  11/20/21 - ILB Nate LandmanrSr/2022, Colorado, 6-3, 238 (DS#12 ILB) + More +

Out with a shoulder injury, Nate Landman still wanted in on the action. No longer content to merely listen in on the headset in street clothes late in the game, the Colorado senior linebacker ducked into the back, changed into his uniform and took the field for the game-ending kneel-down. Only fitting that a defensive player came up with yet another memorable moment Saturday. Jack Lamb returned a fumble 88 yards for a touchdown, one of four turnovers created by Colorado, and the defense sealed the game with a fourth-down stop as the Buffaloes held on for a 20-17 win over Washington. "Well, we found another way to win at home," Colorado coach Karl Dorrell cracked. "It's interesting to look at the stat sheet, and you would say, How did they win that game?" Here's why: Colorado was outgained by a 426-183 margin, converted 2 of 13 third-down opportunities and saw Washington dominate time of possession.

But the Buffaloes (4-7, 3-5 Pac-12) relied on their bend-don't-break defense with the offense struggling most of the afternoon. Colorado intercepted two passes by Dylan Morris and forced two fumbles. Linebacker Carson Wells wrapped it up when he hurried Morris into an incompletion on fourth down. It gave the Buffs the ball back on downs to run out the clock. Out there went Landman, who's been hurt for the last month but dressed in his uniform as part of Senior Day. He spent most of the afternoon standing on the sideline in street clothes as he helped fire up the defense. "He told me he was going to do it," Wells said. "I told him he should have taken a snap." - Colorado/AP College Football

For any athlete returning from a ruptured Achilles' tendon, the main question is not necessarily whether they'll play again, but if they'll be able to play at the same level they were at before the injury. That's the task in front of Colorado linebacker Nate Landman, who ruptured his right Achilles' during a Dec. 12 game against Utah. The All-American candidate is slated to make his return on Friday when the Buffaloes host Northern Colorado at Folsom Field (7 p.m., TV: Pac-12 Network) and he can't wait. "I'm definitely not the same player," Landman said Tuesday. "I think I'm a better player."

CU's leading tackler the past three years aggressively attacked his rehab this year and said he's gone through preseason practices without any setbacks and with an eye towards leading the defense once again. "One (way of being better), being in the film room and studying and learning a new defense," he said. "I learn new keys and things every day from my staff. So on the mental side, I'm way smarter than I was last year. And on the physical side, I feel faster and more explosive. I was even talking to (head coach Karl) Dorrell today and he thought the same thing." Tight end Brady Russell, who missed the bulk of the final five games of 2020 and spent much of the offseason getting himself ready, didn't hesitate in agreeing with Landman. "He's looked better than ever," Russell said. "Absolutely. That's not an exaggeration either. He just rehabbed so hard. He worked so hard. Me and him kind of had a similar offseason. His obviously was worse, but it's been fun working with him working back into things and trying to get back up to speed where we were. I think both of us have worked past where we were in the past. We're a lot better and more mature players than we've been before." - Daily Camera

If you can navigate an F-150 around BoCo with a walking boot, Nate Landman figures, why can't you run with Texas A&M? "I actually drove with the boot on," the CU Buffs' star linebacker said Thursday with a puckish grin. "Which I was told not to do, but I did it anyway. It's tough. Sometimes you'd hit the brake and the gas at the same time." Landman's steering the CU bandwagon these days, and despite the Buffs coming off a COVID-trimmed 4-2 season in 2020 and the program's second bowl berth in 13 years, there's still plenty of room in the cabin. "Those preseason rankings and all that stuff, it's just on paper," Landman told The Post after CU wrapped up its first practice of preseason camp. "And I think even the teams that are perceived to be the top teams have to prove it, too … I think it's a 'prove-it' year every year."

