1, but it wasn’t enough to topple the Tigers. Clemson defended its turf with a historic blowout against Georgia Tech. The 66-point rout was the largest ever in an Atlantic Coast Conference football game. Clemson received 54 first-place votes out of 62 from the panel of sports writers and broadcasters. The Crimson Tide got the remaining eight first-place votes. Notre Dame moved up to a season-high No. 3, No. 4 Georgia dropped one spot and Ohio State moved up to No. 5 a week before the Big Ten starts playing. Clemson has been No. 1 since the preseason. The Tigers have been top-ranked 23 times in school history but never more than five times in a season before this year. North Carolina took a big fall, dropping nine spots to No. 14 after losing at Florida State. Oklahoma State is No. 6, with Texas A&M, Penn State, Cincinnati and Florida rounding out the top 10. - AP College Football

Trevor Lawrence brushed off the first interception he has thrown this season and passed for a career-high 404 yards and five touchdowns as No. 1 Clemson overwhelmed Georgia Tech 73-7 on Saturday. Lawrence completed 24 of 33 passes. All of his scoring passes came in the Tigers' dominant first half. Clemson led 52-7 at halftime and kept adding to the lead in the second half, even with second- and third-(and maybe fourth-) stringers on the field. Lawrence left the game after Clemson's first possession of the second half. Clemson (5-0, 4-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) outgained Georgia Tech 671-204. The Tigers compiled an equally lopsided 29-7 advantage in first downs.

The second-longest streak of passes without an interception in ACC history ended late in the first quarter when Zamari Walton picked off a pass by Lawrence. Under pressure from Georgia Tech's pass rush, Lawrence overthrew Powell. Walton ended Lawrence's streak of 367 passes without an interception. It was Lawrence's first interception since Oct. 19, 2019 at Louisville. North Carolina State's Russell Wilson set the ACC record with 379 consecutive passes without an interception from 2018-19. Otherwise it was one of the best games of Lawrence's career. His previous high was four touchdown passes. He passed that mark in the first half, connecting for two scoring passes with Amari Rodgers. - AP College/Clemson Football

The top 10 showdown was built up as a matchup between a pair of Heisman candidates in Clemson's Lawrence and Miami's D'Eriq King. Two players exited the game with plenty of Heisman buzz, but both of them play for Clemson. Lawrence accounted for more than 300 total yards and four scores, while Etienne had 149 yards on the ground, 73 yards receiving and a pair of touchdowns. "It just makes your jaw drop sometimes as a quarterback," Lawrence said of Etienne's performance. "You hand it off and there's been a couple of times these past two games where you think he's tackled at the line of scrimmage or will get a yard or two and he pops out and he's gone." King, on the other hand, completed only 43 percent of his passes and turned the ball over twice. - The State

Miami has one 10-win season since 2004, which is before Trevor Lawrence began elementary school. But Clemson's star quarterback and one of the favorites to win the Heisman Trophy is still well aware of the U's history. Lawrence has seen the highlights. He knows about the swagger Miami was known for. The Hurricanes didn't just make plays in their heyday. They made them, celebrated them and let you know about it. "I just know historically Miami's always been a powerhouse," Lawrence said. "They've always had a certain swag about them that when you play them you know what you're going to get. I think they're definitely getting back to that, and that's really good to see."

The Hurricanes have their highest ranking since being ranked No. 7 the last time they played Clemson in the 2017 ACC title game. Miami wasn't up to the task that day, getting pounded 38-3. The Hurricanes finished 0-3 down the stretch that year after starting 10-0 and haven't really been relevant from a national standpoint since, earning seven wins and six wins the following two years. "I think that's just part of what they do," Lawrence said of the trash talk. "That's part of how they operate, whether that's to get in people's heads or just to kind of hype themselves up, that's part of the game plan, I think. It's going to be a lot of fun. Those games are always fun to be a part of." - The State

Trevor Lawrence was happy with Clemson's win over Virginia. He was also glad the top-ranked Tigers were challenged a bit this early in the season. Lawrence threw for 329 yards and three touchdowns as Clemson opened 3-0 for the sixth straight year with a 41-23 victory over the Cavaliers on Saturday night. The Tigers (3-0, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) were not crisp at times against Virginia (1-1, 1-1). However, like so often the past few years when pressed, Clemson and Lawrence found what it took to succeed. "I guess we're in a pretty good position when we're kind of disappointed in an 18-point" win, Lawrencre said.

