 Coney Durr, Minnesota, Player News

  08/17/21 - CB Coney DurrrSr/2022, Minnesota, 5-10, 200 (DS#83 CB) + More +

Going into the first week of Gophers football training camp, Coney Durr tweeted to his former college teammate Rashod Bateman about how he missed "going at it" with him in practice. Bateman is a rookie wide receiver with the Baltimore Ravens. Durr could have pursued his NFL dreams, but he is entering his sixth season as a Gophers defensive back. He says he got asked ad nauseam during the offseason about why he returned to college. "I feel like last year was basically not really a real year," Durr said. "So, I felt like coming back with the same group of guys. Most of the guys are back. Just competing for a Big Ten championship, ultimately a national championship would kind of wrap off my career."

The 5-foot-10, 190-pound native of Baton Rouge, La., was a legitimate NFL prospect as a three-year starter with a combined 93 tackles and four interceptions since 2018, when he came back from a knee injury. In the Gophers' final game in 2020, Durr recorded four tackles and an interception in the Dec. 19 loss against Wisconsin. Fellow senior starting cornerback Benjamin St-Juste declared for the draft the following day. Durr wondered if he should make the same decision, but he posted on social media soon afterwards that he wasn't ready to leave due to "unfinished business." "It was really tough," Durr said. "It was kind of stressful, but ultimately I made the right decision." - Minneapolis Star Tribune

Rashod Bateman opted out for the second time a couple weeks ago, making two Gophers declared for the upcoming draft. And there might be more to come. Gophers coach P.J. Fleck has said he expects "most" of the seniors to return with their extra year of eligibility from the pandemic. Cornerback Phil Howard and receiver Clay Geary are two that have stated their intention to return. There are 17 seniors in total this season. "While the NFL is my ultimate goal, I'm not ready to leave Minnesota just yet," Durr wrote on social media. "We have unfinished business." The redshirt senior has been an All-Big Ten honorable mention two years running. This season, he made 29 tackles, five pass-breakups and an interception in the end zone at Wisconsin. - Minneapolis Star Tribune

Coney Durr has skin in the game. After a breakout junior year, the Gophers cornerback would have every reason to hope there will be college football this fall. But even with a personal stake, Durr just doesn't see how it can happen amid the COVID-19 pandemic. "How does fall camp even happen?" Durr tweeted Thursday. "110 guys around each other 12 hours a day for a month straight. Man, it's tough times right now." While the Big Ten announced it plans to play a conference-only schedule this fall, conference commissioner Kevin Warren included the caveat that there might not be a season at all. Major League Soccer restarted with a tournament in Orlando, Fla., this week, and pro baseball, hockey and basketball are gearing up to play over the next few weeks. College sports still has hills to climb.

Dr. Zach Binney, an epidemiologist at Oxford College of Emory University in Atlanta, said programs like the Gophers' can't create "bubbles" on campus the way the NBA, MLS and WNBA are in Florida. "These are young kids that have a lot of interactions outside of the athletics department," Binney said. "They are not just living at home with their families. They are living in dorms. They are interacting with people in classes, outside of classes. Some of them, maybe, want to go to parties - I know that will come as a shock to some people. "There is a lot of contact that takes place on a college campus. I don't know the degree to which you can tamp those down." - Pioneer Press
