2023 ACC PLAYER OF THE YEAR/OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Jordan Travis, Florida State,...Travis was recently named a semifinalist for the Walter Camp National Player of the Year award, in addition to being a semifinalist for the Maxwell Award, Davey O'Brien Award, and the Jason Witten Man of the Year Award. The West Palm Beach, Florida, native threw for 2,755 yards and 20 touchdowns while adding seven more scores on the ground. The quarterback ranks third in ACC history in regard to single-season interception avoidance after being intercepted just twice on 324 pass attempts (0.62%), one of only three players in the nation to throw 20 or more touchdowns and two or fewer interceptions this season.

In back-to-back weeks of conference play, Travis threw for a combined 719 yards with four touchdowns, completing 61.9 percent of his passes along the way. Travis opened the season on a strong note as he completed 23-of-31 (74.2 percent) of his pass attempts for 342 yards and four touchdowns as he led the Seminoles to victory over No. 5 LSU. On three separate occasions this season, Travis was named the ACC Quarterback of the Week. Throughout the year, Travis was also named to the Davey O'Brien Award Great 8 and the Manning Award Star of the Week three times each. He earned Davey O'Brien Award National Quarterback of the Week honors on Oct. 24 after throwing for 268 yards and two touchdowns against No. 16 Duke.   The Florida Senate voted unanimously to repeal the state's name, image and likeness (NIL) law Friday, sending the bill to Gov. Ron DeSantis' desk. The 34-0 vote on the Senate floor means the bill, HB 7B, went through two committees and both chambers in this week's special session without a single vote against it. "We've done the part to push the NCAA to stop abdicating their responsibility back to the states," said Sen. Corey Simon, the former Florida State football star. "And we're now putting it on the universities to educate our kids at what their best practices are going forward."

The bill is intended to fix a perceived disadvantage for Florida schools and their athletes caused by the current structure. Florida was one of the first states to vote to allow its college athletes to make money off their name, image and likeness when the law passed in 2020. But it included some restrictions. Teams and coaches, for example, can't facilitate players' deals. Some states never passed NIL laws. Others, including Alabama, Tennessee and South Carolina, have repealed, suspended or loosened them. All three of those states have big-name programs that compete for recruits against programs like Florida and Florida State. - Tampa Tribune

Florida State football coach Mike Norvell, whose team ended last season with a six-game winning streak, was rewarded with a three-year contract extension that will pay him an average of $8.05 million annually through 2029. The school released the contract Wednesday. It will pay Norvell $5.6 million in 2023, $7.6 million in 2024, $7.8 million in 2025, $8.1 million in 2026, $8.3 million in 2027, $8.6 million in 2028 and $8.8 million in 2029. He also gets a $250,000 retention bonus if he's still employed every Dec. 31. Norvell earned $4.5 million last year and would have made $7.25 million in the final year of his previous deal.

This is the second extension for Norvell, who was hired after the 2019 season. The Seminoles added a year to his contract following the 2021 season. FSU finished 10-3 last season and ranked No. 11 in the final AP college football poll. The Seminoles beat Florida State and Miami - and scored at least 45 points against both in-state rivals in the same season for the first time. FSU also was the only team to lead its conference in both total offense and total defense. Along with Southeastern Conference heavyweights Alabama and Georgia, FSU was one of three teams to rank in the top 15 in yards per play on both sides of the ball. "Coach Norvell has re-established a culture that the entire Seminole Family can appreciate," athletic director Michael Alford said in a statement. "We are proud of the way Coach Norvell, his staff and his team represent Florida State University on and off the field." - AP College Football

Jordan Travis threw for 418 yards and two touchdowns and No. 13 Florida State beat Oklahoma 35-32 on Thursday night in the Cheez-It Bowl. Johnny Wilson made a one-handed grab for a 58-yard gain to set up Ryan Fitzgerald's 32-yard field goal with 55 seconds left. The Seminoles (10-3) held on, sacking quarterback Dillon Gabriel on the Sooners' comeback bid. Jovante Barnes tied it at 32 for Oklahoma (6-7) with 3:37 left on a 12-yard run. That was after Travis fired a 17-yard pass to tight end Markeston Douglas in the end zone to put the Seminoles up 32-25 midway through the fourth. The Seminoles had gotten the ball off an Oklahoma fumble. Treshaun Ward's 1-yard rushing touchdown late in the third quarter gave the Seminoles an 18-17 lead - their first advantage since leading 3-0 in the opening quarter. Travis converted two third downs to guide Florida's State 94 yards on the 15-play drive.