"I'm really glad we got challenged in some new ways. Part of being a great team is making adjustments and getting better." A big part is having talented players like Lawrence, tailback Travis Etienne and receiver Amari Rodgers. Etienne ran for 115 yards and a score. He also caught a 4-yard scoring pass. Rodgers had two TD catches in the final six minutes of the opening half to give Clemson a 24-3 lead that Virginia could not overcome. "They jump out on teams so quickly, they put you on your heels and never let you recover," Cavaliers coach Bronco Mendenhall said. Virginia tried, though, cutting it to 27-17 midway through the third period. That's when Lawrence found Etienne for a final scoring throw to restore Clemson's momentum. - Clemson/AP College Football

Trevor Lawrence appears destined to be the No. 1 overall pick in next year's NFL draft, and he is already being described as one of the top pro quarterback prospects of all time. Lawrence has been the talk of social media on more than a few occasions over the past couple of weeks, but not just for his play on the field. He is also regularly trending on social media on Sundays as fan bases post about how he could help their team and how they should "tank for Trevor" to get the No. 1 overall pick. "Obviously if you're on social media at all you can't help but see some of it," Lawrence said with a smile. "But it's just funny. It's a new team every week, so I don't think there's any real insight of what's going to happen. It's a long season."

Lawrence, who announced prior to Clemson's opener that this would be his final season of college football, is trying not to pay too much attention to it either. But he can't help but chuckle when he logs onto Twitter and sees that NFL fan bases are tagging him in tweets, begging and pleading for him to end up with their team. "It's just kind of funny, but I don't take it too seriously," Lawrence said. "I know in this position you can't really predict where you're gonna go, what's going to happen. All I can do is enjoy my time while I'm here, perform the best I can, and enjoy where I'm at right now. We'll see next year what happens." - The State

The star quarterback and Heisman favorite completed 8 of 9 passes for 168 yards and three touchdowns against The Citadel. He also rushed for a touchdown. Lawrence's only incomplete pass was a drop by Amari Rodgers, and through two games he has thrown one inaccurate pass all year. Other incompletions were due to a receiver slipping, drops, etc. For the season Lawrence is 30 of 37 passing for 519 yards, with four touchdowns and no interceptions. He also has three rushing scores. "He's really playing exactly the way he's practicing. What you're seeing on game day is exactly what we see in practice, just incredible focus," Swinney said. "Complete ownership of what we're doing. Great poise, discipline. Great feel for the defensive structures and protections and just really throwing the ball with a lot of confidence. He's special.   Trevor Lawrence threw nine passes Saturday. Three of them went for touchdowns. It was that kind of day for No. 1 Clemson. Lawrence and star running back Travis Etienne got plenty of rest as the top-ranked Tigers rolled to a 49-0 victory over The Citadel. Lawrence was 8 for 9 for 168 yards, including first-half scoring passes of 54 and 17 yards to Frank Ladson Jr. and 44 yards to Amari Rodgers. "Might have been my most efficient day since I've been here," he said. "That was just fun." Lawrence also rushed for his third TD already this season, leading the way as the Tigers (2-0) improved to 35-0 against teams from the Football Championship Subdivision.

Clemson came out fast, stayed sharp and played just about everybody available in the runaway victory. "Good to see that maturity and leadership, no matter who we play," coach Dabo Swinney said. Lawrence missed his first throw - Rodgers dropped a ball that hit his hands - before hitting his last eight. The Heisman Trophy favorite was largely done when Clemson went up 28-0 in the first quarter. He returned for one second-quarter series and quickly added points with a perfectly thrown pass down the left side to Ladson. "It was good for us to take care of business early and build depth," Lawrence said. - Clemson/AP College Football

Trevor Lawrence threw for 351 yards and combined for three touchdowns, and No. 1 Clemson continued its domination of Wake Forest with a 37-13 victory on Saturday night in the season opener for both teams. Trevor Etienne ran for 102 yards and a touchdown for Clemson, which improved to 70-5 since the start of the 2015 season under coach Dabo Swinney. Clemson has now outscored Wake Forest 152-19 over the last three seasons, holding the Demon Deacons to just one touchdown. Clemson is looking to win its sixth straight Atlantic Coast Conference title and reach the College Football Playoff national championship game for the fifth time in the six seasons. The last time the Tigers were on the field they lost 42-25 loss to LSU in which Lawrence was held without a touchdown pass. But the Heisman Trophy hopeful looked in solid form against the Demon Deacons. After going three-and-out on its first drive, Clemson scored on its next three possessions, including a pair of short walk-in touchdowns by Lawrence to take a 17-0 lead. On both occasions, the Demon Deacons sold out on the fake handoff to Etienne, allowing Lawrence a free path to the end zone. Lawrence's passes were on the mark for the most part, as he completed 22 of 28 passes. He spread the ball around to eight different receivers in the first half alone as Clemson took a 27-0 lead. - Clemson/AP College Football

A former NFL general manager believes if Lawrence ends up with the Jaguars, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney could join him. Former Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum said on ESPN's "Get Up!" TV show Monday morning that Swinney joining Lawrence in Jacksonville is "the perfect situation." "There's a lot of speculation in the league that Dabo Swinney, who has been on the short list of multiple head coaching searches, could be a coach that teams want to talk about. And this would really be the perfect storm," Tannenbaum said. Swinney was asked in 2018 if he would be interested in coaching in the NFL and replied "never say never."

