Arkansas football transfer safety Jalen Catalon committed to Texas. Catalon has battled injuries the past two seasons after earning First Team All-SEC honors in 2020. For a second consecutive season, Arkansas must play without its top defensive back in All-SEC safety Jalen Catalon. But as the Razorbacks showed last season in finishing 9-4 and this season in starting 2-0, the secondary has other players it can rely on. Catalon suffered what proved to be a season-ending shoulder injury early in the third quarter in this season's opener against Cincinnati that will require surgery. - Northwest Arkansas Times

Coach Sam Pittman provided no concrete updates on injured defensive backs Myles Slusher and Jalen Catalon on Saturday night. Slusher left the field with his right arm and shoulder being held by training staff after crashing into 6-5, 255-pound tight end Leonard Taylor on a 1-yard loss with 3:21 left in the second quarter. He was replaced by Jayden Johnson and Trent Gordon the rest of the game. Catalon appeared to injure his right shoulder while trying to tackle quarterback Ben Bryant in the backfield ea rly in the third quarter. The play did not appear to feature hard contact. Catalon came back after a period of tests and observation in the training room with ice on his right shoulder but he later removed it. "I was nervous about him there for a m inute," Pittman said of Slusher being down for a while. "But he's going to be fine, just wasn't able to come back today. I don't know about Catalon, to be honest with you. I really don't." Latavious Brini replaced Catalon to join safety Simeon Blair. "To us it was just next man up," Blair said of losing Catalon. "I mean, we do a lot of rotating, so I might be in there with Brini in practice all the time. It's not nothing new to me to play with Brini. - Northwest Arkansas Times

Arkansas has been picked to finish third in the SEC West in 2022 by media members who cover the conference. The Razorbacks are slotted to finish behind projected division and overall conference champion Alabama and Texas A&M in a poll released Friday at SEC Media Days in Atlanta. They are expected to finish ahead of Ole Miss, LSU, Mississippi State and Auburn, respectively. "We don't want to repeat last year," Arkansas safety Jalen Catalon said this week. "We want to be better. Like I said, last year wa s a great year, but I always say to the team that last year was last year. It's 2022. "Now it's a new year. Everybody is looking to start off right and try to make it to the top."The league's media predicted the Razorbacks to finish sixth last yea r. They went 9-4 overall, capping the season with a victory in the Outback Bowl, and 4-4 in SEC play to secure third in the division behind the Crimson Tide and Rebels. In 2020, Sam Pittman's first season leading Arkansas, the Razorbacks were picked last in the SEC West for the third consecutive year. "I've been a part of teams that have been 2-10," Arkansas linebacker Bumper Pool said this week. "After last season things completely changed, but it wasn't an overnight success. There's a lot of work that goes into it. "You talk about repeating (our) success, well, the work is what ultimately can determine the wins and losses. This team is extremely hard working." - Northwest Arkansas Times

Arkansas safety Jalen Catalon is itching to get back on the football field on Saturdays this fall. Last October, Razorbacks coach Sam Pittman announced after the team's home loss to Auburn that the captain would undergo season-ending shoulder surgery. He added that Catalon had been playing with "a tear" in the shoulder and a broken hand. An All-SEC selection in 2020, Catalon was a regular participant in Arkansas' spring drills this year, but routinely wore a green no-contact jersey as a precaution. Ther e should be little-to-no caution tape on the leader of the Razorbacks' secondary this fall. And he is eager to re-announce his arrival on the scene."For me, it's just putting myself back on the map," Catalon said June 21 at the Old Spice School of Swagger youth football camp on Arkansas' campus. "I'd say with being injured and stuff, a lot of people just kind of write you off, or people have little different narratives. "I supported my team, and through the process of it all it's been great." Des pite playing in only six games last fall, Catalon finished eighth on the team with 46 tackles. He, too, was tied for second with a pair of interceptions - both in the season opener against Rice - that resulted in 83 return yards. Catalon had nine-plus ta ckles in three games, including 11 vs. Rice, and showcased his versatility by adding 1.5 tackles for loss. His all-out style of play has led to production and accolades, and injury. - Northwest Arkansas Times

