  10/31/21 - Collin WilderrSr/2022, Wisconsin, 5-10, 195 (DS#60 SS) + More +

Wisconsin safety Collin Wilder was planning his Halloween costume this week when he bought a red and white hat for $7 at a mall and wrote a message on it with a Sharpie. Just like that, he came up with the object that best symbolizes how the Badgers have turned their season around. Wisconsin forced three turnovers and produced six sacks in a 27-7 victory over No. 9 Iowa on Saturday that enabled the Badgers to maintain control of their destiny in the Big Ten West Division race. Each time a Wisconsin player made a big play on defense, he wore Wilder's hat with the homemade slogan, "The Grit Factory." Consider it a more blue-collar, Midwestern version of Miami's turnover chain. "That's the mentality of this whole program, is grit," said Wilder, who intended to dress up as a factory worker or mechanic for Halloween. "I feel like that's what this program was built on. When you talk about the grit factory, this is the factory of grit - the University of Wisconsin." That mentality has helped Wisconsin (5-3, 3-2 Big Ten) win four straight after losing three of its first four games. "A lot of people counted us out," said Wisconsin quarterback Graham Mertz, who scored on two quarterback sneaks and threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Jake Ferguson. "Everybody in that locker room, that never even crossed our mind." Wisconsin's Braelon Allen rushed for 104 yards on 20 attempts. The 17-year-old freshman has run for over 100 yards in four straight games after totaling just 12 carries in Wisconsin's first four games. - Wisconsin/AP College Football

Graham Mertz scored on two quarterback sneaks and threw a touchdown pass to help Wisconsin trounce No. 9 Iowa 27-7 on Saturday for its fourth consecutive victory. Wisconsin (5-3, 3-2 Big Ten) forced three turnovers, produced six sacks and limited Iowa to 24 yards rushing on 30 carries. The Badgers maintained control of their destiny in the Big Ten West Division race and regained possession of the Heartland Trophy that goes to the winner of this annual matchup. "I thought our defense was tremendous in so many ways," Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst said. Wisconsin 's student section poured onto the field as the Badgers' players brought out the trophy.

Iowa (6-2, 3-2) has been outscored 51-14 in its last two games after being ranked second in the nation just a couple of weeks ago. This was the Hawkeyes' first game since a 24-7 home loss to Purdue on Oct. 16. Iowa's net yardage total didn't get into positive territory for good until midway through the second quarter when the Hawkeyes already trailed 17-0. Iowa didn't pick up a first down until just 1:15 remained in the second quarter. "You see (Jack) Sanborn and (Leo) Chenal," Iowa quarterback Spencer Petras said. "Those guys are probably two of the most physical linebackers in the conference, if not the most. They have a good d-line, too." Wisconsin's Braelon Allen rushed for 104 yards on 20 attempts The 17-year-old freshman has run for over 100 yards in four straight games after totaling just 12 carries in Wisconsin's first four games. - Wisconsin/AP College Football

  10/24/21 - Braelon AllenJr/2024, Wisconsin, 6-1, 235 (DS#7 RB) + More +

Wisconsin freshman running back Braelon Allen figures the Badgers got back to their their strengths. Graham Mertz completed just 5 of 8 passes for 52 yards. But it didn't matter with the Badgers running for 290 yards on 51 carries. "That's Wisconsin football, that's what we're known for, imposing our will on defenses," Allen said. "We are finally getting back to our brand of football. It's worked for the longest time." Chez Mellusi ran for 149 yards and a touchdown and Allen had 140 yards and two scores to help Wisconsin beat No. 25 Purdue 30-13 on Saturday. Mellusi and Allen both had career highs for yards, with Mellusi carrying 27 carries and Allen 12 for the Badgers (4-3, 2-2 Big Ten).

