Gunnar Holmberg tied a school record with four rushing touchdowns and threw for a fifth as Duke overcame Kansas for a 52-33 victory Saturday, its third straight win. The Blue Devils (3-1) struck for 21 points during a six-minute span of the third quarter , taking the lead on the way to eclipsing their 2020 win total. Holmberg's scoring runs came from 4, 1, 3 and 13 yards. He threw for 328 yards, completing 22 of 29 passes.Holmberg became the eighth Duke player with four rushing touchdowns in a gam e and the first since quarterback Brandon Connette ran for four in 2013. "It's part of the game plan," Holmberg said of his 17 carries for 88 yards. "The O-line did their part. The receivers (blocked well) on the perimeter." Holmberg needed brief medical attention following his final TD run. He said he just had the wind knocked out of him. Duke's Mataeo Durant ran for 124 yards on 21 carries, including a 57-yard touchdown for the game's first points. Jake Bobo made seven catches for 105 yards. "We've go t a lot of weapons and we've got to continue to grow and get better," Duke coach David Cutcliffe said. Duke scored three touchdowns in the first quarter and did all its scoring in the first half, then held off a Northwestern comeback to earn a 30-23 victory in a non-conference game Saturday afternoon. "I would like to stop doing what losing teams do," Nor thwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald said. "Losing teams turn the ball over. Losing teams have self-inflicted wounds. Losing teams give up explosive plays. Losing teams have communication issues. That's why you lose games. This is not hard. I'm not trying to d iscredit Duke, but we gift-wrapped it for them." The Blue Devils were efficient on both sides of the ball early on, scoring on six of their first eight possessions behind Gunnar Holmberg, who completed 31 of 44 passes for a career-high 314 yards and a to uchdown. "Gunnar is playing pretty dang well. Gunnar wants to win, and Gunnar is a humble and an unselfish player," Duke coach David Cutcliffe said. "He's a good thrower. But also, Northwestern did crowd the line of scrimmage. There's no reason to be har d-headed." Meanwhile, the Blue Devils' defense forced Northwestern (1-2) into a punt or a turnover on its first seven drives. The Wildcats didn't score until late in the second quarter, following a change at quarterback. Starter Hunter Johnson threw thre e interceptions and was relieved by Andrew Marty, who orchestrated a quick scoring drive that covered 75 yards in just six plays. - Duke/AP College Football