Safety Jalen Catalon will return to Arkansas for the 2022 season. Catalon, a third-year sophomore who underwent season-ending shoulder surgery in October, announced his return in a video he narrated that was posted to his social media accounts Tuesday. C atalon starred during the Razorbacks' 4-0 start to the season. He had 11 tackles and a pair of interceptions that set up touchdowns during the season-opening win over Rice, and combined for 17 tackles and 3 pass breakups in the following games against Te xas and Georgia Southern.Catalon had 99 tackles and 3 interceptions during his first full season playing for the Razorbacks in 2020 when he was a Freshman All-American and semifinalist for the Thorpe Award. Catalon, one of five team captains this season, is the third draft-eligible starter to announce his intention to return to Arkansas next season. Offensive linemen Ricky Stromberg and Dalton Wagner have said they will return for their fourth and sixth seasons, respectively. - Northwest Arkansas Times

University of Arkansas redshirt sophomore safety Jalen Catalon was on the second-team defense for The Associated Press All-American preseason teams announced Monday. Catalon had 99 tackles and three interceptions last season when he was a first-team choi ce on the AP's All-SEC team. He is the only Razorback on AP's two preseason teams. "Honestly, it's a blessing and I'm glad they picked me to be on it," Catalon said after Monday's practice while crediting his teammates and coaches. "But I'm not really go ing to pay too much mind to it. Just going to keep my eyes focused on the goal, and that's winning games and doing anything I can to make the team better."Catalon is one of 18 SEC players on the preseason teams from among nine SEC teams. "I think every conference has good football players," Catalon said. "It doesn't matter where you go. "But just from me, I might just be biased from playing in it, but as far as the SEC goes, every week you're going to play somebody that's a top guy when it comes to being drafted. You're always going to have consistent players, ones that are going to be top guys. That definitely shows based on that list itself." - Northwest Arkansas Times

After putting together the kind of season that has come along only once over the last decade-plus, Jalen Catalon had one thing on his mind during the offseason. That was to become a more consistent player, he said Tuesday following Arkansas' 10th practic e of the spring. Despite being the first SEC freshman since Tennessee's Eric Berry in 2007 to finish with at least 86 tackles and three interceptions, he's driven to be better. He totaled 99 tackles, broke up 4 passes and forced 2 fumbles although he mis sed the equivalent of one game in a 10-game All-SEC schedule due to targeting disqualifications.Catalon, too, was a first-team Freshman All-American by the Football Writers Association of America, the first Razorback to earn the nod since Dre Gree nlaw in 2015. But he has continued to work as if he was snubbed by voters. "I feel like I led more just by the way I play, but I realized that people pick up off my energy, and I feel like my words hold power to our defense and they listen," Catalon said . "I'm trying to be more of a leader as far as like me communicating that and showing my actions, and just being a consistent player to help my defense. "I feel like I made a lot of plays, but there were also a lot of plays I left out there last year in watching film with my coach this past year." - Northwest Arkansas Times

Coach Sam Pittman took issue on social media Monday when he felt an Arkansas fan seemed to suggest he wasn't taking up for safety Jalen Catalon, who was ejected on a controversial targeting penalty in the second half against LSU. The Tigers completed a t ouchdown drive eight plays after Catalon's ejection to take a 27-24 lead that would hold up. Someone who identified himself as an Arkansas fan had this to say in response to a media member's Twitter post quoting Pittman as saying Catalon would have to mi ss the first half and there was no way to overturn the ruling: "I get it Coach Pittman is a great guy but sometimes for the long term betterment for your program you got to stand up and call it/who for what it is!"Pittman did not like what he felt was the implied meaning of the post, that he felt Pittman wasn't standing up for Catalon by not calling out the SEC. "Twitter gives guys like you opportunities to set behind a cell phone and tweet out random things that you have NO idea what you're talk ing about," Pittman replied. "I can take a lot of remarks but for you to say I don't take up for my players is as far from being correct as you possibly can be." - Northwest Arkansas Times

Safety Jalen Catalon's reputation as a hard-striking defender is growing. It's an issue receivers who cross the middle of the field must be aware of when preparing for the Razorbacks. Catalon, who has 10 first-half tackles in each of the past two games, delivered a hit on Florida's Trent Whittemore in the first half that sent the 6-4, 208-pound freshman out of the game. The Athletic reported on Monday that Whittemore suffered a broken rib and a punctured lung in the game. In the second half, Justin Shor ter dropped a pass over the middle after a huge shoulder-led shot by Catalon that popped the wideout's helmet off. Shorter acted strangely after the big hit, walking behind the Gators' line of scrimmage toward their sideline with no helmet and needing a minute to compose himself as the game was paused. Shorter returned a few plays later. - Northwest Arkansas Times