The Sooners went up 25-18 with 13:22 left on 25-yard run by freshman Gavin Sawchuk and a successful 2-point conversion. Florida State needed just two minutes to go 75 yards to tie it at 25, with Ward taking the ball 38 yards into the end zone for his second touchdown of the game. Florida State won its first bowl since the 2017 season, and its first under coach Mike Norvell. Travis, who has already announced his intention to return to the team for the 2023 season, became the 11th player in program history to pass for 3,000-plus yards in a season. Treshaun Ward had 81 yards on 10 carries for Florida State, and Wilson had a season-high 202 yards on eight catches. The Seminoles won their final five games of the regular season, scoring at least 38 points in all of them. Florida State was 5-3 in conference play with its first winning season since 2017, which also was Jimbo Fisher's last year coaching the team before taking the head coaching job at Texas A&M. - Florida State/AP College Football

Jordan Travis knew midway through Florida State's football season that he wanted to come back for another year as the Seminoles quarterback. But the redshirt junior kept that decision to himself, waiting until after the regular season finale against Florida before announcing he would return for his senior season. He shared the news in the form of a 55-second highlight video posted on social media on Dec. 5. "So many memories have been made on this field," Travis said in the video taken in Doak Campbell Stadium. "And we're not done yet. See you in 2023." Travis was happy to share what he had known for quite some time. "It's a lot of weight off my shoulders," he said. "I've been thinking about it a lot. I just couldn't wait to get it out there, but I wanted to ensure the timing was right." The decision to return comes on the heels of a career season for Travis, who accounted for 3,163 yards of total offense with 30 touchdowns while leading FSU to a 9-3 record and its first bowl appearance since the 2019 season. He became the first player in school history with at least 20 touchdown passes and 7 rushing touchdowns in a season.

It wasn't long after Travis shared his decision with the public that several of his teammates followed suit. Linebacker Tatum Bethune, offensive lineman Robert Scott, receiver Mycah Pittman and running back Trey Benson were among the Seminoles to commit to returning in 2023. For many of those coming back, their decisions were made easier with the return of Travis. "He told me he was coming back and I was like OK, I'll join you," said Benson, who led FSU with 965 rushing yards. Added Pittman: "The momentum is there and we know what we're capable of doing and we believe in Coach [Mike] Norvell and we believe in J. Travis and what he's capable of doing." - Orlando Sentinel

Florida State star quarterback Jordan Travis announced Monday evening that he is remaining with the Seminoles for one more year. Travis has established himself as one of the best FSU players in recent history and will enter 2023 as a preseason Heisman Trophy candidate. He pushed into the top 10 on FSU's all-time list in passing touchdowns (43) and rushing touchdowns (24). He ended the regular season with six consecutive games with at least three touchdowns and one or fewer turnovers - the longest streak in FSU history.

He starred in the finale against Florida, repeatedly turning sacks into long gains. Gators coach Billy Napier said Travis' legs were the difference in FSU's 45-38 victory. Travis has a 22-to-4 touchdown-to-interception ratio this year, and his passing efficiency (158.25) is 14th in the country. He also ranked in the top 30 nationally in total offense (3,163 yards) and 10th in yards per play (8.1). He is the first FSU player ever with at least 20 touchdown passes and seven rushing touchdowns in the same season. He has started 26 career games at FSU, including all 12 this season to help the No. 13 Seminoles to a 9-3 regular season, heading into the Cheez-It Bowl matchup against Oklahoma. - Tampa Bay Times

Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis, the fourth player in school history to account for 3,000 yards and 30 touchdowns in a single season, is staying in school for his senior year. Travis made the announcement Monday, the same day hundreds of players across the nation entered the NCAA transfer portal or declared for the NFL draft. Travis chose a different path and could be an early favorite in next year's Heisman Trophy race. "So many memories have been made on this field and we're not done yet," Travis said in a highlight video posted on social media. “See y'all in 2023."

