Hunter Johnson stood just inside a tunnel at Memorial Stadium, admitting to some feelings of déjà vu as he completed another practice with his old-and-new team. Then Clemson coach Dabo Swinney walked by, repeating one of his new favorite words. "Boomer ang...boomerang..." Swinney loves it. In the era of the transfer portal, when players are hopping from one school to another, Clemson made a rare decision to take a player from another university. But he took Johnson, a sixth-year quarterback who spent f our years at Northwestern after a freshman season at Clemson. He left, then came back.When the former five-star prospect transferred in the summer of 2018, he made what felt like a very permanent decision. Johnson was leaving behind what felt like - and turned out to be - a championship team. That was hard. But the era of Trevor Lawrence was dawning. Johnson loved Clemson, but he needed a fresh start. So he went out the door, never expecting to come back. He didn't know what the next four years a t Northwestern would hold, dealing with concussions, knee injuries, and a pandemic. It's only because of the pandemic - and the NCAA granting athletes an additional year of eligibility - that Johnson can wear a Clemson uniform again. Former Clemson quarterback Hunter Johnson is the new starter at Northwestern. The fifth-year senior won the position during fall camp over a QB group that included housemate Ryan Hilinski, who transferred in from the University of South Carolina in Decem ber. The Wildcats confirmed the news on their Twitter page. "I've seen a lot of football, which is good, so that's, I think that's always been an advantage for me that I've been through a lot of football system and terminology," Johnson told reporters Au g. 9. "Year Two with (offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Mike Bajakian) is great...I'm definitely feeling more confident coming around this year." Johnson left Clemson during the summer of 2018 following a freshman season where he threw for 234 yards and two touchdowns behind Kelly Bryant, who transferred a few games into 2018 after Trevor Lawrence took over the starting job.Johnson, a former five-star recruit, sat out his sophomore season at Northwestern due to transfer rules. He appea red in six games with five starts during his junior campaign for the Wildcats. During that time, he recorded 432 yards and a score while rushing for 64 yards and a TD. "I think today versus when I first got here, I think I've matured a lot," Johnson said . After Northwestern's 2019 season, Mike Bajakian got to work. Bajakian, who was named the Wildcats' new offensive coordinator in December, proceeded to watch every play of NU's 3-9 campaign. Featuring prominently in the footage was Hunter Johnson. On film , the former five-star recruit's struggles were well documented. They ranged from committing three turnovers - including a game-clinching fumble - in the season opener at Stanford to being benched in a three-touchdown loss to Michigan State after throwin g for just 88 yards.Johnson also suffered a knee injury against Wisconsin, which was re-aggravated in a game versus Indiana. A sack by Minnesota safety Antoine Winfield Jr. left him sidelined for the remainder of the season. But things have change d since 2019, when the Clemson transfer threw for 432 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions with a 46.3 completion percentage. Bajakian noticed Johnson's improvement this year, from the start of spring camp to the summer. He threw with consistency and competency. He made better on-field decisions. Wrigley Field won't host the scheduled Nov. 7 football game between Northwestern and Wisconsin because of COVID-19 concerns. The decision was announced Wednesday after the schools consulted with the Chicago Cubs, state and local authorities and the Big T en "in consideration of the myriad challenges presented by the coronavirus pandemic," Northwestern said in a statement. A team spokesman said it's "safe to assume" the game would take place at Northwestern's Ryan Field instead, although uncertainty about the college football season looms. NU has a comically crowded QB room, with Indiana transfer Peyton Ramsey a godsend and the enormous favorite to start. Ramsey put up terrific numbers in 32 games as a Hoosier, improving his completion percentage each season from 65.4 to 66 to 68. He's ath letic and has terrific leadership qualities. Contrast that with the group of NU quarterbacks who were absolutely abysmal last season, the worst in the nation. Hunter Johnson will push Ramsey if he bounces back from a trying season during which his mother was treated for breast cancer. Andrew Marty is NU's Tim Tebow, a powerful, gutsy, run-first QB who ran through Illinois (111 yards) in the season finale. TJ Green, who beat out Johnson and Smith before suffering a season-ending foot surgery, will return for a sixth season. - Chicago Tribune

