2023 ALL-BIG SOUTH-OVC FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION FIRST TEAM: LB - William McRainey, Gr., Gardner-Webb,...McRainey was a First Team All-Conference selection for the third straight season. The senior led Gardner-Webb in the regular season with 90 tackles, picki ng up 11 tackles in back-to-back games against Austin Peay and Robert Morris, and 14 tackles, along with an interception, against Eastern Kentucky. McRainey now has 323 tackles for his career, just the 20th player in GWU football history to do so and the 13th most for any Gardner-Webb player in program history. McRainey also had five pass break ups, including one on a two-point conversion to preserve a 45-44 win for GWU over Bryant. - Gardner-Webb Football

2023 BIG SOUTH-OVC SCHOLAR-ATHLETE OF THE YEAR: William McRainey, LB, Gr., Gardner-Webb,...McRainey graduated with a Bachelor of Sciences in Economics & Finance in July 2023 with a 3.55 G.P.A. and is currently holds a 4.00 G.P.A. while working on his Mas ters of Business Administration (MBA). The linebacker was one of 39 semifinalists this season for the William V. Campbell Trophy. He is also active on campus and in the community, helping with various community service projects. On the field, McRainey is a captain for the Runnin' Bulldogs team that won a share of the Big South-OVC Championship and earned a bid to the FCS Playoffs. T he team's leading tackler with 92 hits, McRainey carries a 3.59 cumulative GPA in his major of Economics and Finance. A two-time Academic All-District selection, McRainey is an Academic All-America candidate in 2022. In addition to his 92 stops, McRainey added 9.0 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, one interception and two fumble recoveries. NOV 21 BIG SOUTH FOOTBALL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Gardner-Webb linebacker William McRainey (Shallotte, N.C.) had 10 tackles (six solo), 1.5 tackles for loss, and forced (and recovered) a fumble in helping GWU to win the conference championship. He helped limit the Aggies to just 87 yards rushing on 22 attempts, with 32 yards in losses after team sacks and TFL. McRainey and the defense limited A&T to 4-of-12 on third downs and no sustained touchdown drives (75 yards or more and three minutes-plus). OCT 31 BIG SOUTH FOOTBALL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Gardner-Webb linebacker William McRainey (Shallotte, N.C.) tallied 11 tackles (eight solo), one sack for minus-10 yards and two pass break-ups in Gardner-Webb's 48-40 Big South win over Bryant. He h ad five tackles in the fourth quarter, and his PBU with 19.3 seconds left in the game on fourth down at the GWU 32-yard line ended Bryant's comeback attempt. McRainey's sack came on a second down play with just under four minutes remaining that limited t he Bulldogs to a field goal four plays later. Four of McRainey's four tackles resulted in no gain, and his two pass break-ups were in the final period. - Big South Football

OCT 31 BIG SOUTH FOOTBALL FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: Gardner-Webb linebacker William McRainey (Shallotte, N.C.) made the most of his first career start with three catches for 78 yards and two touchdowns in Gardner-Webb's victory over Bryant. Entering the cont est with just four receptions for 40 yards and no scores, Burns first tied the game at 14-14 with a 71-yard catch-and-run to end the first quarter. His second catch of the day was a 4-yard touchdown to put GWU ahead, 48-29, while his final reception resu lted in a first down later in the fourth quarter. 2021 ALL-BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE FIRST-TEAM (COCHES/MEDIA): LB - William McRainey, Soph., Gardner-Webb,...McRainey led the Big South with 109 total tackles this season (55 solo), adding 13.0 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks. He broke up three passes and was i nvolved in three turnovers, returning one fumble 71 yards for a touchdown. The 6-0, 217-pound sophomore ranked 15th nationally in tackles this regular season and was ranked 20th in solo stops among FCS players. The two-time Big South Defensive Player of the Week averaged 10.1 tackles per game in seven league starts. McRainey was also named to the Big South Conference All-Academic Team, following up a spot on the CoSIDA Academic All-District III squad. SEPT 27 BIG SOUTH DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Gardner-Webb linebacker William McRainey (Shallotte, N.C.) finished with a game-high 17 tackles (12 solo, 5 assisted) with 1.0 tackle-for-loss, a pass break-up and forced a fumble in Gardner-Webb's 52-34 wi n over Western Carolina. He played all 99 of the team's defensive snaps, and his forced fumble in the first quarter was recovered by GWU at its own 32-yard line. McRainey had nine tackles in the second half, when the Runnin' Bulldog defense held WCU to j ust 14 points and none in the fourth quarter.
