The 2022 football season officially ends Sunday with the playing of Super LVII. One day later, the Georgia State Panthers will be back on the field for the start of 2023 spring practice. Monday morning's workout is the first of 15 spring practices over the next four weeks. Spring practice will culminate with the annual Spring Game, scheduled for Thursday, March 9 at 6:30 p.m. at Center Parc Stadium. Admission and parking are free, and fans can register for free tickets here.

Head coach Shawn Elliott, entering his seventh season, explained the decision to move up spring practice to the earliest start date in program history. "We talked about what we needed to do to become a bigger, stronger, faster football team, and our new strength and conditioning coach, Mike Sirignano, thought it would be really beneficial to move spring practice up," Elliott said. "That will give us give us a few extra weeks on the back end to continuously train." When asked what would be the focus this spring, Elliott didn't mention schemes or personnel. "Fighting through adversity, knowing how to put away opponents, and learning to strain to finish," he immediately answered. "This is going to be a physical spring practice, it's going to be competitive spring practice, it's going to be a tough spring practice." The Panthers return six starters on offense, including quarterback Darren Grainger, and six on defense. Other top returnees include running back Marcus Carroll, receiver Robert Lewis, tackle Travis Glover, defensive ends Javon Denis and Jeffery Clark, and linebackers Blake Carroll, Jordan Veneziale and Jontrey Hunter. - Georgia State Football

Darren Grainger ran for a touchdown and threw for another as Georgia State repelled Army on Saturday for a 31-14 win, the Panthers' first of the season. After a Michael Hayes field goal opened the scoring, a shanked punt gave the ball back to the Panthers (1-4) at the Army 38 with Grainger scoring on a 13-yard keeper. Jamyest Williams' 33-yard burst up the middle was good for a 17-0 halftime lead after Army (1-3) turned the ball over on downs. After Army closed within three in the second half, the Panthers scored two late touchdowns. Army scored on its first drive of the second half on Tyhier Tyler's 1-yard run. A Panthers field-goal attempt went off the right upright and Tyler scored on a 5-yard keeper on the first play of the fourth quarter.

Army got the ball back after a fumble but the Black Knights were stopped on fourth-and-goal from the Georgia State 1. The Panthers had to punt from their end zone but Army, after taking over from its 45, failed on a fake punt on fourth-and-11 with the Panthers then clinching the win on Grainger's 57-yard touchdown pass to Ja'Cyais Credle with three minutes left. Georgia State's Tucker Gregg added a 56-yard touchdown, his school-record 20th rushing score to break a tie with Tra Barnett (2016-19). Gainger threw for 157 yards and ran for another 48. Gregg rushed for 124 yards on 16 carries and Williams had 106 yards on 12.   Darren Grainger and Georgia State saved their best for the last game of the season - and especially for a thoroughly dominating third quarter. Grainger passed for 203 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 122 yards and a fourth TD to lead Georgia State to a 51-20 victory over Ball State in the Camellia Bowl on Saturday. The Panthers (8-5) finished with their seventh win in eight games, dominated the lone bowl played on Christmas Day and set a season record for wins. Coach Shawn Elliott called it "the best performance Georgia State football has had this year." "I think we finished Christmas Day with one of the best presents we could have ever asked for and that's a commanding, dominating win," Elliott said. It was the first time the program had won back-to-back bowl games.

His team was up 20-13 at halftime but scored the next 31 points. Grainger completed 15 of 19 passes and carried 11 times, including a play fake midway through the third quarter when he scampered 34 yards untouched into the end zone. It was the first 100-yard rushing game of his career, and he was named the game MVP. Ball State (6-7) couldn't summon up many big plays after Drew Plitt's 56-yard touchdown bomb to Jayshon Jackson for an early lead. The Cardinals finished with a losing record a year after coach Mike Neu led his alma mater to its first Mid-American Conference championship since 1996. - Georgia State/AP College Football

Darren Grainger threw for two scores and the defense came up up with a scoop and score and Georgia State overwhelmed Troy 37-10 on Saturday. Grainger threw a 13-yard touchdown to Aubry Payne with 7:52 left in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead. Early in the second he tossed a 26-yard score to Sam Pinckney for a two-score lead before the teams traded field goals to end the half. Noel Ruiz, who kicked field goals of 43, 49 and 50 yards, booted from 49 shortly after the break and Georgia State (7-5, 6-2 Sun Belt Conference) led 20-3. The Panthers broke it open on Troy's ensuing drive when Blake Carroll broke through the line and drilled Troy quarterback Gunnar Watson to cause a fumble that Jamil Muhammad returned 72 yards for touchdown and a 24-point advantage. Watson threw for 287 yards and B.J. Smith scored the Trojans (5-7, 3-5) lone touchdown. Georgia State is bowl eligible for the third-straight year and is the only FBS team in the nation to play four road games against ranked opponents this season. - Georgia State/AP College Football

Georgia State's Darren Grainger had the homecoming he'd dreamed about all season. Grainger threw for 198 yards and two touchdowns only a few miles where he grew up as Georgia State won its first-ever game over a ranked opponent, defeating No. 22 Coastal Carolina 42-40 on Saturday. Nose tackle Thomas Gore wrapped up Coastal's Shermari Jones short of the goal line on a two-point conversion with just over a minute left to secure the win. "I had so much faith in my defense, I knew they'd get a big stop," Grainger said of those heart-stopping final moments. Grainger played in rec leagues in Conway and then at Conway High, only a short distance from the Coastal Carolina campus. He knew his family and friends would turn out and wanted to put on a show. Several fans wore blue T-shirts with Grainger's name and No. 3. By the end, Grainger's edginess turned to joy. "It feels good to be home," Grainger said. "It feels good to get a win over a ranked opponent." The Panthers (5-5, 3-3 Sun Belt Conference) had been 0-11 all-time against Top 25 teams and had lost all three times it had faced ranked opponents this season. The Panthers rallied in the fourth quarter to end that run of failure. "It takes 60 minutes and tonight it took every second of that," Georgia State coach Shawn Elliott said. Grainger threw a go-ahead touchdown and Tucker Gregg added his third scoring run after Georgia State blew a 28-16 lead in the second half to go up 42-34. - Georgia State/AP College Football

Charlotte took a 7-0 lead on Chris Reynolds' 36-yard scoring strike to Elijah Spencer midway through the second quarter.   Darren Grainger ran for one touchdown and threw for another as Furman crushed Charleston Southern, 46-13 in the season-opener Saturday. Grainger, a redshirt freshman, played in four games and started against Elon a year ago before earning the starting job. Picked to finish second in the Southern Conference and ranked in two different Football Championship Subdivision polls, Furman kicked off its season at home for the first time since 2015 with its first-ever meeting with Charleston Southern.

The loss spoiled the head coaching debut of Charleston Southern's Autry Denson, who became just the fifth head coach in Buccaneers history in January. Jamey Chadwell, who guided CSU past The Citadel in the 2013 opener, is the only coach to win his debut at the school. Grainger capped a six-play, 46-yard drive by scoring from the 4 for the game's first touchdown. Devin Abrams and Devin Wynn each had first-half touchdown runs as the Paladins held a 24-6 advantage at intermission. - AP College Football