Yeah, but for CU, this year, that whole prove-it hook sorta fits. The Buffs shocked and charmed us all last fall with that 4-0 start and a top 25 ranking, Cinderella in cleats, a ray of hope that broke through the clouds of COVID-19. The Buffs ran the ball like it was 1993 all over again. Until Landman tore his right Achilles tendon in the frigid home finale against the Utes, they'd managed to stop the run, too. Sure, the Alamo Bowl was a five-alarm dumpster fire. But that didn't change the fact that the road to San Antonio was made even more fun because nobody outside of Colorado Avenue saw them coming. - Denver Post

  08/01/21 - ILB Nate LandmanrSr/2022, Colorado, 6-3, 238 (DS#12 ILB) + More +

Nate Landman's emotions got the best of him while lying on the snowy, Folsom Field turf on Dec. 12. It wasn't really about the physical pain from rupturing his Achilles' tendon during Colorado's game against rival Utah that day, though. "I knew what was coming after that," Landman, CU's star linebacker, said during Pac-12 media day on Tuesday in Hollywood, Calif. "I knew straight away that I ruptured my Achilles, and then being so close to where I was (with graduating and entering the NFL Draft), that's why I was so emotional." Although Landman was a senior during the 2020 season, all players were granted an extra year of eligibility by the NCAA because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Landman, a two-time All-Pac-12 player and 2020 Butkus Award semifinalist, was not planning to use that extra year, but that second-quarter play against the Utes changed everything.

"Not my plan (to be back this year), but I've actually had one of the best semesters and time at CU these last couple months," he said. "It's been a long eight months but I can't wait to get back out there. It's a blessing to be able to play another year of college football." CU head coach Karl Dorrell said the team expects Landman to be 100 percent healthy by the middle of preseason camp, which starts Aug. 5. Landman, of course, has a different timeline. "If you told me I had to go play a game tomorrow I would go play a game tomorrow," Landman said. "Obviously my strength coach and trainer will tell you I need a couple more weeks, but that's just where my headspace is at and I trust it and I'm excited." - Daily Camera

Colorado's Nate Landman continues receiving preseason recognition. On Monday, the Buffaloes senior was named to the preseason watch list for the Butkus Award, presented annually to the top linebacker in the country. A week ago, Landman was named to the watch list for the Bednarik Award, presented to the top defensive player in the country. He has also been on several preseason All-Pac-12 lists from various publications. Last season, Landman was named as a semifinalist for the Butkus Award. A two-time, first-team All-Pac-12 selection, he had 61 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and five sacks only five games in 2020. Landman has led the Buffs in tackles in each of the past three seasons and is tied for 10th in CU history with 338 career tackles. Landman, who has played in 40 career games with 29 starts, is looking to bounce back from a ruptured Achilles' tendon. - Daily Camera

The 2022 NFL Draft is about 11 months away and a lot could happen between now and then, but here's a look at CU top potential draft candidates for next year. A senior last year, Landman is taking advantage of the NCAA granting an extra year of eligibility. He was having an All-American type of season in 2020 before rupturing his Achilles' tendon in the regular-season finale. An exceptional tackler and run stopper, Landman was possibly a mid-to-late-round pick this year if healthy. If he proves healthy this fall and has a great season, he could be the first Buff off the board. - Daily Camera

On Tuesday night, Landman took part in a CU-sponsored virtual event, "Discovering Dorrell." During the event, host Mark Johnson interviewed head coach Karl Dorrell, while a set of former football players spoke with current players. Landman was interviewed by Matt Russell, who won the Butkus Award as an inside linebacker with the Buffs in 1996. During the interview, Landman provided an update on his injury recovery from rupturing his Achilles' tendon on Dec. 12 against Utah.

