The scooter was the clue. Ohio State defensive tackle Haskell Garrett is out for spring football practice with an injury to the lower part of his right leg, Ohio State confirmed on Friday night. The obvious issue came to light when Garrett spoke to a you th sports group in the Columbus area on Thursday and on Friday posted a photo on Instagram with his right leg bent and resting on a scooter. It's the same type of scooter that Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett made famous by wheeling around on during t he College Football Playoff after suffering a season-ending injury against Michigan in 2014. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Haskell Garrett may have seemed to come out of nowhere to become one of the Big Ten Conference's best defensive tackles as a senior. In reality Garrett had been building to his 2020 breakout for four years. Garrett did what the Buckeyes look for from fou r- and five-year seniors - role players who supplement the rotation behind NFL-bound starters and capitalize on their moment. By doing exactly that, Garrett likely put himself on the radar of NFL teams. Yet with a preseason interrupted by a gunshot wound and shortened and chopped up by the coronavirus pandemic, what could Garrett do with a full, healthy season? He becomes the fourth Buckeye to announce he is taking advantage of that option, following fellow defensive tackle Antwuan Jackson, defensive ba ck Marcus Williamson and offensive lineman Thayer Munford. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

One of the feel-good stories in all of college football, Garrett - a senior from Las Vegas - is enjoying a breakout season in which he's played in a ll five games with 12 tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss, one quarterback sack and an interception for a touchdown two weeks ago at Michigan State. - Ohio State Football

A defensive tackle catching a tipped pass for an interception is a pretty rare occurrence. Not for Haskell Garrett lately. The Ohio State senior had the biggest defensive play in the Buckeyes' 52-12 victory over Michigan State on Saturday when he tipped a pass from Spartans quarterback Rocky Lombardi and intercepted the ball in the end zone for a touchdown. "It's pretty weird," Garrett said. "In walk-throughs on Thursday, the ball got tipped up in practice. I caught it and ran it back. Fortunately, it h appened (again) during the game."For any defensive lineman, it would have been a special moment. For Garrett, whose season was imperiled when he was shot in the face in August trying to break up an altercation, it was even bigger. "It means a lot, " he said. "It reassures me that I'm putting the right work in and doing the right things. It was very emotional. And I was just happy to change the momentum of the game." To be truthful, the game was already going the Buckeyes' way. Garrett's touchdown made it 28-0 in the second quarter as Ohio State's defense stifled the Spartans' offense. The Buckeyes had allowed only one first down and 50 yards in 18 plays to that point. - Columbus Dispatch

Ohio State football's defense showed improvement in Week 2 in a 38-25 win over Penn State. There are still questions, but the production of the interior defensive linemen isn't one of them. Tommy Togiai put together his career-best game with seven tackle s, including three sacks and two quarterback hurries. Those numbers earned him Big Ten Player of the Week honors as he continued the tradition of OSU defensive ends having breakout performances inside Beaver Stadium. Haskell Garrett has joined Togiai as a dominant force on the inside. Garrett has gone from a player not many expected be ready to play at the start of the year after being shot in the face, to a standout on the defense. In two games, he's recorded four tackles and a sack while earning Ohio State's Player of the Game honors for his play against Nebraska. The talk during the preseason focused on the depth at defensive end and how it could mirror 2017. The defensive tackles were more of a question because of the lack of depth compared to last season. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

It was already impressive that Haskell Garrett was able to play in Ohio State football's 52-17 win over Nebraska less than two months after being shot in the face. Having an impact, being the best player on the defensive line, and earning Player of the G ame honors is something you could call miraculous. "I hugged Haskell in the locker room after the game and said, 'This is a miracle,'" defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs said after the game. "It's a miracle. This kid was shot in the face. I don't know ho w many days ago it was, but it wasn't that long ago, and he just never gave up...He's in there working with Larry (Johnson) with stitches learning and preparing without being able to do anything physically. "For him to do that and be able to play...I kno w having him on the field was a difference-maker for the Buckeyes." Garrett's efforts in the win - two tackles, one tackle for loss and a sack - were not only an inspirational story but a much-needed boost from a spot that the Buckeyes were thought to be lacking depth. His absence, and the uncertainty surrounding Taron Vincent's status, left questions for how OSU would make up for losing three veterans from 2019. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Vincent's uncertain status is somewhat offset by the rapid recovery of Haskell Garrett. The senior tackle suffered a gunshot wound to the face in late August. Johnson said Garrett is in practice every day but has not yet been cleared for full participati on. It certainly sounds like the Buckeyes expect Garrett to play - possibly sooner than later. The day of the incident it was fair to question whether he could play at all in 2020. "It was scary, to get a phone call that late at night to know one of your players has been shot," Johnson said. "I'm thankful and blessed he's in the position he is." - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Ohio State defensive lineman Haskell Garrett was shot in the face in the University District early Sunday morning after attempting to break up a fight between two people, he told Columbus police. Garrett, 22, was walking toward the 400 block of Chittende n Avenue when he noticed a man and a woman "arguing and being aggressive," according to a copy of a police report obtained by The Dispatch. In response, Garrett asked the man to stop fighting with the woman before the man fired his handgun at him. Garret t, who was struck once, said he did not know either person. Police later found a gun shell at the scene and a trail of blood that led to an apartment about a half-mile away, where Garrett had retreated. He had a gunshot wound through both cheeks. Two wit nesses were interviewed at the scene, including Ohio State linebacker Pete Werner, who told a 911 dispatcher he was a roommate of Garrett's. No further details were included in the report. - Columbus Dispatch