A fourth-year junior, Travis has 22 touchdown passes to go along with seven rushing scores, one receiving and just four interceptions. He has led the 13th-ranked Seminoles (9-3) to five consecutive wins as they prepare to play Oklahoma (6-6) in the Cheez-It Bowl on Dec. 29 in Orlando. Travis joined FSU's three Heisman Trophy winners - Charlie Ward in 1993, Chris Weinke in 2000 and Jameis Winston in 2013 - to account for 3,000 yards and 30 TDs in a season. He is one of six QBs in Power Five conferences with at least 20 TD passes and four or fewer interceptions. - AP College Football

Trey Benson's 17-yard scoring run with 4:06 left in the game was his third touchdown of the game and gave No. 16 Florida State a 45-38 win over rival Florida on Friday night. Benson rushed for 111 yards on 20 carries and Jordan Travis ran for 83 yards and two scores as the Seminoles piled up 228 yards on the round - the seventh straight time they surpassed the 200-yard rushing mark. Florida threatened on its last drive in the final minutes, but Anthony Richardson’s fourth-down pass over the middle fell incomplete with 39 seconds to go.

Travis also completed 13 of 30 passes for 270 yards as Florida State (9-3) completed a sweep of its state rivals for the first time since 2016. The Seminoles routed Miami 45-3 on Nov. 5. Florida State trailed 24-21 at the half, but opened the second half with scores on its next three drives (field goal, touchdown, touchdown) to jump in front 38-24. The Gators (6-6) answered with a pair of touchdowns, one each by Montrell Johnson and Trevor Etienne, to tie the game with 7:41 left. Richardson completed just 9 of 27 passes for 198 yards and three TDs. Ricky Pearsall had a career-best 148 receiving yards, including touchdowns catches of 52 and 43 yards in the first half. - Florida State/AP College Football

Jordan Travis and Treshaun Ward each had a pair of touchdown runs in the first half and Florida State ran for 251 yards, routing Louisiana 49-17 on Saturday. Florida State (8-3) scored a season high in points, surpassed 200 rushing yards for a sixth straight time and picked up its fourth straight double-digit victory. The Seminoles last won eight or more games in 2016.

The Seminoles didn't allow a touchdown through three quarters. They extended their streak to 32 straight drives without a touchdown before Louisiana (5-6) managed a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns against Florida State's backups. Florida State had 244 rushing yards, averaging 6.1 per carry. Benson led the way with 80 rushing yards, giving him 854 on the season. Louisiana quarterback Chandler Fields completed 19 of 36 passes for 159 yards and a 5-yard touchdown to Michael Jefferson. - Florida State/AP College Football

Jordan Travis threw for three touchdowns, caught a scoring pass and ran for another score, and No. 25 Florida State beat reeling Syracuse 38-3 on Saturday night, the Orange's fourth straight loss. It was the last conference game for Florida State (7-3, 5-3 Atlantic Coast Conference), which has won three straight since a midseason skid. The Orange (6-4. 3-3) lost their second straight at home and it was ugly. The Orange notched just nine first downs to 25 for FSU, were 1 of 11 on third-down conversion attempts, and were outgained 420-160, and the defense was on the field for more than 36 minutes for the third straight game. Florida State entered the game leading the country with 69 plays of 20-plus yards and quickly tacked on another when`Trey Benson bolted around the left side for 27 on the Seminoles' first possession. Five plays later, Travis scored on a 3-yard run up the middle for a 7-0 lead. Florida State has scored on 13 of 19 first drives of a half this season, with 12 touchdowns.

