  08/29/22 - Will RogersrSr/2025, Washington, 6-2, 207 (DS#17 QB) + More +

2022 PRESEASON MANNING AWARD PRESEASON WATCH LIST: Will Rogers, Jr., Mississippi State,...Rogers finished the 2021 regular season with a streak of 10 straight 300-plus yard passing games. His 4,739 passing yards were the third-most in SEC single-season history, while he ranked second in the SEC and seventh in the nation in passing touchdowns (36). Rogers enters his junior campaign as MSU's all-time leader in career completion percentage. - Mississippi State Football

  08/24/22 - Michael Penix Jr.rSr/2024, Washington, 6-2, 216 (DS#5 QB) + More +

Washington is going with Michael Penix Jr. as its starting quarterback for the season opener against Kent State, coach Kalen DeBoer said Tuesday. Penix, a transfer from Indiana, had been considered the leader for most of the offseason in the competition with Dylan Morris and Sam Huard. "He's just had a really great camp and he's been consistent from the time spring ball started to where he's at now," DeBoer said. "He's done a great job earning it." Penix, who is a junior in eligibility, had an injury-filled career at Indiana before deciding to transfer after last season.

Penix knows DeBoer's system the best after having played for him in 2019 with the Hoosiers. As a freshman, Penix threw for 10 touchdowns in just six games before injuries took over. Penix has never played more than six games in a season. "I just wanted to be somewhere where I felt like I'd be comfortable and be able to become a better person and become a better player, and I felt like this was definitely a spot," Penix said. "Being under coach DeBoer once already I know some of the things that he brought to the table and the way he wants things to run and I wanted to be a part of that." - AP College Football

  08/21/22 - Jordan PerrymanrSr/2023, Washington, 6-0, 198 (DS#57 CB) + More +

When FCS All-American and UC Davis corner Jordan Perryman announced a graduate transfer to UW this offseason, it was largely assumed that the physical defensive back would seize a spot vacated by Trent McDuffie and Kyler Gordon. Through the spring and summer, he has done that and more. Last week, in fact, co-defensive coordinator Chuck Morrell said "Jordan Perryman is playing as good as anyone on our squad right now, and it's impressive watching him play day in and day out." He won the bulk of battles against equally physical wide receiver Rome Odunze in the six practices open to the media this month. And while there was always an expectation that Perryman could play, he's looking like a legitimate all-conference candidate. - Seattle Times

  08/21/22 - Will RogersrSr/2025, Washington, 6-2, 207 (DS#17 QB) + More +

Mississippi State quarterback Will Rogers went 9 for 18 in Saturday's scrimmage at Davis Wade Stadium, tossing two touchdown passes and one interception. That final statistic matters to Rogers most as the Bulldogs progress through preseason camp. "I don't really want to turn the ball over, and I don't want sacks," Rogers said Tuesday. "I could probably go 0 for 20, and if we don't have a turnover or a sack, we'll have a good day." Of course, an 0-for-20 showing come the regular season won't fly, and Rogers knows it.

The junior signal-caller is stressing consistency - for himself as well as his teammates - before MSU's season opens at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 3 against Memphis. "As an offensive unit, we have to become more consistent, so we all have to take the next step," Rogers said. That starts with the man under center - or, more often, taking shotgun snaps in Mike Leach's Air Raid offense. Rogers put together an impressive junior season, executing Leach's scheme with few mistakes. He threw for 4,739 yards and 36 touchdowns against just nine interceptions in 2021, taking the Bulldogs' starting job and running with it as a sophomore. But there were bad games mixed in. Rogers threw for only 300 yards despite 55 attempts Oct. 16 against Alabama, getting sacked seven times and tossing three picks and no touchdown passes. - The Dispatch

  08/15/22 - Jaxson KirklandrSr/2023, Washington, 6-7, 328 (DS#12 OT) + More +

UW sixth-year senior left tackle Jaxson Kirkland will miss the season opener against Kent State on Sept. 3 as a condition of his NCAA reinstatement, head coach Kalen DeBoer announced Saturday. The 6-foot-7, 340-pound tackle initially declared for the 2022 NFL draft and hired an agent, before learning he needed ankle surgery and withdrawing from the draft. The NCAA cleared Kirkland to return for his sixth and final season of eligibility on May 4 … though the Kent State condition was not made public until Saturday. "I don't want to use the word suspension, because he didn't do anything wrong," DeBoer said. An appeal of that decision - not suspension! - was unsuccessful.