"I've never really thought much about it. Nobody's really ever called me and said, 'Hey, do you want to come coach this NFL team?' I've never really put much thought into it," Swinney said at the time. "I've always just been so focused on what I'm doing. I guess you never say never." Swinney signed a 10-year, $93 million deal with Clemson in April of 2019. Swinney's deal includes a buyout if he leaves for a college coaching job, but there is no buyout if he leaves to take an NFL job. - The State

A new study released by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that less than 7% of the revenue generated by National Collegiate Athletic Association - more than $8 billion annually - finds its way to football and men's basketball players through scholarships and living stipends. "Intercollegiate amateur athletics in the U.S. largely bars student-athletes from sharing in any of the profits generated by their participation, which creates substantial economic rents for universities," the National Bureau of Economic Research study states. The top NCAA Division 1 schools earn approximately $8.5 billion in annual revenue, with 58% percent of that revenue coming directly from men's football and men's basketball programs. The two highest-paid football positions (starting quarterback and wide receiver) would earn $2.4 and $1.3 million, respectively, and starting basketball players would be paid between $800,000 and $1.2 million per year. - Forbes.com

Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence and running back Darien Rencher helped start a movement to try to save the college football season over the weekend. The two organized the "WeWantToPlay" initiative that went viral earlier this week. Lawrence's tweet outlining the conditions under which college football players hope to have a season in 2020 had more than 15,000 retweets and 62,000 likes as of Wednesday afternoon. It was shared by President Trump on Monday, with Trump's tweet receiving an additional 40,000 retweets and 136,000 likes.

A Clemson player having a social media post go viral during fall camp is not something that could have happened during the previous nine years due to a rule that was in place for nearly a decade before this season. During the summer of 2011, Clemson leaders went to head coach Dabo Swinney with a plan to help limit distractions. As a part of that plan, they told Swinney they wanted social media posts banned from the start of fall camp until after the final game of the year. But now, with social justice issues on the minds of several players and the college football season in danger, players are being allowed to speak up. - The State

A group of senators led by Cory Booker of New Jersey and Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut on Thursday released a plan for reforming college sports with an athletes bill or rights. The legislative plan calls for college athletes to have the ability to earn money for their names, images and likenesses with "minimal restrictions," and much more. The senators also want to ensure for the athletes long-term medical coverage and treatment, enforceable medical standards, academic freedom and revenue sharing agreements.

Last month, NCAA President Mark Emmert appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee for a hearing about name, image and likeness. Booker and Blumenthal questioned Emmert about athlete welfare and said then their plan for a bill of rights was in the works. Booker and Blumenthal were joined in a statement by seven other senators, including Democrats Chris Murphy of Connecticut, a frequent NCAA critic, and vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris of California. The NCAA is in the process of changing its rules to permit athletes to earn money off their names, images and likenesses for things like endorsements and appearances. - AP College Football

Michigan defensive back Hunter Reynolds saw the tweets from Trevor Lawrence and other college football players pushing for the opportunity to play this season despite the pandemic. Reynolds, one of the organizers behind a players' rights movement in the Big Ten, didn't like the way some on social media seemed to be pitting Lawrence's message against the efforts of #BigTenUnited and #WeAreUnited. "There was a lot of division," Reynolds told AP early Monday morning.

Reynolds got on a call with Lawrence and the star quarterback's Clemson teammate, Darien Rencher, and within a matter of hours the summer of athlete empowerment found another gear. College football players from across the country united Sunday in an attempt to save their season and ensure they will no longer be left out of the sport's biggest decisions.   Several top NFL prospects have opted out of the 2020 college football season, but not the player many pundits project as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 professional draft. Clemson junior quarterback Trevor Lawrence said Friday evening that he weighed his options as far as whether or not to sit out during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, but ultimately he decided to move forward and play for the Tigers this fall. "I think everyone's thought about it just with everything going on, but since I've made the decision to play I haven't thought about it again. That's my decision. I'm committed," Lawrence said. "I want to play my last year here. That's what I'm excited to do. It's my third year and I even have another one. So I think people are forgetting I've got four years."

The Georgia native added that he had conversations with another potential first-round pick in Clemson running back Travis Etienne about whether or not they should play this year. Lawrence and Etienne both came to the same conclusion. "Me and Travis are definitely here. We're committed to playing. Once I decided I'm playing my mind is off of that," Lawrence said. "After this past year everyone was saying all of this stuff I've got to work on, so at some point you've got to make decisions for yourself. I'm just excited to play football. That's what I do. That's what I love to do." Lawrence "totally gets" other players in college football opting to sit out, but he feels good about the protocols Clemson has in place to keep players in the program safe. - The State