"The rehab is going a lot better than I thought," said Landman, who was a semifinalist for the Butkus Award last season and is not participating in CU's spring practices this month. "I'm actually ahead of schedule. I've been running for the past two weeks on the underwater treadmill and after this week, they'll move me to the (AlterG treadmill), which is just modified bodyweight running. So, I would say about two, three (weeks), maybe even a month ahead of schedule on that term." The Buffs are hopeful that Landman will be ready to go when preseason camp begins in August. "Nate's in great shape, he looks great," Dorrell said to Johnson. "He's got a great mindset about where he's going, he feels good about where the rehab situation is for him...He's going to be ready to go for sure by the fall before we start training camp." - Daily Camera

Nate Landman is apparently tackling rehab with the same juice he uses to bring down opposing tailbacks. CU Buffs football coach Karl Dorrell told the Pac-12 Network on Tuesday morning that Landman, his star middle linebacker, is "ahead of schedule" in his recovery from a rupture to his right Achilles tendon suffered last December in the home finale vs. Utah. "He's doing really well," Dorrell said of Landman, who had surgery last Dec. 15. "He's excited."

While Landman, who elected to return for a fifth season rather than enter the NFL draft, won't participate in spring drills, Dorrell noted that the 6-foot-3 California native "will be doing some stuff on the side … he'll be pushing the envelope as much as he can without driving the doctors crazy." Landman was a first-team All-Pac-12 selection last season after leading CU in tackles (53) and solo stops (39) over five contests. The Buffs are slated to open spring practice March 29. - Denver Post

Nate Landman will remain with the Buffaloes for another year. On Tuesday night, Colorado's star inside linebacker announced on Instagram that he will return to CU for the 2021 season. He was eyeing the NFL Draft before rupturing his right Achilles' tendon against Utah on Dec. 12, but will take advantage of the NCAA granting all players an extra year of eligibility because of the coronavirus pandemic. A senior from Danville, Calif., Landman was an All-American candidate this year and earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors the past two seasons.   2020 ALL-PAC-12 CONFERENCE FIRST TEAM: LB Nate Landman, Sr., Colorado,...Landman becomes the first Buffalo to repeat as a conference first-teamer since CU joined the league in 2011, and is the first to do overall since offensive tackle Nate Solder garnered first-team All-Big 12 honors in 2009 and 2010. He's the first inside linebacker to repeat in successive years since Matt Russell was All-Big Eight in 1995 and then All-Big 12 in 1996. He led the team in tackles with 61 (49 solo), the third straight year he topped CU's stat sheet in tackles, joining fellow inside 'backers Barry Remington (1984-86) and Greg Biekert (1990-92) as the only players in school history to lead the Buffs three straight seasons. - Colorado Football

The heart of Colorado's defense stopped on Saturday. Late in the first half of the Buffaloes' 38-21 loss to Utah at Folsom Field, inside linebacker Nate Landman went down with an injury, and he will miss the rest of the season. It was, perhaps, the last time Landman will play for the Buffaloes (4-1, 3-1 Pac-12). Head coach Karl Dorrell said Landman has "an ankle injury, a lower leg injury," and added, "I think he's going to have an MRI, but he's down for at least the rest of the season this fall." Arguably the best player on the team, Landman was chasing Utah tight end Cole Fotheringham on a passing play late in the first half and went down without any contact.

As trainers tended to him, he was in noticeable pain and grabbing onto one trainer. Landman spent the second half on the sidelines in a walking boot on his right leg and moving around on a scooter. "Any one of our brothers, if they went down, it hurts us," receiver Brenden Rice said. "Everyone, you see the locker room was in shock." A senior from Danville, Calif., Landman is one of the leaders of the team and one of the best linebackers in the country. - Daily Camera

Shortly after Colorado defensive coordinator Tyson Summers got the call on Thanksgiving Day that the Buffaloes had less than 48 hours to prepare for a new opponent, he showed up to the office. Senior linebacker Nate Landman was a step ahead of him. "He's already there, watching film, getting ready, asking questions," Summers said. "From a coaching standpoint, that's what you love. You love the guys that eat it up and enjoy it, that want to understand every part of it. He knew his preparation needed to be correct in a short amount of time."

