Tre Walker, San Jose State, Player News
|
Mississippi State football nearly landed an experienced player for coach Mike Leach's offense Friday, but an SEC bylaw got in the way. Former San Jose State wide receiver Tre Walker announced his intention to transfer to Mississippi State via the NCAA tr ansfer portal. Hours later, he tweeted he will not be transferring to MSU after all because of a rule that prohibited him from enrolling. That rule is bylaw 14.5.5.6 in the SEC Bylaws and Commissioner Regulations handbook. It states an athlete transferri ng from one four-year institution to another must meet certain requirements. One is that the athlete must have two years of eligibility remaining unless he has already graduated. Walker does not have his degree from San Jose State and only has one year o f eligibility remaining, so he is not eligible to enroll at Mississippi State or any other SEC institution. - The Clarion Ledger

Mississippi State added another receiver to its already dynamic room. Tre Walker, a four-year standout at San Jose State, announced his intention to transfer to MSU for his final year of eligibility via Twitter on Friday. Walker helped the Trojans to a 7 -1 record and the Mountain West title game this year. He finished his time at SJSU with 189 career catches for 2,790 yards -- both of which rank top-10 in program history. Walker, who will be on scholarship at MSU, becomes the fifth transfer to join MSU over the offseason. Other imports include quarterbacks Jack Abraham (Southern Mississippi), Chance Lovertich (South Alabama) and Jack Kristofek (Sam Houston State). The Bulldogs also added former Central Florida defensive end Randy Charlton. - The Dispat ch

San Jose State's rough week got even rougher with the news star wide receiver Tre Walker is transferring and wide receivers coach Kevin Cummings has been hired at Arizona. Walker, a two-time All-Mountain West Conference receiver who had nearly 200 catche s and 3,000 yards in his four years at San Jose State, announced he'll play his fifth and final collegiate season elsewhere. That news seemed to catch Spartans quarterback Nick Starkel by surprise. Walker officially entered transfer over the weekend and it's not a stretch to believe he could be following his position coach, Cummings, to the University of Arizona. - San Jose Mercury News