"Jaxson's been so positive throughout this whole process that he's just happy that he gets a chance to come back and play," DeBoer said. "Glass half-full or empty, he's choosing to be in the mindset of having the glass half-full. He's excited that he gets this season to be able to end his UW career the right way." The son of former UW offensive lineman and captain Dean Kirkland, Jaxson was named a first-team All-Pac-12 performer at left tackle in both 2020 and 2021. He has started 39 games across the last four seasons. The former Jesuit High School standout signed with Washington as a three-star recruit in 2017 over offers from UCLA, Cal, Oregon, Hawaii, Iowa State, Oregon State, San Diego State, Texas Tech and Washington State. - Seattle Times

  08/15/22 - Michael Penix Jr.rSr/2024, Washington, 6-2, 216 (DS#5 QB) + More +

One guy has been here. Has won here. Maybe not as consistently as the fan base would have liked him to, but enough that he is a legitimate threat to start in the Huskies' opener. Another guy is the one whose left arm is thought to have been kissed by the football gods - the five-star recruit who throws a divine deep ball and is dripping with natural talent. And then there is Michael Penix Jr. - the transfer from Indiana with little luster on his résumé. He has never played more than six games in any of his four college seasons. He completed fewer than half his passes in all three of the Hoosiers' losses last year, in which he played all of five games.

But as Washington's first football game draws nearer, it is Penix who has been just consistent enough in practice, just knowledgeable enough in this system - that it should come as no surprise if he is the Huskies' starting quarterback when they open against Kent State on Sept. 3. "He's got a real strong, powerful arm," Huskies receiver Ja'Lynn Polk said of Penix. "I think a lot of people will see that real soon." This wasn't Polk predicting who will be behind center when UW's season begins. He was complimentary of fellow Husky quarterbacks Dylan Morris and Sam Huard, against whom Penix is competing. But it was clear that Polk, like others in the program, have been impressed with what they have seen from the fifth-year junior thus far. No, you won't see Penix's name on any NFL mock draft sites. He doesn't make scouts salivate or fans fawn out of pure wonder. However, there is enough of a track record to suggest that not only could Penix win this quarterback battle, but that he could provide enough production to lead UW to a successful season. - Seattle Times

2022 PRESEASON WUERFFEL TROPHY (COMMUNITY SERVICE) WATCHLIST: Alex Cook, Washington, Sr., DB,...Cook, a sixth-year senior from Sacramento, has been a starter in the Husky secondary for most off the last two seasons, starting nine games last season and three out of four in 2020. He originally came to the UW as a wide receiver, but moved to defensive back, prior to the 2019 season. Last year, he notched 46 tackles, third among returning players. - Washington Football

2022 PRESEASON ROTARY LOMBARDI AWARD WATCHLIST: Jaxson Kirkland, Washington, Sr OT,...Kirkland, an offensive tackle from Portland, Ore., will return for his sixth season on the Husky roster in 2022, having started nearly every game of the last four seasons after redshirting in 2017. He earned first-team All-Pac-12 in both 2020 and 2021 and was also named to the preseason watch list for the Outland Trophy in both 2021 and again this summer. The son of former Husky offensive lineman Dean Kirkland, Jaxson has started 39 out of a possible 43 games over the last four years and is a two-time winner of the program's John P.   08/12/22 - Jaxson KirklandrSr/2023, Washington, 6-7, 328 (DS#12 OT) + More +

Sixth-year senior left tackle Jaxson Kirkland has been in and out of the lineup in preseason camp, leaving practice early on Saturday and sitting out most scrimmage sessions on Sunday and Tuesday. The 6-7, 340-pounder and two-time first-team All-Pac-12 performer did not participate on Wednesday but watched the second half of practice from the sidelines, without nursing any obvious injury. Following Wednesday's practice, offensive line coach Scott Huff didn't sound overly concerned. "He's been doing good," Huff said. "He's doing good. We're being smart with him, bringing him back slowly but steady. But yeah, he's doing good. I'm happy with where he's at. We're just being smart. "We've got a couple of those guys we've got to be smart with, like (sixth-year right guard Henry) Bainivalu. He's played a lot of football for us. Jaxson's in that same boat. So we've just got to be smart. We've got to get him to the game, get your racehorses to the race. So we're being smart. I'm really happy with where he's at right now." In Kirkland's absence, sophomore Troy Fautanu (6-4, 312) slid from left guard to left tackle and sophomore Nate Kalepo (6-6, 316) was inserted as the starting left guard - alongside center Corey Luciano, right guard Henry Bainivalu and right tackle Roger Rosengarten. - Seattle Times

  08/12/22 - Ulumoo AlerSr/2024, Washington, 6-5, 327 (DS#62 DT) + More +

UW may have sustained its first significant injury of the 2022 season Wednesday, when junior defensive lineman Ulumoo Ale crumpled to the turf during a run play in a scrimmage session. The 6-foot-6, 333-pound converted offensive lineman - who worked primarily with the starters during the first six practices of preseason camp - was carted out of the Dempsey Indoor Center after having an air cast placed around his left leg. Husky head coach Kalen DeBoer was not available to comment on Ale's injury following Wednesday's practice.

