Jafar Armstrong, Western Illinois, Player News

Illinois football's success snagging transfers in the Bret Bielema era continued Friday afternoon when Notre Dame receiver Jafar Armstrong announced his commitment to the Illini. Armstrong spent the previous four years with the Fighting Irish and held an Illinois offer during his high school recruitment. The 6-foot, 220-pound athlete out of Lee's Summit, Mo., caught just three passes for 38 yards and had a rushing touchdown during Notre Dame's 2020 season. All told, Armstrong hauled in 30 receptions for 294 yards in three seasons at Notre Dame that also saw him rush for 513 yards on 135 carries and nine touchdowns. His most productive season happened in 2018 when he rushed for 383 yards on 72 carries and seven touchdowns to go along with 14 receptions for 159 yards. - News Gazette Tribune

Jafar Armstrong started his college career as a wide receiver, moved to running back as a sophomore and then moved back to wide receiver at midseason this year. Per a source, he's joined in the transfer portal at the moment by junior running back Jahmir Smith, who in October left the roster to focus on improving his mental health, and reserve center Colin Grunhard, Armstrong tweeted his news Saturday evening. Armstrong rushed for 22 yards and 17 carries and caught three passes as a running back for 38 yards this season before moving back to wide receiver in late October. But he couldn't gain traction there either and didn't have a touch on offense after ND's 45-3 romp at Pitt on Oct. 24. - South Bend Tribune

One small change Notre Dame has made in its offense is returning senior Jafar Armstrong to the wide receiver position. Armstrong has been playing running back since a breakout season in 2018, but his usage at the position has been almost exclusively limited to lopsided victories this year. Through six games, Armstrong registered 17 carries for eight yards and one touchdown. Armstrong was recruited by the Irish as a receiver out of Shawnee Mission (Kan.) Bishop Miege. On this week's depth chart, the 6-1, 220-pound Armstrong was listed as the No. 2 boundary receiver behind Javon McKnley. The emergence of Kyren Williams, Chris Tyree and C'Bo Flemister at running back has given the Irish the confidence to move Armstrong elsewhere. "We think that Jafar can be much more of an impact player for us at the wide receiver position," Kelly said. "He will continue to work there. Eventually when he gets a little bit more time there, he's going to impact us and help us win football games." - South Bend Tribune