Hunter Johnson doesn't want to be afraid to make mistakes anymore. After having a 2019 season to forget at Northwestern, the quarterback said he isn't worried about all of the game-ending injuries, the losses and the interceptions that defined his sophom ore campaign. "There's good years and bad years," Johnson said. "I'm just moving on, everything about it. There's obviously some things I'm going to take from it, but you can't move forward looking back. I'm not looking back." New offensive coordinator M ike Bajakian is helping Johnson turn the page. After the highly-touted transfer from Clemson finished last season with just one touchdown and four interceptions in six games, Bajakian had a simple message for Johnson when he was hired to coach the Wildca ts. Bajakian wants Johnson to be more decisive, even if he's wrong. "If I think I know the answer, (Bajakian) wants me to yell it out," Johnson said. "Be confident, and if you're wrong, then he'll let you know. But he'd rather us go for it and be wrong t han just go through the motions."Coach Pat Fitzgerald admitted he needs to do a better job helping Johnson be more confident during the season. Johnson felt pressure all last year as the assumed replacement to Clayton Thorson, the winningest quart erback in NU history. The Indiana native left all three of his final games of the 2019 season with an injury. His sophomore season ended with a 10-yard sack against No. 10 Minnesota in November, and Johnson finished the year with a 46.3 completion percen tage. "What comes with that locomotive is the hype," Fitzgerald said. "It's unrealistic to expect a lot right away because it's new relationships, a new offense, new school. Northwestern has parted ways with offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Mick McCall after a miserable season. Coach Pat Fitzgerald noted that McCall helped the Wildcats through nine postseason appearances and four bowl wins in 12 seasons, a tenure that included six all-Big Ten quarterbacks, including three who went to the NFL. Fitzgerald announced the move a day after Northwestern (3-9, 1-8 Big Ten) picked up its first conference win with a win at Illinois in the season finale. Hunter Johnson only needed a few minutes to wash a bad start out of his mind. He and his Northwestern teammates can use all the confidence they can get with a huge Big Ten test looming. Johnson threw his first career touchdown pass and ran in another Sat urday afternoon to lead Northwestern past UNLV, 30-14. Drake Anderson ran for 141 yards and a touchdown to help the Wildcats win their home opener. "That first drive was a big confidence-booster for all of us today," said Johnson, who ended the first dri ve of his second career start with a 1-yard touchdown run. "It was a good momentum booster."Johnson and the Wildcats' offense needed the boost after a lackluster season opener. Charles Williams had scoring runs of 65 and 37 yards in the first half and ended the day with 144 on 16 carries as the Rebels (1-2) dropped their second straight. Up 16-14 at the break, Northwestern (1-1) gave itself some breathing room late in the third quarter when Johnson found a streaking J.J. Jefferson for a 50-yard t ouchdown. The sophomore quarterback was 12 for 25 for 165 yards with an interception. Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald believes new starting quarterback Hunter Johnson will bounce back quickly from his struggles in the season opener. The redshirt sophomore will get his first opportunity on Saturday when the Wildcats (0-1) host UNLV (1-1) in the home opener at Ryan Field. "He's going to get better just like every player does through experience," Fitzgerald said. "He's going to get better. We have 100 million percent confidence in that, if that's a word." Johnson was hyped as the best qua rterback prospect the program ever has had after transferring from Clemson a year ago, but his debut was underwhelming. He completed just 6 of 17 passes for 55 yards with two interceptions in a 17-7 loss at Stanford two weeks ago.Fitzgerald chalks that up to a combination of rust and inexperience. It was Johnson's first college start and the first time he had played in a game since mop-up duty for Clemson in a 38-3 rout of Miami in the ACC championship game on Dec. 2, 2017. "It's like the chicken or the egg, which comes first, confidence or experience?" the coach said. "I would say both. I think you have to be pretty confidence. Sometimes you have to fake it to make it." Johnson expects to play much better this week.
