A couple of weeks ago, Colorado coaches let players know that Mustafa Johnson might be coming back to the team. On Tuesday, head coach Karl Dorrell said Johnson has been cleared to start practicing with the Buffaloes, although he didn't say when the vete ran defensive lineman will be eligible to play. "It's huge," linebacker Nate Landman said. "He was one of our best leaders last year and a super productive guy on the field, a great leader off the field. "We're so excited to have him back and he means a lot to this team. He's a huge leader on that D-line and having him back is nothing but great for this program." Johnson elected in January to skip his final season of eligibility and enter the NFL Draft. He signed with an agent, but went undrafted and wa s unable to land a free-agent contract with an NFL team. He did receive a tryout with the New York Jets but was not signed.He has been granted a waiver to return to CU and play his final season but has to go through practice time and serve a suspe nsion because he did sign with an agent. When BuffZone reported last week that Johnson was coming back, sources told BuffZone that Johnson could make his debut on Oct. 2 against Southern California at Folsom Field. On Tuesday, Dorrell did not talk about a specific return date. "He will start the practice regimen," Dorrell said. "We just got clearance today, actually, about him being able to start practice. There's an acclimatization period that he needs to go through that a lot of our players when they begin practice have to do. There's also part of the stipulation of his reinstatement that he's got to serve as well. "He's just going to get himself in shape and he can help our team be better...He's going to have some time to get himself in shape. And h e's excited. Our team's excited he's back and I'm excited. We feel he's going to really help us when we get into the meat of our season." - Daily Camera

One of Colorado's best defensive linemen in recent years is coming back. Mustafa Johnson, who elected in January to skip his final season of eligibility and enter the NFL Draft, has been granted a waiver to return to CU. He was reinstated to the roster o n Wednesday but is not yet eligible to play. According to a BuffZone source, Johnson must serve a suspension and CU has a few hurdles to clear in order to get him eligible. It's possible, according to a source, that Johnson could make his season debut on Oct. 2 against Southern California at Folsom Field.After declaring for the draft, Johnson signed with an agent, but went undrafted and was unable to land a free-agent contract with an NFL team. Mustafa Johnson knows he doesn't have the prototypical size that the NFL is looking for in defensive linemen. Many of the top line prospects in this year's draft class are between 6-foot-3 and 6-foot-6, with many of them north of 300 pounds. Johnson, a f ormer Colorado star, measured at 6-feet, 280 pounds during the Buffs' annual pro timing day on Monday. "What I lack in size I make up for in versatility and how I play," Johnson said. "I don't play small. I play big." The most dominant defensive lineman at CU in recent years, Johnson, a former junior college transfer, racked up 30 tackles for loss and 16 sacks in 27 career games with the Buffs. Despite playing less than two-and-a-half years worth of games with the Buffs - in large part because of the CO VID-19 pandemic shortening the 2020 season - Johnson ranks top 20 in CU history in tackles for loss and top 15 in sacks. Mustafa Johnson always knew he would be going to the NFL. In his mind, it wasn't a matter of if, but when. Now he knows. "It's my time," Colorado's standout defensive end told BuffZone. On Friday, Johnson announced that he will forgo his final year of el igibility with the Buffaloes and enter the NFL Draft, scheduled for April 29-May 1. Although he was a senior this season, Johnson could have come back to CU for the 2021 campaign because the NCAA granted all players an extra year of eligibility due to th e coronavirus pandemic. Johnson, who turns 22 on Feb. 16, seriously considered a return, but decided to pursue his dream. Johnson hopes to become just the second CU defensive lineman drafted since 2007, joining Jordan Carrell, a seventh-round pick of the Dallas Cowboys in 2017. Recent defensive line coaches at Colorado have had to deal with a lack of depth, experience and high-end talent. Chris Wilson doesn't have those issues, but the Buffaloes' first-year defensive line coach is hoping intense competition makes one of CU's st rengths even better. Hired in February, Wilson took over a group that returns three starters - senior Mustafa Johnson, junior Terrance Lang and sophomore Jalen Sami - along with several others who gained valuable experience in 2019. All of them will figh t for starting jobs as the Buffs gear up for the Nov. 7 opener against UCLA. "We've got really good talent here. My job is to make sure we develop them. I like the group we've got, I like their competitive edge; they're working really hard every day. The biggest thing is how we're transitioning from where we were a year ago to now. There's a lot of good carryover. I'm excited about the group."Mustafa Johnson has 13 sacks in his career with Colorado. Leading the group is Johnson, who has been a tw o-year starter and one of the most disruptive defensive linemen at CU in the past decade. Although he dealt with some injuries last season, Johnson, a former junior college transfer, has 107 tackles, 13 sacks and 23 tackles for loss in his first two seas ons with the Buffs. Wilson compared Johnson to Brandon Graham, a 2016 All-Pro that Wilson coached with the Philadelphia Eagles. "I'm not saying he's Brandon Graham, but he's got that kind of diversity," said Wilson, who coached the Buffs' defensive line from 2000-04 under head coach Gary Barnett. For three months, Mustafa Johnson was unable to use the exceptional workout facilities at the University of Colorado. The Buffaloes' 6-foot-2, 290-pound senior defensive lineman wasn't going to let the coronavirus pandemic stop his progress, though. "I m iss (football) a lot," he said. "I miss the whole hitting aspect, but I really haven't skipped a beat (in workouts). I've been running and doing all my training, even with all this COVID that's going on." While concerns about the spread of COVID-19 cance led spring practices and forced Johnson and athletes around the country to work out on their own, the Buffs are still scheduled to begin their season on Sept. 5 at Colorado State. Voluntary workouts at CU began on June 15 and the NCAA Division I Council has approved a plan that allows preseason camp to begin Aug. 7. If practices and games are held, Johnson plans to be ready.A former junior college transfer, Johnson had an exceptional first season with the Buffs, in 2018. He earned first-team All- Pac-12 honors from the Associated Press after leading the conference with 8.5 sacks, leading the Buffs with 18 tackles for loss and racking up 73 tackles. In the past 22 seasons, no CU defensive lineman has had more tackles in a season. Last year, an ank le injury limited him to nine games and fewer than 20 snaps in two other games. He finished with 34 tackles and 4.5 sacks. In preparing for his senior season, Johnson said he feels 100 percent healthy. "I've been out running and playing basketball and do ing all kinds of stuff," he said. "I'm good now." The Buffs need him to be, although he's not carrying the load by himself. - Daily Camera