Big hits from Catalon have occurred on nearly a weekly basis. Tone-setting type hits from the big-bodied safety against Georgia and Ole Miss certainly stand out. A jarring hit freed a would-be completion at Auburn, too. But he perhaps goes for the body b low too much for Pittman's liking. "He's going to have to slow down and wrap up a little bit every now and then," Pittman said. "He'll miss some tackles that certainly he wanted to make. But you don't want to take that physicality away from him because h e'll also kind of knock you out. "We'd like to keep the knockout part and maybe wrap up a little bit more."Pittman reiterated, though, that Catalon - third on the team with 46 tackles, including a team-high 30 solos - is the most important player in the back end of the Razorbacks' defense. He will play a vital role for Arkansas against Tennessee as it looks to win its second consecutive home game Saturday. The Razorbacks have not won back-to-back SEC home games since 2016. "He's aware of what tea ms are doing because he watches a tremendous amount of film," Pittman said. "So does the whole secondary back there, but very, very, very valuable to our football team as a young man and as a player. - Northwest Arkansas Times

Jalen Catalon saw nothing but green grass in front of him. Well, green grass and Matt Corral. But the redshirt freshman made quick work of the Ole Miss quarterback, slipping past his half-hearted attempt at a tackle and cruising into the end zone for a t one-setting touchdown. A native of Mansfield, Texas, Catalon returned his first career interception for a 35-yard score that put the Razorbacks up 17-0 over the Rebels early in the second quarter Saturday. For Corral, who entered Week 4 with only one pic k to his name, it was his second interception in as many attempts. "We were just in a zone coverage, just reading the quarterback and he rolled out and I read his eyes," Catalon said Tuesday, recalling the sequence. "I just broke on the ball and made the play and had my eyes on the end zone and took it home from there. It was a great feeling."I credit my D-line because without them all the interceptions that happened that day wouldn't have happened, so credit to those guys and everybody else who did their job. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. I made the play." Catalon made the play because that is what he knows to do. Razorbacks linebacker Grant Morgan labeled the safety a technician. "Linebackers have a joke about him ," Morgan noted. "We call him Ironman because we always know he's going to be able to make us right if we mess up. Just be able to have that at that time of the game just shows that no matter what happened we were able to capitalize on their mistakes and we were just able to play our defense. "We kept saying the whole game who is going to be the guy to make the play? Who is going to be the guy that does their job so good that it ends up making the difference in the game?" - Northwest Arkansas Times

Chad Morris called Jalen Catalon "one of the top five high school players" he ever saw. Turns out the former unsuccessful Arkansas Razorbacks coach now Auburn offensive coordinator successfully recruited perhaps one of the best safeties that Arkansas has ever seen. Umpteen chapters remain before archiving Catalon's place in Razorbacks history, but four games into 2020 the redshirt freshman from Mansfield, Texas posts a season reminiscent of past Razorbacks great safeties Steve Atwater, a NFL Hall of Fam er, Kenoy Kennedy, and All-Americans Ken Hamlin and the late Martine Bercher. For first-year Coach Sam Pittman's Razorbacks, 2-2 after thwarting Ole Miss, 33-21 Saturday at Reynolds Razorback Stadium, Catalon already has made 45 tackles, forced a fumble, recovered a fumble, broken up two passes and intercepted one returned for a 35-yard touchdown.Call Catalon a catalyst. A catalyst in Pittman and first-year defensive coordinator/safeties coach Barry Odom converting the pathetically porous 2018 an d 2019 Arkansas defenses on consecutive 2-10 overall/0-8 in the SEC teams under Morris and defensive coordinator John Chavis into earning 2020 national renown. Catalon the catalyst takes it from there. Tangibly and intangibly. Catalon's excelling every g ame stats speak tangibly. Intangibly, though respectively UA arriving the same year and just one year later, redshirt freshman walk-on starting cornerback Hunter Clark with three interceptions against Ole Miss, and true freshman starting cornerback Khari Johnson look to Catalon like a veteran senior. "Man he does everything!" Clark said during Saturday's postgame. "He took me and Khari under his wing this week. He took us into watch film. He's been a real leader for this defense." - Northwest Arkansas T imes
