Michigan has added a transfer and lost a player to the NCAA transfer portal. Linebacker Ernest Hausmann, coming off a standout freshman season at Nebraska, transferred to the Wolverines on Thursday, while quarterback Alan Bowman, who arrived at Michigan in 2021 and had been a starter at Texas Tech, is moving on. Hausmann, a three-star recruit, played in every game for the Cornhuskers, including seven starts. He had 54 tackles, including two for loss and a sack, and a fumble recovery. He is the second tr ansfer Michigan has added this month. Arizona State offensive lineman LaDarius Henderson transferred earlier this month.Bowman, a graduate student, played behind Cade McNamara and J.J. McCarthy during his two seasons at Michigan. Bowman, who made seven starts as a Texas Tech freshman in 2018, played in four games at Michigan this fall. He was 6-of-7 for 60 yards and a touchdown. Bowman is the fourth player in recent weeks to transfer from Michigan joining McNamara, tight end Erick All and defensi ve lineman George Rooks. While Bowman has many of the intangibles you want as a quarterback - a strong arm, high IQ, the grit and confidence to play the position - both coaches interviewed by MLive acknowledged his limitations. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound quarterback is a pure pocke t passer. While his arm strength is the foundation of his game, mobility is not. In 19 games at Texas Tech, Bowman attempted just 46 carries for negative-9 yards. And it plagued him in the new Texas Tech offense under Wells, when he wasn't injured. "Part of the offense he was very comfortable with, because it had some Air Raid principles to it, which he was doing with us and what he did with Kliff," Alexander said. "But all of the other stuff - giving him the read-to-run option, that ain't him. That's a wasted rep. But no, sitting in the pocket, spreading the ball around - he's as good as they get doing that stuff." - Ann Arbor News

While his college football resume is out there for all to see, Alan Bowman remains the wild card in the upcoming Michigan quarterback competition in preseason camp. Bowman, a graduate transfer from Texas Tech where he made 16 starts and completed 67% of his passes for 5,260 yards, 33 touchdowns and 17 interceptions in three years, will challenge Cade McNamara, Michigan's starting quarterback coming out of spring practice, and freshman J.J. McCarthy. McNamara, who is 6-foot-1, 205 pounds, made one start last season and threw for 425 yards and five touchdowns and had no interceptions. He also rushed for a score. McCarthy is a five-star recruit who enrolled early and participated in spring practice.Lavelle Durant, a quarterback trainer who operates Seattle-based LD Elite Training, has been working with the 6-foot-3, 216-pound Bowman since just before his senior year at Grapevine (Texas) High. The two worked out about a month ago, and Durant expects to get in another training session with him befor e preseason camp in August. "He's coming to Michigan to play right now," Durant told The Detroit News. "He's a great leader. He's gonna win the locker room over, and I think when you're coming from so far away from home, that's the No. 1 thing to do is t o grasp that locker room and get these guys to believe in you. "He's really good at leading by example. He's definitely mature and has a nice leadership aspect to him with having three years of experience already. If we go back and look at his Texas Tech film, he's definitely bringing a tremendous amount of toughness and a guy that's not afraid to play while he's banged up." - Detroit News

Alan Bowman is switching from scarlet and black to maize and blue. The former Texas Tech quarterback committed to Michigan on Sunday, about five weeks after he had his name placed into the NCAA transfer portal. In three years with the Red Raiders, Bowman was a 67-percent passer for 5,620 yards, 33 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. During most of those three seasons, Bowman was Kliff Kingsbury's and Matt Wells' first choice at quarterback. However, he missed four games and parts of two others in 2018 with two instances of a collapsed lung, missed the last nine games of 2019 with a fractured collarbone and left a game in 2020 with an ankle injury. - Lubbock Avalanche Journal

Texas Tech quarterback Alan Bowman indicated on Twitter on Sunday that he is transferring to Michigan. Bowman threw for 1,602 yards with 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions in eight games last season. He played in 19 games for Texas Tech across three s easons. Joe Milton was Michigan's starter at quarterback at the beginning of the 2020 season, but he eventually lost the job to redshirt freshman Cade McNamara. Milton entered the transfer portal, and Bowman would give the Wolverines an experienced optio n, assuming he's able to play for them immediately. - AP College Football

Four games into the current season and with Texas Tech still looking for a Big 12 win, coach Matt Wells announced a quarterback change Wednesday. Alan Bowman, who had shown tantalizing potential the past two seasons when not sidelined by long-term injuri es, is out. Utah State transfer Henry Colombi is the new starter, Wells said, for Tech's next game, Oct. 24 against West Virginia. Wells said Colombi "kind of jumpstarted the offense" in relief appearances against Kansas State and Iowa State. Colombi has completed 74.1% of his passes for 359 yards, with three touchdown passes and one interception. He was also familiar with the system offensive coordinator David Yost from Utah State. While Bowman suffered an ankle injury against K-State, that was n ot the reason for the change."Alan has played OK," Wells said. "He has not played bad. I want to say that. He is not the reason we're 1-3, absolutely. It's never that way. Playing the quarterback position, I understand it that quarterbacks usually get to o much credit and they get too much blame. "Certainly I want to make sure we're definitely not blaming, and it's absolutely not that. But when you're 1-3 and you have played just OK, and as we work through it with Alan, he understands that." A redshirt s ophomore from Grapevine, Bowman had a 64.7% completion rate with 881 yards. He's thrown seven touchdowns but also had four interceptions. - Dallas Morning News