Travis, who was 21-of-23 passing for 155 yards, hit Malik McClain for a 15-yard touchdown late in the first for a 14-0 lead as the Orange struggled offensively despite the return of quarterback Garrett Shrader, who had missed six straight quarters with an undisclosed injury. Shrader finished 6 of 17 for 65 yards with one interception and rushed for minus-2 yards on 10 carries. Syracuse's first three possessions were three-and-outs, and even when the defense snared a turnover the offense failed to capitalze. Travis lost a fumble when he was sacked by linebacker Derek McDonald early in the second and Justin Barron recovered for the Orange at the FSU 23. Syracuse then lost 12 yards on the next three plays and Andre Szmyt missed a 53-yard field goal, just his third miss in 18 attempts this season and first miss in three tries from 50 yards or longer. The Seminoles struck again late in the second quarter when Travis hit Johnny Wilson for a 24-yard touchdown. Wilson shed a tackle attempt by defensive back Duce Chestnut along the right side and scooted into the end zone with 5:47 left for a 21-3 lead. - Florida State/AP College Football

Jordan Travis threw three touchdown passes, Trey Benson ran for 128 yards and two scores as Florida State became bowl-eligible with a 45-3 rout over Miami on Saturday night. The Seminoles (6-3, 4-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) outgained the Hurricanes (4-5, 2-3) 456-188 and were never threatened after a 31-3 lead at halftime. Travis completed 10 of 12 passes for 202 yards before being removed early in the fourth quarter. Florida State exceeded 200 yards rushing for the fourth straight game with 225. Miami quarterback Tyler Van Dyke re-aggravated an injury to his right throwing shoulder early in the second quarter. Van Dyke, who first sustained the injury against Duke on Oct. 22 and missed the next game, favored his shoulder without contact after an incomplete pass. He returned for the next drive but left for good after another errant pass missed its target.

It was the Hurricanes' fourth straight loss at home, their longest skid in a season since 1973. They also have not scored a touchdown in nine consecutive quarters. The Seminoles ended their first two drives on Travis' touchdown passes to Ontaria Wilson and DJ Lundy. Travis connected with Wilson for 56 yards 1:38 into the game, then found Lundy open in the end zone for a 2-yard score. Lundy, a linebacker, was utilized in the short-yardage situation. Benson's touchdown runs from 13 yards and 1 yard in the second quarter made it 28-3. The Hurricanes drove to the Florida State 2-yard line late in the third quarter but freshman quarterback Jacurri Brown failed to retrieve a poor snap from center that lost 23 yards with Jarred Verse recovering the ball for the Seminoles. Travis threw his third touchdown pass, an 8-yard completion to Camren McDonald on the first play of the fourth quarter. Andres Borregales capped the Hurricanes' opening drive of the game with a season-high 47-yard field goal. - Florida State/AP College Football

Jordan Travis wasn't sharp at times but still completed 23 of 38 passes for a career-best 396 yards and three touchdowns as Florida State routed Georgia Tech 41-16 on Saturday. Travis connected with Johnny Wilson on a 78-yard TD, Lawrance Toafili on a 62-yard TD and Ja'Khi Douglas on a 24-yard TD as the Seminoles (5-3, 3-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) halted a three-game losing streak. Trey Benson ran 18 times for 111 yards and Toafili had 13 carries for 70 yards as the Seminoles accumulated 246 rushing yards, averaging 5.7 yards per carry. Freshman Zach Pyron completed 18 of 28 passes for 198 yards as well as a TD pass and TD run for Georgia Tech (3-5, 2-3). Pyron took most of the snaps as he filled in for Jeff Sims, who left last week's game against Virginia with an injury. Travis completed passes to 10 receivers. Wilson caught three passes for 111 yards and Toafili grabbed five passes for 84 yards. - Florida State/AP College Football

