K.J. Sails, South Florida, Player News

  04/04/21 - CB K.J. SailsrSr/2021, South Florida, 5-10, 177 (DS#59 CB) + More +

As defensive back KJ Sails went through the most important workout of his life Thursday during USF's pro day, an NFL scout stopped him with an odd-sounding request. He wanted to find out more about the governor. "It was kind of funny," Sails said. "I didn't really think that they did their research about that type of stuff on me." Sails, of course, is not the governor. The East Bay High alumnus merely spent a day as Tampa's honorary mayor in February. But as pro teams continue their research about the NFL hopeful ahead of this month's draft, they'll discover an impressive player who will make an impact far beyond any locker room.

Sails' onfield influence was strong enough during his two seasons at USF. After arriving as a transfer from North Carolina in 2019, he started 20 games for the Bulls and was one of their bright spots during a rough stretch. He earned second-team all-conference honors as a junior and would have participated in an all-star showcase or two this offseason, had they not been cancelled because of the pandemic. His impression on the community was equally notable. Amid the nationwide unrest after George Floyd's death over the summer, Sails organized a unity walk from downtown Tampa to Central Park Village. Mayor Jane Castor became his mentor and awarded him the key to the city. "I'm thankful to impact my community, because this community means a lot to me," Sails said. "I grew up here. I was born and raised here. A lot of my family's from here. It's a blessing." - Tampa Tribune

  11/22/20 - CB K.J. SailsrSr/2021, South Florida, 5-10, 177 (DS#59 CB) + More +

USF senior cornerback K.J. Sails will not play his final two games of the season after sustaining a knee injury during Saturday's 56-21 loss at Houston, coach Jeff Scott said Tuesday. Sails will not, however, require surgery while he recovers. Sails, an East Bay High alumnus and local philanthropist who organized a unity walk through Tampa in June, finished the season with 22 tackles in eight games. In 2019, Sails finished with 42 tackles and three interceptions and was named to the American Athletic Conference second team. The loss of Sails is yet another significant blow to USF's already strained roster, which after COVID-19 issues, injuries and players simply opting out from playing, is down to 64. - Tampa Tribune

2020 WUERFFEL TROPHY PRESEASON WATCH LIST: KJ Sails, USF, senior, defensive back,...Sails organized a unity walk in downtown Tampa in early June that led nearly 400 participants clad in black on a reflective and educational march through the Central Park Village neighborhood to the Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church to highlight the quest for social justice and positive change. Sails has also been regularly involved in other community service projects during his time at USF.

Heading into his senior campaign, and second at USF after transferring from North Carolina. The cornerback earned second-team all-conference postseason honors in 2019 as he led the Bulls with five takeaways and three interceptions while finishing 15th in the conference with nine passes defended and tallying 42 tackles. Sails also returned 12 punts for 117 yards in his first season on the field for USF. His 9.8 yards per return average would have ranked second in the conference, but he was just shy of having enough returns to qualify. - South Florida Football

2019 ALL-AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE SECOND TEAM (COACHES): CB KJ Sails, USF, Jr.,...Sails, who completed his first season at USF after transferring from North Carolina, was also named an honorable mention All-American by Pro Football Focus and to that organization's All-AAC defensive team. The 5-11 cornerback led the Bulls with five takeaways and nine passes defended on the season while posting 42 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble. His three pass interceptions led the team and his two fumble recoveries tied for the team lead as he started all 12 games and became a lockdown corner for the Bulls. - South Florida Football