Wisconsin has won 15 straight against Purdue (4-3, 2-2 Big Ten). Allen fumbled in the first quarter but was able to gather himself. "Everyone was coming up to me and telling me to keep my head up," Allen said. "I knew I had to bounce back, forget about it and hold on to the football." Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst said it was a matter of doing whatever would move the football. "We weren't great on third down and we got to be better there, but the running game was going and the way our defense was playing, if we can continue to do that, I thought that might be best," Chryst said. The Boilermakers took a 13-10 lead on defensive end George Karlaftis' 56-yard fumble return with 6:13 left in the second second quarter. John Torchio intercepted Aidan O'Connell's pass and returned it 37 yards to the 1. However, Mellusi was stopped for no gain and quarterback Kendric Pryor had a 3-yard loss on third down. Collin Larsh made a 23-yard field goal to tie it at 13. The Badgers took the lead for good at 20-13 on Mellusi's 20-yard run. Allen's 70-yard run set up the touchdown, putting the ball on the 24. - Wisconsin/AP College Football

  10/21/21 - Tanner MordecairSr/2024, Wisconsin, 6-2, 210 (DS#28 QB) + More +

SMU coach Sonny Dykes saw the best first half of the season from his team, which made it easier to excuse a drop-off after halftime. Tanner Mordecai threw three touchdown passes to push his nation-leading total to 29, ran for another score and No. 21 SMU dominated the opening half in a 55-26 victory over Tulane on Thursday night. The Mustangs (7-0, 3-0 American Athletic) are a victory away from their second 8-0 start in the past three seasons as they get ready to play three of the next four games on the road in a stretch that ends with a trip to No. 2 Cincinnati. "You've got to go play well when you have the national stage," Dykes said. "We don't get it very often. I thought our guys were excited about the opportunity and took advantage of it certainly in the first half. Second half wasn't as good." Mordecai had 300 of his career-high 427 yards at halftime, capped by a 22-yard toss to Reggie Roberson Jr. for a 31-7 lead 53 seconds before the break.

The Oklahoma transfer's 3-yard scoring run on a bootleg off a fake pitch fooled the entire Tulane defense early. "Overall just poor execution on the defensive side of the ball," Tulane linebacker Nick Anderson said. "Many times we had them third-and-long and just didn't execute the right calls to get off the field." Second-year freshman Michael Pratt tied a career high with three touchdown passes to give him at least one in all 17 of his games, but the early deficit was too big in a fifth consecutive loss for the Green Wave (1-6, 0-3), which was displayed by Hurricane Ida early in the season. - SMU/AP College Football

The one big weakness of Wisconsin's otherwise outstanding defense this season has been its inability to force turnovers. But the Badgers finally produced a takeaway at a critical moment Saturday late in the fourth quarter and outlasted a pesky Army team 20-14. Army (4-2) trailed 13-7 and had the ball when Leo Chenal delivered a punishing hit that knocked the ball loose from quarterback Jabari Laws. Wisconsin's Keeanu Benton recovered the fumble at Army's 1-yard line with 2:55 remaining. On the next play, Graham Mertz scored on a quarterback keeper for his second touchdown run of the night. "It was definitely the game-changing moment we needed," Benton said. Wisconsin (3-3) entered the weekend having allowed the second-fewest yards per game of any Football Bowl Subdivision program, but the Badgers were among the nation's worst teams at forcing turnovers. Laws' fumble was just Wisconsin's fourth takeaway of the season. "We always want to be going for that ball," said Chenal, who also had a career-high 17 tackles. "We need to be creating more turnovers than we are right now." Army cut the lead to 20-14 on A.J. Howard's 6-yard touchdown run with 38 seconds left, but Jack Sanborn recovered the ensuing onside kick to seal the victory. - Wisconsin/AP College Football

  10/10/21 - Tanner MordecairSr/2024, Wisconsin, 6-2, 210 (DS#28 QB) + More +

Tanner Mordecai threw for 324 yards and two touchdowns, and No. 24 SMU rallied from a 14-point second-quarter deficit to beat Navy 31-24 on Saturday. Bryan Massey scored on a 95-yard kickoff return to begin the comeback for the unbeaten Mustangs. SMU (6-0, 2-0 American Athletic Conference) had the game tied by halftime and went up 31-24 on a 22-yard TD pass from Mordecai to Jordan Kerley with 8:19 remaining in the final quarter. Mordecai now has 26 touchdown passes on the season. He also threw a 66-yarder to Reggie Roberson on fourth-and-1 to open the scoring, but Navy (1-4, 1-2) answered with the next 21 points.

