2021 ALL-BIG 12 SECOND TEAM (COACHES): LB Nik Bonitto, Oklahoma,...A redshirt junior, Bonitto has started all 12 contests and ranks second in the Big 12 with his 15.0 tackles for loss. He also ranks third nationally and first in the Big 12 with his three fumble recoveries this season. The Fort Lauderdale, Fla., product, who was also a Butkus Award semifinalist, paces the team in QB hurries (nine) and has registered 7.0 sacks (for 39 lost yards), a pass breakup and a forced fumble. - Oklahoma Football

Rush linebacker Nik Bonitto has plenty of personal momentum heading into this season. He's a popular preseason All-America pick and is on the watch list for several major defensive awards. The redshirt junior is surprised by the notoriety, even if it shouldn't be a shock after he was named a Pro Football Focus' first-team All-American and second team by The Associated Press last season. "I feel like even though I did have a good year last year, it wasn't my standard and what I think I can do because I still have a lot to grow on my game," Bonitto said. But though he might not be sure about the national praise, Bonitto is embracing his internal role as one of the leaders on a Sooners defense with plenty of expectations. "It's everything that I've asked for, especially when playing how I did last year, and it's to be expected," Bonitto said. "So I definitely won't shy away from it." - Daily Oklahoman

After the watch lists for the offensive awards were announced last week, the focus shifts to defense and special teams. The Butkus Award watch list, released on Monday, included OU linebackers Nik Bonitto and Brian Asamoah. The award is given annually to the nation's top line backer. Bonitto enters his senior year as a leader for the Sooners' improved defensive squad. Last season, the senior outside linebacker recorded 18 solo tackles and led the team with 8.5 sacks. Bonitto was also named to the preseason All-Big 12 team earlier this month. - Norman Transcript

As the Sooners have risen, so has Bonitto, and that's no accident. "His turnaround has just been fantastic," OU coach Lincoln Riley said. "It's a great story to see where he was, and I think it's great for a lot of young athletes out there. They ought to read his story. Everybody thinks, 'Well, I get highly recruited and I'm gonna roll into OU or any of these other places and I'm gonna be this (star) and it's just gonna happen.' And Nik was extremely highly recruited, came out of one of the best high schools in the country and was extremely successful coming in and then, man, it was rough. "A lot of dudes would've quit. A lot of dudes would've transferred. A lot of guys would've went and done something else. He's reaping the rewards right now. Three years ago, to think that we would bring Nik Bonitto to Big 12 Media Days is … at that point I would've said, 'No way." - Daily Oklahoman

Nik Bonitto has some unfinished business, he said. The Oklahoma outside linebacker will return for another season in Norman, announcing his decision Monday morning. Bonitto, a second-team Associated Press All-America selection, could have declared for the 2021 NFL Draft. It would be hard to blame him after recording career single-season bests this past season with 11 tackles for loss and 8.2 sacks. - Norman Transcript

When it was over, after Oklahoma had blasted Kansas 62-9, winning its fourth straight conference game after losing its first two, defensive coordinator Alex Grinch was asked about the pressure his unit put on the Jayhawks offense. "It was, I think, we've talked about the disruption up front. I think, in some ways, it's kind of been a steady build," he said. "I think, part of it, what happens is, are you OK with just getting there once? And then it kind of becomes, I don't know, feeding off each other? Maybe then a friendly competition?" The point Grinch was trying to make in the way only he can make it was, yes, the Sooners put all kinds of pressure on Kansas on Saturday, making it three straight games in which his unit has played very well.

OU did not give up a touchdown until the game's final play, when Kansas quarterback Will Huggins found Miles Kendrick for a 20-yard score. Because it didn't matter, no extra point was attempted. Prior to that drive, OU had allowed just 171 yards of total offense and surrendered only a 32-yard field goal on the final play of the first half, which brought the Jayhawks within 31-3. Along the way, the Sooners finished with 11 tackles for 75 yards in Kansas losses, nine of which were sacks for 73 yards in losses. Linebacker Nik Bonitto finished with four tackles, three of them sacks for 21 yards in losses. "We just played as a whole," Bonitto said. "I feel like it was a testament to how we practiced this week, or how we've been practicing, really. You saw all of it pay off today." - Norman Transcript

Ruffin McNeill is stepping down as Oklahoma's assistant head coach and outside linebackers coach to help care for his 85-year-old father in North Carolina. The school made the announcement Thursday. Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley hired McNeill in 2017. He coached defensive tackles that season and at the start of the 2018 season before being named interim co-defensive coordinator for the final eight games of 2018. Riley and McNeill have coached together in some capacity for 15 of the past 17 years. McNeill said stepping away was one of the hardest decisions he's had to make. He said he is not retiring and plans to return to coaching someday. - AP College Football