An injury to Alan Bowman in Saturday's loss at Kansas State disrupted the Texas Tech quarterback picture for the third year in a row. Maybe this setback won't be as long-term as the collapsed lung and the cracked collarbone that caused Bowman to miss 13 games and the second halves of two others over the previous two seasons. Either way, the Red Raiders developed some confidence Saturday in his backup. Discussing Bowman's injured right ankle, Tech coach Matt Wells said Monday, "Nothing's broke. Nothing's fractured. He's day to day." But Wells and offensive coordinator David Yost indicated Bowman is likely to miss practice time this week and that Henry Colombi could get more snaps than usual to prepare. Tech (1-2, 0-2 in the Big 12) visits No. 24 Iowa St ate (2-1, 2-0) for a game at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Asked if the quarterbacks' snaps will be adjusted this week, Wells said, "If he doesn't practice today, then you've got to." "We normally are a on a two-thirds/one-third rotation with the one and two quart erback throughout practice," Yost said. "Could he get closer to 50-50 this week? It's very possible. - Lubbock Avalanche Journal

It took three years, but Alan Bowman will finally get to introduce himself to Texas' defense this weekend. Bowman will likely be Texas Tech's starting quarterback when the Red Raiders host UT on Saturday afternoon. This is Bowman's third year at Texas Te ch. He, however, has never faced the Longhorns. Bowman missed the 2018 meeting between these in-state rivals - a 41-34 win for Texas in Lubbock - with a collapsed lung. A shoulder injury sidelined him for his team's 49-24 loss at Royal-Memorial Stadium i n 2019.The 6-3, 215-pound Bowman was a three-star prospect when he was signed out of Grapevine High. He has shown flashes of brilliance at Texas Tech. Bowman threw for 605 yards in the third game of his collegiate career, and that effort against H ouston is the fifth-best effort in school history. Over his 12 career games, Bowman has averaged 340.7 passing yards. "We had always thought, when healthy, this guy was one of the better ones in the Big 12. I think he proved that two Saturdays ago with h is performance against Houston Baptist" Texas coach Tom Herman said on Monday. "We definitely know that he is more than capable. He is one of the better ones, again, in our league and we're going to have our work cut out for us." - Austin American States man

Alan Bowman threw for 430 yards and two touchdowns and Texas Tech stopped FCS team Houston Baptist on a 2-point conversion attempt late in the fourth quarter, hanging on for a 35-33 victory Saturday night. SaRodorick Thompson ran for two scores in the op ener of the pandemic-shortened season for the Red Raiders in front of a socially distanced crowd of 11,157. Bailey Zappe threw for 567 yards and four touchdowns in the first game for Houston Baptist (0-2) against a Power 5 opponent a week after finishing with 480 yards passing and three scores in a 57-31 loss to North Texas.Zappe's final TD pass to Jerreth Sterns pulled the Huskies within two with 3:23 remaining, but his pass to the sideline on the 2-point play was wide and high. The Red Raiders then ran out the clock. Josh Sterns had 209 yards receiving and two touchdowns, including a 75-yarder to get Houston Baptist within eight early in the fourth quarter. Jerreth Sterns had 12 catches for 130 yards. The Huskies set up their chance to tie by stopping Bowman on a quarterback sneak on fourth-and-1 from the Houston Baptist 4-yard line. Bowman spread the ball around, with five receivers getting at least four catches and 46 yards. Alan Bowman has plenty of goals, individual and team, that he would like to accomplish this fall. But, one, seems to be at the forefront. "No. 1, we're staying healthy. I'll tell you that right now," Bowman said, cracking a smile during a Zoom press conf erence held Saturday morning. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound signal caller has shown flashes of greatness but been unable to show consistency due to missing time as a freshman with two instances of a partially collapsed lung. The Grapevine native would miss mos t of his sophomore year with a cracked collarbone, finding a way to play in three games before electing to take a redshirt year.In total, Bowman has played in 11 games the past two seasons, throwing for 3,658 yards, 23 touchdowns and 10 intercepti ons. And, while he has not been able to see the field much during is collegiate year, Bowman feels as though he's made up for it by becoming a literal student of the game by engrossing himself in gameplanning, becoming "bigger, faster, stronger" thanks t o strength and conditioning and choosing to take a redshirt last season. "Basically, I probably could have played the last two games of the season," Bowman said. "So, it's play four or five games last season or play a full 12, now 10, this year with a ne w slate and whole-new set up. "I was more comfortable, saying, 'Hey, let's take an offseason. Let's get bigger, faster, stronger. Let's get another year in the offense...Let's play a full season instead of coming back right towards the end of the season. " - Lubbock Avalanche Journal

Texas Tech went 4-8 last year and a Heisman campaign is probably the last thing the Red Raiders are thinking about. Despite a young roster, Texas Tech has the bare bones of an explosive offense next season and Alan Bowman will be the driving force. When he's been healthy, Bowman has been the nation's leading passer in terms of yardage over the last two seasons. In 11 career games, Bowman has put up 3,658 yards and 23 touchdowns in his first two seasons. With another year under his belt building chemistr y with his young receiving corps featuring Erik Ezukanma and KeSean Carter, plus incoming four-star freshman Loic Fouonji. Bowman has outside potential to get an invite to New York and possibly hold up the trophy at the end of the season. For Bowma n to be the first ever Heisman winner in Texas Tech's history, something magical would need to happen. The highest any Red Raider has finished in the Heisman voting came in 2008 when Graham Harrell finished fourth and Michael Crabtree finished fifth. Tex as Tech finished the regular season 11-1 that year with its only loss coming against Oklahoma. Harrell threw for 5,111 yards and 45 touchdowns while Crabtree caught 97 passes for 1,165 yards and 19 touchdowns. - Dallas Morning News