Chance Warren tied the game with a 23-yard scoring run, then Tai Lavatai threw the first touchdown pass of the season for the Midshipmen, 37 yards to Kai Puailoa-Rojas on a flea-flicker. Then a couple big turnovers went Navy's way. Mordecai was intercepted in the end zone, and later in the second quarter, he fumbled - and Diego Fagot returned that turnover 20 yards for a touchdown and a 21-7 lead. Navy never had a chance to get comfortable, though. Massey took the ensuing kickoff all the way back for a touchdown, and then Tre Siggers scored on a 2-yard run to tie it with 1:54 left in the half. After Kerley's catch in the end zone put the Mustangs ahead, Navy turned the ball over on downs twice, the second time inside its own 20. - SMU/AP College Football

Chez Mellusi ran for 145 yards and a touchdown and Wisconsin beat Illinois 24-0 on Saturday. Braelon Allen rushed for 131 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries and John Chenal carried nine times for 38 yards and a touchdown for the Badgers. Wisconsin quarterback Graham Mertz was 10-of-19 passing for 100 yards with an interception. The Badgers (2-3, 1-2 Big Ten Conference) outgained Illinois 491-93 yards in total offense. Coming into the game, Wisconsin ranked third in the nation and led the Big Ten in total defense, allowing just 249 yards per game and allowing just 4.3 yards per play. Illinois (2-5, 1-3) had been showing progress in its running game. Something had to give. On Saturday, it was the Illinois running game. Chase Brown led all Illinois rushers with 35 yards on eight carries. Brown rushed for 257 yards against Charlotte last week and tied his career high with two rushing touchdowns. - Wisconsin/AP College Football

SMU's Tanner Mordecai is throwing touchdown passes at the fastest rate in the Football Bowl Subdivision since 2012. The Oklahoma transfer has passed for at least four in each of the Mustangs' games, and his total of 24 is the most through five games since West Virginia's Geno Smith had the same number at this point nine years ago. Mordecai is the fourth FBS quarterback since 2000 to have 24 TD passes at this point in a season. The junior opened the season with seven TD passes against lower-tier Abilene Christian, then had four against North Texas, five against Louisiana Tech and four each against TCU and South Florida. Mordecai was a four-star recruit coming out of high school in Waco, Texas. He appeared in a total of 12 games for Oklahoma, backing up Jalen Hurts in 2019 and Spencer Rattler last year. He transferred to 24th-ranked SMU after 2020 starter Shane Buechele declared for the NFL draft, and he won the starter's job in August. - AP College Football

Tanner Mordecai threw two of his four touchdown passes in the first quarter as undefeated Southern Methodist jumped to a 16-0 lead in the first half and rolled to a 41-17 in over South Florida in the American Athletic Association opener for both schools Saturday afternoon. Mordecai fired a 21-yard pass to Reggie Roberson, Jr. four minutes into the game to put the Mustangs on top and they pushed the lead to 17-3 by intermission. The Bulls got within a touchdown, 17-10, after Jared Mangham scored the first of his two third-quarter touchdowns on a one-yard plunge. Mordecai completed 28 of 41 passes for 287 yards and hit Danny Gray for two of his four touchdown passes. Gray finished with seven catches for 74 yards. Tre Siggers carried 19 times for 79 yards and a touchdown for the Mustangs (5-0, 1-0). Timmy McClain was 14 of 22 for 223 yards to lead South Florida (1-4, 0-1). - Southern Methodist/AP College Football
