The Las Vegas Raiders' selection of Ohio State cornerback Damon Arnette with the 19th pick of the 2020 NFL Draft came as one of the first big surprises of the event's opening night. According to Raiders general manager Mike Mayock, the Raiders felt a sen se of urgency to pick the second team All-Big Ten corner while they had the chance. They turned down trade offers from teams wanting to move up to 19 because they wanted Arnette. "Did I think we could move down and maybe still get him? Maybe - but we did n't want to lose him," Mayock told reporters who cover the Raiders. Arnette was one of the few first-round picks who did not have cameras in their home for reaction shots as part of the NFL's virtual draft, necessitated by coronavirus protocols. That may be because most analysts did not consider him even a late first-round selection. One day earlier, Ohio State defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs had predicted Arnette could surprise with his draft selection. Arnette talked at the NFL Scouting Combi ne in February about how his underdog status had motivated him throughout his career and into the draft process. That some felt he was a surprise pick Thursday night fed into that narrative. "Like when y'all asked me, 'Are you surprised that you went in the first round?' I'm not," Arnette told the Raiders' beat reporters. "Certain people might be surprised because I'm always the underdog, but I know what I become when I step out there on the field regardless of what someone says about it." - Cleveland P lain Dealer

Every year there's a surprise in the first round and this year, Las Vegas Raiders General Manager Mike Mayock wanted to catch everyone by surprise. After selecting Henry Ruggs III with the No. 12 overall pick, the Silver and Black went defense with the N o. 19 pick, selecting cornerback Damon Arnette out of Ohio State. For a lot of people this was a shock, but there are individuals who think he's a steal, including a member of the division-rival Denver Broncos. Arnette originally wanted to enter the 2019 NFL Draft, but after consulting with his coaches at Ohio State and a conversation with NFL Hall of Famer Cris Carter, he decided to remain as a Buckeye for one more season.Back for his senior season, Arnette played in 11 games, had 35 tackles, on e interception, and eight passes defensed. Playing opposite from the No. 3 overall pick in the 2020 Draft, Jeff Okudah, Arnette finished his career with 140 tackles, four tackles for loss, five interceptions, 22 passes defensed, one touchdown, one fumble recovery, and two forced tackles. It's worth noting too, Arnette didn't allow more than one touchdown in any season of his collegiate career. - Raiders.com

The Buckeyes were everything they're cracked up to be. Fields was efficient, Dobbins proficient and the defense almost impenetrable. Ohio State scored in all three phases including a 96-yard interception return by Damon Arnette Jr. - the fifth-longest in school history. It could be an unbeatable combination. - AP College Football