During a 20-10 win against San Diego State on Saturday - a game scheduled two days earlier after Southern California canceled because of COVID-19 cases - Landman registered a career-high three sacks, as well as 11 tackles and a pass breakup. It was the latest great performance in a stellar career and an exceptional season, and the honors are rolling in. On Sunday, Landman was named Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week. On Monday, he earned Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second time this season. Also on Monday, Landman was named one of 16 semifinalists for the Butkus Award, presented annually to the best linebacker in the country. - Daily Camera

Colorado linebacker Nate Landman wasn't being flippant, just setting the record straight. Asked about the defense surrendering 10 points and how this could be a much-needed confidence boost, he pointed out his side of the ball only surrendered a field goal. Fair enough. Landman led a stellar defensive showing to help Colorado hold off San Diego State 20-10 on Saturday night as the Buffaloes remain undefeated under new coach Karl Dorrell. "(The defense) came to play today," said Buffaloes tailback Jarek Broussard, who rushed for 124 yards. "They honestly won us the game."

Colorado's offense did its part, too, with Sam Noyer running for a score and throwing for another in building an early 14-0 lead. He did throw an interception, though, that Aztecs cornerback Darren Hall returned for a 57-yard score. Hence, Landman's assessment. "All in all, I'm glad we were able to pull out the win. It was led by our defense," Dorrell said. "Good teams find ways to win, right?" Not bad for short notice. The Buffaloes and Aztecs didn't find out they were meeting on the field until Thanksgiving Day. Colorado (3-0, 2-0 Pac-12) was originally scheduled to travel to No. 19 USC for a Pac-12 South showdown, but it was canceled due to COVID-19 issues within the Trojans' program. - Colorado/AP College Football

Arguably CU's best player, Landman will fill a key role in the Buffaloes having success during the 2020 season - if there is a season. The coronavirus pandemic has created doubt about the season even happening, but Landman is gearing up to be a better version of himself just in case. "Just being more consistent with my game (is a focus)," he said. "Towards the beginning of the (2019) season, I struggled with some missed tackles and pass coverage. It was never the mental game that affected me; sometimes it was the physical game, whether it was sore shoulders or anything like that."

Landman has recorded 260 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, six sacks and three interceptions over the past two seasons. He's a big hitter with a nose for the ball, which was evident during his brief appearance late in the 2017 season. Where Landman has taken perhaps the biggest strides is in leadership. He embraced a leadership role last season and is intent on becoming even better in that regard this year. "(I'm working on) being more accessible to the team and being that kind of leader to where I can lead by example and if guys are hurting they can come to me, and being a guy that someone can lean on," he said. "I want to help create more leaders on the team. I don't think leaders always have to be seniors. Helping create a freshman leader that can lead that freshman class and someone they can look to for advice." - Daily Camera

2020 BRONKO NAGURSKI TROPHY PRESEASON WATCH LIST: LB Nate Landman, Colorado,...Landman, who was on the watch list last season for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, becomes the first CU player to earn a mention on the watch list twice. Landman would be the first CU player to win the award. Beginning in 1993, CU's lone semifinalist for the award was Matt Russell in 1996, the same year he won the Butkus Award. This is the fourth watch list for Landman, having been named to the Butkus Award watch list on Monday and the Chuck Bednarik Award watch list last week.

In June, he was named to the Lott IMPACT Trophy watch list. He was named third-team Preseason All-America by Phil Steele, which also named him first-team Preseason All-Pac-12 along with Athlon. Landman is returning for his senior season and has earned various levels of All-America and All-Pac-12 honors each of the last two years. He became just the sixth CU player to record 250 tackles in adjoining seasons (123 in 2018 and 137 in 2019), and he's the two-time defending defensive MVP for the Buffs. - Colorado Football

2020 BUTKUS AWARD PRESEASON WATCH LIST: Nate Landman, Colorado,...Landman, who was on the watch list last season for the Butkus Award, becomes just the second CU player to hit the watch list twice, joining Jordon Dizon from 2006-07. Landman is looking to become the third Buff to win the award, alongside Alfred Williams in 1990 and Matt Russell in 1996. Ted Johnson (1994) and Dizon (2007) were runners-up for the award.

