Jordan Mason, Georgia Tech, Player News
|
Georgia Tech's running back depth chart took another hit Thursday when Jordan Mason announced he will enter the NFL draft. Mason, who was the Yellow Jackets' second-leading rusher with 439 yards, announced his decision on his Twitter account. Mason, from Gallatin, Tennessee, was a redshirt junior this season. Georgia Tech lost one of its top players when leading rusher Jahmyr Gibbs, who finished third in the nation in all-purpose yards, announced on Nov. 29 he will enter the transfer portal. Gibbs made his announcement two days after Georgia Tech completed a 3-9 season with its sixth consecutive loss, a 45-0 drubbing against Georgia. A third Georgia Tech running back, Jamious Griffin, also has entered the transfer portal after rushing for 23 yards in o nly four games. Griffin has three years of eligibility remaining. - AP College Football

A year ago, the Georgia Tech ranked at the bottom of the ACC in total offense. That could change this year with the development of three running backs who might be good enough to expand the team's playbook and offer more options for offensive coordinator Dave Patenaudee. The trio: junior Jordan Mason, the team's leading rusher last season; sophomore Jamious Griffin, the prize of the 2018 signing class; and freshman Jahmyr Gibbs, the prize recruit from 2019. Mason will likely start, but the other two wil l get plenty of opportunities. "That group is really good," Patenaude said. "I don't see everybody, but I'm not trading anybody for our top three guys."Mason (6-foot-1, 218 pounds) has come a long way since his redshirt freshman season, when the m edia guide erroneously listed his name as Jordan Ponchez-Mason. Turns out Ponchez is his middle name and not part of a hyphenated surname. Regardless of that typo, which both amused and confused Mason, he rushed for 659 yards and suffered only one negati ve run. Mason started 12 games last season as a sophomore and rushed for 899 yards and seven touchdowns. That included a career-high effort of 141 yards against both Miami and N.C. State. He was named third-team All-ACC. "He has a great feel for what we' re doing," Patenaude said. "He runs downhill, he's gotten better and he's in great shape. Last year he was able to make people miss; he had one of the highest miss-rates in the country. He's real good at that." - Macon Telegraph
