Chevan Cordeiro passed for 340 yards and two touchdowns, Kairee Robinson ran for two big scores and San Jose State rallied for an emotional 35-28 victory over Nevada on Saturday night. San Jose State postponed its football game last weekend after freshman running back Camdan McWright was killed when he was hit by a school bus while riding a scooter near campus. SJSU started tonight's game by forming a 6 on the field in honor of McWright, who wore the number. Toa Taua had two touchdown runs to stake Nevada to a 14-7 lead at the half. The Wolf Pack's lead grew to 21-7 just 2:02 into the third quarter when Shane Illingworth connected with BJ Casteel for a 53-yard touchdown. Cordeiro answered with a 2-yard touchdown run and a 14-yard scoring toss to Shamar Garrett to pull San Jose State (5-2, 3-1 Mountain West Conference) even at 21-all.

Taua's third touchdown run - a 5-yarder - gave Nevada (2-7, 0-5) a 28-21 lead early in the fourth quarter. Kairee Robinson answered for San Jose State with a 2-yard scoring run to knot the score with 6:29 left to play. Two pass interference calls on Nevada's Isaiah Essissima kept the Spartans' drive alive. After a 13-yard kickoff return and an offside penalty gave Nevada the ball on their own 8-yard line, the Spartans defense forced a three-and-out. A 25-yard punt gave San Jose State the ball on the Wolf Pack 42. Six plays later Robinson ran it in from 5 yards out and the Spartans led for the first time with 1:10 left. Cade Hall had back-to-back sacks for SJSU and Alii Matau picked off Illingworth on third-and-13 to seal the victory. Cordeiro completed 33 of 45 passes for the Spartans. He hit Dominick Mazotti for a 10-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Robinson finished with 40 yards on 11 carries. Illingworth passed for 223 yards, completing 18 of 29 attempts, for the Wolf Pack. - San Jose State/AP College Football

Chevan Cordeiro is set to succeed Nick Starkel, who led the Spartans to an undefeated regular season in 2020 and was a steady presence under center for two years. Nick Nash, now a senior, started last season when Starkel missed time with an arm injury, but the job this year is Cordeiro's to lose. The newcomer from Hawaii may not have the effortless arm talent Starkel displayed, but his athleticism and quickness will bring another dimension to coach Brent Brennan's offense. "Whatever a player's skill set is, you're going to apply that to what you're cooking," Brennan said. "He brings a fun and exciting skill set with his ability to throw, and when you combine that with his ability to move, you have something special." The fifth-year newcomer brings that unpredictability on the ground, but he insisted he is a passer who can drive the ball downfield and run an offense.

"I'm a playmaker," Cordeiro said. "This summer I worked on my throwing mechanics so I can be more accurate, and spent a lot of time working on my pre-snap reads." In four seasons with the Rainbow Warriors, Cordeiro threw for 6,167 yards and 45 touchdowns against 22 interceptions, with the vast majority of that production coming over the past two seasons as the team's primary starter. He also has chipped in 1,083 yards and 13 scores on the ground. - San Jose Mercury News

Cordeiro said he was familiar with San Jose State after four seasons of competing against the Mountain West rival. "I knew Coach (Brent) Brennan," Cordeiro said. "He's a fun coach, a player's coach. Just the teammates, the culture, the family. That's why I made the choice. That's what made the transition so easy. That's why I picked them." Cordeiro said several relatives live in Nevada. "They come down and spend some time," he said. "My mom came down and helped me move in. In the beginning, it was hard. Of course, I missed home. But my roommates are fun to hang out with." The transfer portal comes with a 14-day grace period, beginning with the first organized workout with the new team, for a player to return to his previous school. But Cordeiro said he never considered returning to UH. "From the very first day I was committed to San Jose State," Cordeiro said. "I wasn't going to change it, no matter what, no matter what Hawaii was going to offer me. Nothing was going to change the fact I was going to stick with San Jose. I bought in."

Brennan said SJSU offers Cordeiro the blend of opportunity and challenge. Cordeiro agreed, saying, "I didn't want to go to a team that I was handed a starting job without working for it. I wanted to battle. I think (quarterback Nick) Nash got me better. I got him better. Even the other quarterbacks in the room. I like the quarterback room. It's one big family. We all love each other. We're all getting better." Cordeiro said he spends a great deal of time at the Spartans' football complex, where he participates in weight-training and studies football videos. He said he shops at Costco for white rice. He has adjusted to NorCal's freeways. And, he said emphatically, "I'm having fun now. I found the love of the game again...Everything has been good." - Honolulu Advertiser

With former-SEC transfer Nick Starkel out of eligibility, his heir apparent appeared to be backup Nick Nash, who filled in admirably during six starts as an injury replacement. But another dual-threat QB from the Mountain West entered the picture in Hawaii transfer Chevan Cordeiro. "His ability to make every throw, we've seen him do that against us," Brennan said. As a redshirt freshman in 2019, Cordeiro threw for over 300 yards and three TDs and ran for another pair in 42-40 victory over SJSU. "I've been a fan of that young guy ever since," Brennan said. Also added to the mix is incoming freshman Tyler Voss, a three-star recruit out of Southern California. "He spins it as cleans as anybody I've seen, but he also has the ability to move," Brennan said. - San Jose Mercury News

He announced the move on his Instagram account. Cordeiro, a Saint Louis School alumnus, announced his departure from the Rainbow Warriors last week. He will have two seasons of eligibility remaining. He threw for 6,167 yards in 36 games across four seasons, with 45 touchdown passes and 22 interceptions. He also ran for 1,083 yards and 13 scores.   Chevan Cordeiro passed for three touchdowns, Dedrick Parson ran for two scores and Hawaii beat Portland State 49-35 on Saturday night in the first-ever football game played on school campus. The 9,000-seat retro-fitted Clarence T.C. Ching Complex will be the program's home until the New Aloha Stadium Entertainment District is completed. It was Hawaii's first home game outside of Aloha Stadium since Dec. 7, 1974 when the Rainbow Warriors hosted Arizona State at Honolulu Stadium, which had served as the team's home field from 1926-74.

Cordeiro threw touchdown passes to Nick Mardner and Jared Smart, Calvin scored on a wild winding 38-yard run - on which he crossed over into Hawaii territory before racing down the left sideline into the end zone - and Parson ran for a 17-yard TD as the Rainbow Warriors scored touchdowns on their first four possessions to take a 28-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Parson added a 2-yard TD run in the third quarter and Dae Dae Hunter, who finished with 128 yards rushing, scored on a 59-yard run in the fourth for Hawaii (1-1). Davis Alexander threw for 400 yards and three touchdowns for Portland State (0-1), but much of that came after the Rainbow Warriors had the game well in hand. Cordeiro finished 18-of-25 passing with one interception and had 66 yards rushing. - Hawaii/AP College Football

University of Hawaii quarterback Chevan Cordeiro is believed to be the first college athlete in the state of Hawaii to enter into an endorsement partnership with a local company. The Saint Louis graduate was introduced as a spokesperson for Central Pacific Bank on Thursday on the heels of the NCAA announcing a uniform interim policy suspending name, image, and likeness (NIL) rules for all incoming and current student-athletes in all sports. "I'm thankful to Central Pacific Bank for giving me this opportunity," said Cordeiro. "This is an exciting development for me and for college athletes in general. I look forward to learning more about how to balance the demands of being a student-athlete and what it takes to be successful in business."