Jordan Travis completed 16 of 26 passes for a career-high 321 yards and a touchdown as Florida State dominated Boston College 44-14 on Saturday. The Seminoles have opened 4-0 for the first time since 2015. Trey Benson had a 93-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and he added a pair of touchdown runs (36 and 15). Lawrance Toafili had a 1-yard TD run, his third scoring run of his season, and Treshaun Ward had a 22-yard touchdown run. FSU (4-0, 2-0 ACC) has 12 rushing touchdowns in four games. Kentron Poitier went up to grab a 31-yard touchdown reception, the first score on his FSU career. Darion Williamson caught five passes for 98 yards, both of which are career highs. Florida State's defense didn't allow BC (1-3, 0-2) to cross midfield in the first half. The Eagles punted four times and Phil Jurkovec was picked off twice, once each by Omarion Cooper and Greedy Vance. BC finished with seven punts. BC scored its first points late in the third quarter, when Jurkovec connected with Alex Broome on a 5-yard TD reception. - Florida State/AP College Football

Shyheim Brown blocked LSU's extra-point attempt with no time left to give Florida State a 24-23 victory Sunday night, spoiling Brian Kelly's debut as Tigers coach. Despite a slew of mistakes including a muffed punt with 2:15 left, LSU came within the extra point of tying it in the wild finish. Florida State's Treshaun Ward fumbled at the LSU 1 with 1:20 to go, and Tigers quarterback Jayden Daniels drove LSU for a touchdown on a 2-yard pass to Jaray Jenkins with no time left. With LSU fans celebrating an apparent two-touchdown comeback in the final 4:07 - and Florida State fans bracing themselves for what could have gone down as an infamous implosion - Brown deflected Damian Ramos' kick, touching off a Florida State celebration during which players wildly rushed the field.

Jordan Travis passed for 260 yards and two touchdowns for Florida State. Travis' scoring passes came on a 39-yard throw to Ontaria Wilson on a flea flicker and a 27-yard pass that Wilson corralled with one hand while being interfered with. Travis also rushed for 31 yards on a combination of designed runs and scrambles, repeatedly leaving LSU pass rushers grasping air as he spun or darted away from pressure. Tens of thousands garnet and gold-clad spectators helped sell-out the Superdome, virtually negating what could have been a home advantage for LSU in a game played just 80 miles from its Baton Rouge campus. And they left happy after Florida State (2-0) - coming off four straight losing seasons - prolonged a promising start to coach Mike Norvell's third season in charge. - Florida State/AP College Football

Ask Jordan Travis where he's improved the most since last season and the Florida State quarterback will tell you it's all about confidence. It's that belief in himself that's helped the redshirt junior earn the trust of his teammates and coaches as Travis prepares to be the Seminoles starter. It's a long time coming for the West Palm Beach product, who split time with McKenzie Milton as injuries limited him to eight starts last season. "It's 100% different. I'm more confident in whatever I do out there," Travis said. "I can put the ball up. I have great running backs and a [offensive] line that can block for me. I feel great."

Coach Mike Norvell credited Travis' development throughout preseason camp, noting that he completed more than 70% of his passes during a limited role in Saturday's second scrimmage. "He wasn't out there very long, but he made some good choices," said Norvell. "He ended up getting three series and moved the ball positively." Travis worked tirelessly with his receivers in the offseason in player-led practices and summer workouts. The additional work hasn't gone unnoticed and is paying dividends. "I've grown a lot," he said. "I'm making throws that I've never made before, but there is still a lot of room for improvement. I'm throwing every single day, pushing and watching lots of film. I will keep growing and my teammates have helped me a lot with that, giving me the confidence I need. The coaches have given me the confidence that I need." - Orlando Sentinel

After so many years of FSU quarterback battles, it's got to be quite nice for that to be sorted out for the Seminoles. In his first three years at FSU, Travis has come incredibly far. The Louisville transfer didn't factor into the playing time conversation at all when he arrived. Even once he got on the field late in the 2019 season, he was used almost exclusively as a runner. But there's no denying now that Travis has grown into quite a quarterback for the Seminoles.