At the conclusion of the 2019 football season, Nate Landman took some time to contemplate his future. Colorado's standout inside linebacker considered entering the NFL Draft, but ultimately elected to stay in Boulder for his senior season. "At the end of the day, we thought that the best option for me was to come back and improve my draft stock this year," Landman said this winter. "I kind of feel like I have some unfinished business at CU, too." Concerns about the spread of the new coronavirus have created uncertainty about the 2020 football season, but if and when the Buffaloes get back on the field this year, Landman's decision to return will be monumental for the defense. Although sports have been shut down for the time being and stay-at-home orders have been issued around the country, CU continues to prepare for the season and Buffzone is previewing each position group for the Buffs. In this installment, we look at the inside linebackers - a position loaded with experience and talent. Led by Landman, who was voted first-team All-Pac-12 by coaches last season, the Buffaloes return all of their inside linebackers. Landman has started all 24 games over the past two years and he's led the Buffs in tackles both seasons. One of the best inside linebackers in the Pac-12, if not the country, Landman has also stepped up as a team leader and is arguably the heart and soul of CU's defense. After posting 123 tackles in 2018, Landman racked up 137 last season - 68 more than anyone else on the team. He finished with 112 solo tackles, which ranks as the second-best single-season total in CU history. - Daily Camera

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis on Friday signed a bill designed to help college athletes in the state profit off their names, Images and likenesses, the governor's office said. The law is set to take effect Jan. 1, 2023, putting it on the same schedule as a law that California approved last fall. The Florida legislature last week sent a name, image and likeness bill to Gov. Ron DeSantis, who had announced his support for such a measure. Amid the coronavirus crisis, Polis signed the bill administratively, meaning there was no audience for this final step. The governor's spokesman, Conor Cahill, said the office had no further immediate comment. The bill passed the state House of Representatives just over two weeks ago by a 55-9 margin. It was approved Feb. 12 by a unanimous vote in the state Senate, where it originated. Similar bills are pending in more than 20 other states, including Illinois and New York. - Daily Camera

Newly hired Colorado football coach Karl Dorrell will keep four assistants from the previous staff. Among those sticking around Boulder, Colorado, will be Darrin Chiaverini, who was named interim coach after Mel Tucker left for Michigan State and before Dorrell was brought on board. The other coaches who were retained include Darian Hagan, Brian Michalowski and Tyson Summers. Their exact roles have yet to be determined. Dorrell plans to name six more assistant coaches by early next week. The assistant coaching positions figure to be more lucrative in 2020. Colorado athletic director Rick George is proposing a salary pool of $3.8 million for the assistants, which is up from nearly $3.2 million for Tucker's staff. - AP College Football

The University of Colorado has reached into the NFL ranks again to find their head football coach, luring Karl Dorrell back to Boulder from the Miami Dolphins. Athletic director Rich Geoge hired Dorrell on Sunday, two weeks after Mel Tucker bolted for Michigan State and 72 hours after Dorrell was promoted to assistant head coach of the Dolphins after one season as receivers coach. Dorrell, 56, who went 35-27 as UCLA's head coach from 2003-07, will be formally introduced Monday. Tucker, who had a decade of experience in the NFL ranks, went 5-7 in his one season in Boulder after arriving from the University of Georgia in December 2018. Dorrell brings 16 years of coaching experience in the college ranks, including 2003-07 as head coach at his alma mater, UCLA, and 14 years in the NFL, including three seasons in Denver as Mike Shanahan's wide receivers coach in the early 2000s. - AP College Football