A fifth-year junior from Tacoma, Ale swapped sides of the line this winter after previously starting 10 games across the last two seasons at left guard. He dropped 22 pounds this offseason and was expected to make an immediate impact on UW's underperforming run defense, which ranked 10th in the Pac-12 in opponent yards per carry (4.76) and 11th in rushing yards allowed per game (194) last fall. "You want that guy as your teammate, I'll tell you that much," redshirt freshman defensive lineman Kuao Peihopa said Tuesday, one day prior to Ale's injury. "The dude's a massive frickin' two-time Golden Gloves boxer (as a child in Australia). You want him next to you. The way he prepares and the way he attacks every day...I'll say for myself, it's a blessing to have that guy as a teammate. Because he teaches me so much. "And shoot, if we didn't have (Ale), I feel like our whole d-line wouldn't be the same. He added a real spark to our d-line for sure." - Seattle Times

  08/11/22 - Aaron DumasJr/2025, Washington, 5-10, 208 (DS#999 RB) + More +

While running backs Wayne Taulapapa, Will Nixon, Cameron Davis and Sam Adams II continue to take the majority of scrimmage snaps, New Mexico transfer Aaron Dumas earned his first action (with the second team) Tuesday. The coaching staff has repeatedly emphasized that the goal is to get players who didn't participate in the spring as many reps as possible early in camp … but it's still hard to dismiss Taulapapa, Nixon and Davis' extended roles. UW coach Kalen DeBoer recently said that it's possible to utilize three running backs consistently … but a two-man rotation is more likely. Will Dumas or Richard Newton (who continues to be limited while working back from an ACL injury) become regular contributors? Time will tell. - Seattle Times

  08/11/22 - Rome OdunzerJr/2024, Washington, 6-3, 212 (DS#3 WR) + More +

In UW's fifth practice of preseason camp, WR Rome Odunze, 6-3, 201, was unsurprisingly active - piling up chunk plays on passes from multiple quarterbacks. The highlight was a 27-yard touchdown that capped a 58-yard drive in a two-minute drill, in which junior quarterback Michael Penix Jr. dropped a floating deep ball to Odunze - who had slipped past redshirt freshman cornerback Davon Banks. The sophomore wide receiver from Las Vegas also contorted along the left sideline to haul in a pass from quarterback Sam Huard for a 30-yard gain, despite the tight coverage of corner Mishael Powell. - Seattle Times

  08/11/22 - Alex CookrSr/2023, Washington, 6-0, 195 (DS#20 SS) + More +

Alex Cook and Asa Turner are about to be bonded by more than a position, a program...or a cosmic coincidence. Cook - a sixth-year safety from Sacramento - is expecting his first child with his girlfriend, Eunique Washington, on Dec. 13. When they found out this summer that they'd be having a boy, Washington immediately had a name in mind. It had little to do with Cook's fellow safety starter. "I didn't come up with the name 'Asa.' My girlfriend did," Cook clarified last week. "It's funny, because my girlfriend has never met (UW safety Asa Turner). She just had that name in her head once we found out it was a boy. "But before we even knew if it was a boy or decided on the name, I knew I wanted Asa to be the godfather." - Seattle Times

2022 PRESEASON CHUCK BEDNARIK AWARD WATCH LIST: Zion Tupuola-Fetui, Washington, Junior DE,...Tupuola-Fetui, a junior from Pearl City, Hawai'i, was earlier this year named to Walter Camp's preseason All-America first team. The edge outside linebacker was a first-team All-Pac-12 and second-team All-America selection after the shortened 2020 season, when he led the nation in sacks per game. In 2021, he played in the last five games of the season after returning from an offseason injury. - Washington Football

  08/02/22 - Jaxson KirklandrSr/2023, Washington, 6-7, 328 (DS#12 OT) + More +

Washington left tackle Jaxson Kirkland (6-7, 340), whose play last season was hampered by an ankle injury, is making a surprise return to the Huskies team this year after undergoing successful surgery. The surprise is that he was able to have his eligibility reinstate after hiring an agent when he intended to enter the 2022 NFL draft. His play last year, and his rating in the draft, were not good because, as he learned after the surgery, his ankle was more than 60 percent compromised. To compensate, he kept his weight down to as low as 295 pounds, which also didn't help his draft ratings. He petitioned for reinstatement at UW and began working out and adding good weight, up to 340 pounds. In May, he was declared eligible for a sixth season. So he heads into the 2022 season with a sound ankle, about 40 more pounds of muscle and in great shape because he was able to work out hard. - Seattle Times