He's been FSU's midseason savior at quarterback each of the last two seasons, taking over three games into the 2020 season and beating out McKenzie Milton to claim the full-time job a few weeks into the 2021 season. In 2020, Travis relied more on his athleticism, rushing for a team-high 559 yards and seven touchdowns. He completed just 55% of his passes and had as many interceptions as he did passing touchdowns (6). Travis' athleticism was still a factor in 2021 and should still be in 2022. But the most promising development was the notable step forward he took as a passer. Last season, he completed 122 of 194 passes (62.9%), throwing nine more touchdowns (15) and the same number of interceptions as he did in 2020 on 63 more pass attempts. - Times Union

When Florida State coach Mike Norvell began retooling the Seminoles' roster over the past few seasons, he was looking to add necessary experience and leadership to an otherwise young and raw group of players. Norvell achieved that by adding more than two dozen players through the transfer market. Their presence gave the team a lift, specifically through the performances of players such as Jermaine Johnson II, Keir Thomas, Jashaun Corbin and Devontay Love-Taylor. As the play improved, so did the team's confidence - a noticeable improvement coming out of FSU's spring camp last month.

"You saw confidence because guys understood the expectation," said Norvell. "We were able to push harder, and it wasn't all new for them." The quarterback group showed the most significant growth, with redshirt junior Jordan Travis returning as FSU's starter. After on-again, off-again seasons, Travis also assumes a more prominent leadership role for the Seminoles. "It's probably one of the biggest differences within our program," said Norvell. "Jordan is an incredible young man, but we had yet to see that confidence because there had not been that consistency of him being the guy, being able to go out there and consistently showcase what he could do. We got a glimpse of that last year and you watch how he responded in challenging situations." - Orlando Sentinel

Jordan Travis threw for three touchdowns and 251 yards and Florida State stopped Boston College in their own territory in the final two minutes for a 26-23 victory on Saturday. A week after rallying from an eight-point deficit in the final five minutes for a victory over rival Miami, the Seminoles (5-6, 4-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) rolled to a 23-point lead before holding on to move a victory away from becoming bowl eligible. Travis completed 20-of-34 passes with no interceptions, connecting with three different receivers for scores.

Coming off his five-touchdown day last Saturday in a victory at Georgia Tech — three rushing and two throwing — BC QB Phil Jurkovec went 10 of 24 for 148 yards with a TD and one INT. He carried 17 times for 59 yards with a score. Pat Garwo III had a scoring run for the Eagles (6-5, 2-5). The Seminoles led 19-3 at halftime and scored on the initial drive of the second half when Malik McClain made a leaping grab of Travis' pass in the back of the end zone. BC then scored two TDs — failing on a two-point conversion on the first — in just over 3 ½ minutes early in the fourth, slicing it to 26-23 on Jurkovec's 36-yard TD pass to Zay Flowers. Florida State pressured, hit or sacked Jurkovec nearly every time he dropped back to pass in the opening half, limiting the Eagles to just 95 total yards. - Florida State/AP College Football

Florida State delivered a comeback that belongs among the great down-to-the-wire finishes in the history of the rivalry with Miami. And Mike Norvell has a signature win to continue building the Seminoles' foundation. Jordan Travis completed a fourth-and-14 pass to Andrew Parchment and two plays later ran it in from 1 yard out with 26 seconds to go as Florida State defeated Miami 31-28 on Saturday.

Trailing 28-23 and taking over at the Seminoles' 20-yard line, Travis dropped back and connected with Ja'Khi Douglas on a 59-yard catch-and-run. After two incompletions and a false start, Travis connected with Parchment on the 24-yard reception to the goal line. "Wow, what a game," Norvell said. "So proud of our team. The coaches, everybody involved in the program. The work, the investment, responding to adversity. The way that we work. Everything that we do within our program is there to prepare you for a moment like that...It's been a challenging road. We've had some real ups and downs. But these kids, they've just continued to work, they've continued to believe." Florida State (4-6, 3-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) has had a roller-coaster season, beginning 0-4 before winning three straight and then dropping two in a row. But now the Seminoles have picked up their first victory over a rival - Miami, Florida or Clemson - since a Nov. 25, 2017 win over the Gators. Travis completed 18 of 26 passes for a career-high 274 yards and he ran 22 times for 62 yards and two touchdowns for Florida State. - Florida State/AP College Football

