J.D. King, Georgia Southern, Player News

Georgia Southern's J.D. King was making a run to an outstanding season in 2020 when it was cut short by a torn ACL in his left knee in the seventh game. A combination of a power and speed back with the ability to run inside and outside the tackles, King still earned All-Sun Belt Conference honorable mention honors. King had surgery and rehabilitated the knee, missing spring and fall practice sesssions. After sitting out the first three games of the 2021 slate, he made his return on Sept. 25 against Louisiana.

King saw only limited action, appearing in four games and was able to redshirt and plan a return for a sixth year this fall. That plan has changed, as King announced on his Twitter account Tuesday that he has retired from playing football. "It is with a humble heart that I would like to announce my retirement from the game I love," the post read. "My body and my mind tell me it is time to take my next step in life." He played in 12 games in 2019, starting six, and made All-Sun Belt honorable mention after tallying 804 yards and eight TDs on 185 carries. King started the first seven games in 2020 before the knee injury against Troy cost him the remainder of that contest and the next six. He finished with 116 carries for 625 yards and five TDs. - Savannah Morning News

Sun Belt Football Media Day is only a few days away, on Thursday, July 22nd, and the conference has announced that Georgia Southern football student-athletes J.D. King and Todd Bradley-Glenn will accompany head coach Chad Lunsford to the 2021 Sun Belt Media Day. Last season, the SBC accumulated an FBS-leading 21 non-conference wins in 2020, including a 3-0 record against Big 12 opponents. Two teams (Coastal Carolina and Louisiana) finished in the final AP Poll, Coaches Poll, and College Football Playoff Rankings for the first time in conference history. In addition to the conference's accomplishments on the football field, the conference boasted a 135 percent increase in TV viewership in 2020, with seven of the conference's games surpassing 1 million viewers. Over the course of the past five football seasons, the conference has posted an FBS-leading .692 winning percentage in bowl games. - Georgia Southern Football
