The reigning Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Year returns to Western Michigan this season, and if the college football analysts are correct, Treshaun Hayward's senior campaign should be another special one. Phil Steele selected the 6-foot-1, 225-pound linebacker as a Fourth Team All-American heading into 2020, marking Hayward's third preseason accolade, after the Ypsilanti native and Ann Arbor Skyline graduate earned first team honors on all-conferences lists from Steele and Athlon Sports.   For the second time this offseason, the Western Michigan football team bolstered its defensive backfield with a former Pittsburgh Panther. Graduate transfer Bricen Garner announced Tuesday his intention to join the Broncos for the 2020 football season, reuniting him with former Panther teammate Therran Coleman, a cornerback who signed with WMU as a grad transfer in January. "I'm thankful for the opportunity to have played, studied and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh," Garner wrote in a Twitter post. "The city will forever hold a special place in my heart. With that being said, I will play my last year of college eligibility at Western Michigan University."

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Pittsburgh native will have immediate eligibility in Kalamazoo, after redshirting his freshman year with the Panthers and seeing action in each of the past three seasons. Garner started six games at free safety as a redshirt freshman in 2017, tallying 30 tackles, two pass break-ups and an interception in the end zone that sealed Pitt's 28-21 overtime win over Youngstown State. He also collected a career-best six tackles in a 33-14 loss to No. 4 Penn State that year. - Kalamazoo Gazette

2019 WUERFFEL TROPHY WINNER: Western Michigan senior quarterback Jon Wassink has been named the recipient of the Wuerffel Trophy, presented by the Chick-fil-A Foundation, according to an announcement by the organization Tuesday. The Wuerffel Trophy, known as college football's premier award for community service, is presented annually to the Football Bowl Subdivision player who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel from the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy has honored over 1,200 nominees since its inception in 2005.
