Though there are seven quarterbacks listed on the roster, three have formed an early breakaway group: Colorado transfer Tyler Lytle, redshirt sophomore Garrett Dzuro and redshirt freshman Zamir Wise. "We're in the middle of a competition. We've got three great kids with good skills, winnable football skills," Bell said. "It's just now we've got to go find the right guy." Dzuro played in three of UMass' four games last year, completing 15 of 36 passes for 220 yards. Lytle appeared in seven games in two y ears at CU and threw for 55 yards. Wise joined the Minutemen two weeks before they kicked off last season, so the staff moved him to wide receiver so he could contribute. He caught two passes for 16 yards. "Tyler's more of a classic distributor, Garrett' s a little more of a classic distributor, and Zaire Wise is as good with his feet as anyone in our program," Bell said. "All three of those guys are doing a great job, still learning the basics of the offense. Hopefully as we go through spring we'll star t to develop a pecking order." - Daily Hampshire Gazette

Colorado backup quarterback Tyler Lytle is entering the NCAA transfer portal. On Saturday evening, a few hours after the Buffaloes' 38-21 loss to Utah at Folsom Field, Lytle announced his decision on social media. With Lytle going into the transfer porta l, true freshman Brendon Lewis could be elevated to the top backup spot for the rest of the season. Lewis has not appeared in a game. Lytle, a 6-foot-5, 220-pound redshirt junior from Redondo Beach, Calif., came to CU in January of 2017 after a stellar c areer at Servite High School. In terms of scholarship offers, Lytle is the most highly recruited quarterback to sign with CU since Fairview's Craig Ochs in 2000. - The Denver Post

After the Pac-12 made the decision on Aug. 11 to postpone the fall sports season until after Dec. 31 because of the coronavirus pandemic, Lytle had to shift gears mentally. Instead of battling senior Sam Noyer and true freshman Brendon Lewis for the star ting job in preseason camp this month, Lytle will spend the next several months - at least - perfecting his craft even more. "I had three years to really adjust to college football and figure out what I needed to work on," said Lytle, who has been a back up to Steven Montez, now in the NFL, since coming to CU. "You never stop that, really. "Through these past three years, size and strength was kind of a big thing for me I'm at a good weight right now. I've gotten a lot faster, so I'm continuing to improv e my body, improve the mental aspects of the game." The 6-foot-5 Lytle is now a legitimate 220 pounds and has combined strength and speed. Never known for his speed, Lytle was asked if that aspect was overlooked by others early in his career. - Daily Cam era

The Blake Stenstrom era never really got off the ground with the CU Buffs football program. Now the former Valor Christian star and 2018 three-star quarterback recruit appears to be headed east after announcing Tuesday night on Twitter that he intends to transfer to Princeton. He played in three games for CU in 2019 while serving as a backup to Steven Montez, completing 1 of 3 passes with one interception. His biggest highlight came on a 27-yard run in a brief appearance against USC.With Montez g one for the NFL - he signed with the Washington Redskins as an undrafted free agent - the quarterback position is one of many things in flux for first-year head coach Karl Dorrell. Among those expecting to compete for the starting nod are incoming three- star recruit Brendon Lewis, senior Sam Noyer and junior Tyler Lytle. "It is really a wide open position," Dorrell said during a Pac-12 Webinar on Tuesday. "We're coaching them all hard and we're just going to see how the things fall in place when we get a chance to line up at the beginning of the season." - Denver Post