Jordan Travis threw three touchdown passes and rushed for two more scores as Florida State upset North Carolina for the second year in row, winning 35-25 on Saturday. The Seminoles (2-4, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) have won back-to-back games for the first time since 2019. Travis ran for 121 yards on 14 carries and completed 11 of 13 passes for 145 yards. Two of his touchdown throws went to Ontaria Wilson and another to Malik McClain. The Tar Heels (3-3, 2-3), who began the season in the Top 10, lost for the first time in four home outings despite two touchdown passes and 108 yards rushing from quarterback Sam Howell. Howell hit Kamari Morales in the end zone on a 21-yard play on North Carolina's first possession of the second half to close within 21-17.

Florida State responded with Travis' 1-yard sneak. The Seminoles scored again on Travis' 6-yard toss to Wilson. North Carolina coach Mack Brown fell to 0-11 vs. his alma mater (including 0-8 while in charge of the Tar Heels). Travis, who sparked an upset of a then-unbeaten North Carolina team last October, ran 53 yards for a second-quarter touchdown as the Seminoles took a 14-10 lead. He had 87 yards on the ground in the first half. Travis threw 32 yards to Wilson for a touchdown on Florida State's next possession to stretch the lead with 53 seconds left in the half. North Carolina's Josh Downs, who hauled in a 33-yard pass for the game's first touchdown, has caught at least one touchdown pass in every game this season. - North Carolina/AP College Football

Ryan Fitzgerald made a 34-yard field-goal as time expired to lift Florida State to its first win of the season, 33-30 over Syracuse on Saturday. Jordan Travis had runs of 33 and 25 on a drive in the final minute to set up Fitzgerald's kick. Travis had 19 rushes for 113 yards for the Seminoles (1-4, 1-2 Atlantic Coast Conference). Travis completed 22 of 32 passes for 131 yards, including touchdown passes to Camren McDonald and Keyshawn Helton. Garrett Shrader ran 16 times for 137 yards and Sean Tucker had 24 carries for 102 yards as Syracuse (3-2, 0-1) averaged 6 yards per carry. Florida State's defense bent but held Syracuse to just 2 of 12 on third-down conversions. The Orange were also 0 for 3 on fourth-down conversions, including linebacker Kalen DeLoach's goal-line stop in the third quarter. - Florida State/AP College Football

A week off was just what Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis needed. As the Seminoles prepare to host Pittsburgh Saturday, few players needed the time off than Travis, who left the field following the team's disappointing 48-16 loss to Louisville two weeks ago battered and bruised. Through the first six games of the season, including three consecutive starts, the redshirt sophomore has endured a litany of injuries to everything from his legs to his throwing hand and shoulder. The West Palm Beach native appeared limited during the loss to the Cardinals and was replaced by true freshman Chubba Purdy late in the fourth quarter.

"I think it was big-time help for him," FSU coach Mike Norvell said of the bye's impact on Travis. "He's played extremely hard these last three games, four games. He's done a nice job, but he's had some bumps and bruises along the way. "He's done a good job during the week making sure he's getting treatment and taking care of his body in a normal workweek but having the bye week allowed him to be able to step back and have a few couple days to heal up." Travis said the off week came at a good time. "It helped me heal, for sure," Travis said. "My body feels good and mentally, it did a lot for me so I could focus on the week in practice [and]...all the little things about the offense." - Sun-Sentinel

