Chevan Cordeiro is set to succeed Nick Starkel, who led the Spartans to an undefeated regular season in 2020 and was a steady presence under center for two years. Nick Nash, now a senior, started last season when Starkel missed time with an arm injury, but the job this year is Cordeiro's to lose. The newcomer from Hawaii may not have the effortless arm talent Starkel displayed, but his athleticism and quickness will bring another dimension to coach Brent Brennan's offense. "Whatever a player's skill set is, you're going to apply that to what you're cooking," Brennan said. "He brings a fun and exciting skill set with his ability to throw, and when you combine that with his ability to move, you have something special." The fifth-year newcomer brings that unpredictability on the ground, but he insisted he is a passer who can drive the ball downfield and run an offense.

"I'm a playmaker," Cordeiro said. "This summer I worked on my throwing mechanics so I can be more accurate, and spent a lot of time working on my pre-snap reads." In four seasons with the Rainbow Warriors, Cordeiro threw for 6,167 yards and 45 touchdowns against 22 interceptions, with the vast majority of that production coming over the past two seasons as the team's primary starter. He also has chipped in 1,083 yards and 13 scores on the ground. - San Jose Mercury News