Jordan Travis ran for two touchdowns and threw a scoring pass to help Florida State build a big first-half lead, and the Seminoles held off North Carolina. Travis guided an offensive that generated 434 yards for Florida State (2-3, 1-3 Atlantic Coast Conference), but was shut out in the second half. North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell led three second-half touchdown drives to pull to 31-28, but the Tar Heels (3-1, 3-1) had drops on third and fourth down in the final seconds to end the comeback bid. The Seminoles gave coach Mike Norvell a signature victory in his first season in Tallahassee following a shaky start that included a blowout loss at Miami. Travis, a redshirt sophomore, completed 8 of 19 passes for 191 yards and ran 16 times for 107 yards as the Seminoles jumped out to a 31-7 halftime lead, the most dominating performance for the program in recent memory. - Florida State/AP College Football

After two weeks of quarterback play, Jordan Travis has proven to be one of Florida State's best offensive weapons. Travis made his first start against Notre Dame last Saturday and helped keep the Seminoles within reach in the first half. Travis threw for a 48-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter to Tamorrion Terry to give the 'Noles their first and, ultimately, last lead of the game in the 42-26 defeat at Notre Dame Stadium. Although the defense was lackluster, the offense has begun to show growth on the back of its win two weekends ago against Jacksonville State. Travis has proved himself to be a formidable quarterback.

And while just being a redshirt sophomore, the ceiling seems to only be getting higher after his first start. Though Travis suffered a hand injury late in the loss against Notre Dame, he is expected to be ready for Saturday's home game against North Carolina. FSU coach Mike Norvell said Travis practiced on a limited basis Sunday, adding that "everything is moving in a positive direction." Norvell was pleased with Travis' performance against the Irish. "His poise, his composure, some of the play-making ability that showed up through the course of the game was really impressive. And like I said in the opening, there are some plays he'd like to have back," Norvell said. "But I thought he did a great job in his first start and am excited to see him continue to build upon that with what he's going to be able to do here this week moving forward." - Times Union

Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis provided a much-needed spark for a lethargic Seminoles offense during his first career start, but it wasn't enough. The improved Seminoles suffered their third loss of the season, falling 42-26 on the road Saturday to No. 5 Notre Dame. Travis combined for 300 total yards of offense, scoring two touchdowns, but a poorly thrown ball that was intercepted in the end zone midway through the fourth quarter squashed a late chance to cut into the Fighting Irish's lead. "There were some bright moments, but we didn't get the job done," FSU coach Mike Norvell said.

While the offense showed signs of life, the FSU defense didn't have an answer for Notre Dame's ground game, which amassed 353 yards and four touchdowns. It was the most rushing yards against a Seminoles team since Notre Dame rushed for 365 yards on Nov. 10, 2018. Tailbacks Kyren Williams (185 yards) and Chris Tyree (104 yards) combined for 288 of the 353 yards with touchdowns of 46, 1 and 45 yards. The Fighting Irish finished with 554 yards of total offense, the most allowed by an FSU team since Boise State amassed 621 yards on Aug. 31, 2019. The team averaged 8.3 yards per play during the game. - Orlando Sentinel

Jordan Travis came off the bench to lead Florida State to touchdowns on five straight drives as the Seminoles rallied to knock off FCS program Jacksonville State 41-24 on Saturday. Travis completed 13 of 18 passes for 215 yards, including a 41-yard touchdown pass to Keyshawn Helton. The redshirt sophomore also added a touchdown run, one of four TD runs from the Seminoles. Florida State (1-2) trailed 14-0 in the first quarter and went scoreless on four opening drives under the direction of true freshman quarterback Tate Rodemaker.

Zerrick Cooper completed 22 of 30 passes for 232 yards and had a rushing touchdown. Cooper, who threw for back-to-back 3,000-yard seasons at JSU, was efficient but a fourth-quarter interception snagged by Florida State's Asante Samuel Jr. all but ended the Gamecocks' upset bid. JSU's Kolbi Fuqua also had a 13-yard interception return for a touchdown in the first quarter. Lawrance Toafili ran for 99 yards and a touchdown for Florida State, which finished with 256 rushing yards on 53 carries. The Seminoles were held to just 38 first-half rushing yards. - Florida State/AP College Football
